Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The setting for the movie was in what city?

Answer: Philadelphia

The setting for the show was in Philadelphia, at a TV station, where "The Perry Parker Show" aired. This show was similar to "American Bandstand" with popular music and dancing. This is mentioned in the beginning of the movie by Perry, saying that "Dick Clark was once in Philly too", while talking to the kids on the show.
2. In the beginning, which of these couples were the regular "Spotlight" dancers on the show?

Answer: Vicky and Dugan

This was shown very early in the film. The other dancers on the show were always talking about Vicky and Dugan. Vicky was the gorgeous blond, and Dugan was the James Dean type, complete with leather jacket and cow-lick. They were also a couple outside of the show, much to the chagrin of Vicky's father, who didn't like Dugan.
3. Who was Del's next door neighbor and friend?

Answer: Gail

Gail was the academic girl, always trying to get Del to study. She was also his best friend. There were a few scenes early in the movie with Gail and Del studying for their SAT (college entrance exams).
4. Why did Del end up as Vicky's dance partner on the show?

Answer: The cops got Dugan.

Actually it was stated that Dugan was picked up by the cops many times, and after the latest episode, he was "barred for life" from the show. This was stated after Del snuck into the show, and the producer couldn't find Dugan. When he asked for volunteers to dance with Vicky, no one volunteered, for fear of retribution from Dugan, except for Del who raised his hand. That was how he became her dance partner.
5. How did Del get on the show originally?

Answer: He snuck in the backdoor

Del showed up at the backdoor of the studio to try and get in by being picked by Perry. When the bouncers were involved with an altercation with a group of people trying to get in, Del was able to slip in through the door before they could stop him. When the opportunity came, he didn't think twice.
6. Vicky's dad was a policeman in the film. What was his nickname?

Answer: Tiny

Vicky's dad was a BIG man, and went by the nickname of "Tiny" to all who knew him. Even his deputies called him by that nickname. He was the police chief, of the small suburban town they lived in. He was a very imposing guy. He did seem like a pussycat around Vicky though. We met him several times during the movie, when Del showed up at Vicky's house.
7. Where did Del and Vicky go on their first date?

Answer: A train station

The group from the TV show met every Saturday night at a railway station, which was closed on weekends. Del picked Vicky up at home, met her parents and headed for the station. One of the best song and dance scenes in the film was shot here. The date itself was encouraged by Perry Parker, who was trying to get some chemistry between the two of them, in order to help save his failing TV show.
8. Why did Vicky need Del's help?

Answer: She needed him to help her get out of the house.

Vicky's heart was still with Dugan, who wanted to run off to Hollywood. She asked Del to get her out of the house, since her father liked Del and allowed her to date him. She would then meet up with Dugan and after their date, Del would bring her home, as if he had been with her all along.
9. Del and Vicky made a personal appearance, representing the show on the beach at Wildwood. How were they dressed?

Answer: Tux and Wedding Gown

Perry had them dress in the tux and wedding gown to give the appearance of "Young Lovers", during their appearance at the beach. The personal appearance was scheduled as a promotion for the TV show, and Perry played music at the beach, while trying to sell his most recent record album.

In the 1960s many radio stations and TV shows produced this type of record, where they compiled popular songs, and released them under the name of the station or show, as a "Greatest Hits" type album.
10. Del showed his heart during the dance scene at the beach by doing what?

Answer: He chose a handicapped girl as a partner.

The scene involved something they called a "Multiplication Dance" where Del and Vicky danced with the people in the crowd, and would switch off and get multiple dance partners who were waiting in line. Del spotted a girl in the front of the crowd wearing leg braces, so he left the line, and went over and asked her to dance.

She refused at first, but Del got her to dance the rest of the song with him, as everyone else looked on. It was a very touching scene.
11. When did Del and Dugan meet for the first time?

Answer: Dugan broke into Del's house

After Del dropped Vicky off from one of their "dates", he drove home in the middle of a rainstorm. Whe he got home, the lights were all out, and no one was home. When he finally got the lights on, there was Dugan, who had let himself in to the house. In this scene they discussed future plans, and Dugan told Del how he wanted to go off to Hollywood.

The scene ended with a dance-off sequence between the two of them.
12. In the end Vicky chose Del.

Answer: False

Vicky decided to quit school and run off with Dugan to Hollywood. She told Del this one night after one of their "dates". She told Del that she really liked him, but she wanted to go to Hollywood with Dugan. She wanted to become the next Natalie Wood.
13. Del agreed to help them run away.

Answer: True

They devised a plan where Del would help Vicky get out of the house, and meet up with Del at the train station, and they would leave from there on Dugan's motorcycle. They carried out their plan one evening, and Del did help them, even to the point of crashing the car he borrowed from Gail's parents into Tiny's police cruiser, to aid the couple in getting away.
14. What was the ultimate outcome of the "Perry Parker Show"?

Answer: The show was cancelled.

Unfortunately for Perry and the kids, the show was cancelled, and replaced by "Psychedelic Shack". When Perry found out the show was cancelled, and he was done, he lost it on the air, and went into a wild dance number with the entire cast and audience. This prompted the producer to pull the plug on the show while it was still on the air.
15. The end of the film brought us back to Del's next door neighbor, Gail, who represented the academic, conformist teens of the time. She came to visit him and wanted him to hear some new music she had gotten a hold of. What was it?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Gail came into Dels' room in a radical departure from what her appearance was earlier in the film. She had her hair differently, was wearing a shorter skirts, fringes, and Indian mocassins, perhaps signalling a change in the culture that was coming. She also brought a record which she wanted Del to hear, which she said was "not bad".

The redcord was "Like A Rolling Stone" from Dylan's "Highway 61" album.
