In Search of the Castaways Trivia Quiz

As a fan of fairly obscure Disney movies, "In Search of the Castaways" was one of my favorites as a child. Based on a novel by Jules Verne, the story follows siblings, Mary and Robert Grant, as they search for their father who was lost at sea.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie opens with siblings, Mary and Robert Grant, and their companion, Professor Jacques Paganel, attempting to board a ship in order to convince its captain, Lord Glenarvan, to assist them in searching for their father who was lost at sea. What evidence is a catalyst clue that suggests Captain Grant is still alive?

Answer: note in a bottle

Mary Grant is played by the original Disney princess, Hayley Mills. The Professor, played by Maurice Chevalier, is the catalyst for the expedition after recovering the note in the bottle from the stomach of a Mako shark.
2. Mary and Robert Grant manage to board Lord Glenarvan's vessel in an unique way at the suggestion of the Professor. The ship is actively abuzz with crew and guests, coming and going, as a party is in progress. How do they manage to board?

Answer: walking up the gangplank backwards

The Professor's theory is that the guards will be confused with all the people exiting the ship and not question if Mary and Robert are coming or going. It works, and the siblings hide in the dining room under the party table.
3. The siblings hide under the table but are eventually discovered by a lady who thinks there are rats on board. After this, Mary and Robert are able to speak with Lord Glenarvan about their suspicions. With the help of Lord Glenarvan's son, John, they are eventually able to convince him to start the search. The Professor reappears and presents his theory on Captain Grant's location. On which continent do they begin the search?

Answer: South America

If I recall, they specifically head to the Andes mountains where the Professor is sure Captain Grant is being held by Indians.
4. Arriving near their desired location, the searchers ride high into the mountains on horseback with the help of some local guides. At the top of the mountain, the guides unload supplies and prepare to leave. Lord Glenarvan demands that they stay, but his request is rejected because the guides fear something, motioning with their hands. What do they fear?

Answer: earthquakes

Unable to speak their language (although the Professor is completely sure he knows what they mean), the guides attempt to motion "shaking" from an earthquake. The Professor, in an attempt to keep Lord Glenarvan continued in the search, lies to him and tells him the guides mean "extreme cold."
5. After a long night, the searchers go for a slide and almost lose Robert Grant when he is "scooped up" from them by an amazing creature. Robert is certain to meet an untimely fate because what has taken him for food?

Answer: condor

Robert is snatched from a snowy mountain by a condor who is intending to feed him to its young. Robert is saved by an Indian, Thalcave, who shoots the condor in a special way that makes it spiral slowly down to the ground.
6. Robert is eventually rescued, and the group ends up in a dry flood plain where they make camp. In the night, it storms and the floods come roaring down the valley. In order to escape, the searchers do what?

Answer: climb a giant tree

The searchers scramble into the branches of a massive tree, almost losing Lord Glenarvan who is the last to make it. Thalcave leaves to get help and the searchers spend days in their tree, fishing, eating bird eggs, and caring for Lord Glenarvan who ends up with a cold.
7. An Indian, Thalcave, finally rescues the group and tells them that he has heard of a tribe that is holding several white men captive. Ecstatic, the searchers follow Thalcave and gladly pay the ransom only to find they released the wrong captives. The Professor calls himself "stupid" because he suddenly realizes that the animal that was caught in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean connected to the catalyst clue was a what?

Answer: Mako shark

The Professor says that Mako sharks are only found in the waters of the Indian Ocean. This isn't exactly true, but you might not notice this as a kid watching the movie. Mako sharks are commonly found in warmer waters, including the Indian Ocean, but they are also found in other warmer waters, such as within the Gulf of Mexico.

For the purpose of this story, the note in the bottle in the Mako shark's stomach made reference to "Indians". This leads the Professor to select New Zealand as the only other place in the Indian ocean it could be, as the Australian Indians are called Aborigines.
8. The searchers head to their next destination with the help of a seemingly helpful ex-crewman of Captain Grant's by the name of Thomas Ayerton. Mary Grant does not trust him, and her mistrust proves to be well-founded when Averton incites the crew to mutiny, taking Lord Glenarvan's ship for what purpose?

Answer: gun running

Averton leaves the searchers in a dingy on the open ocean and he makes off with Lord Glenarvan's ship. The Professor realizes that the natural ocean currents will take them eventually to New Zealand where Captain Grant may be alive. Unfortunately, the Indians on the island shores are hostile, capturing the searchers and imprisoning them in a hut with a half-crazed captive, Bill Gaye.
9. Captured by hostile Indians, the searchers are held with a crazy little man named Bill Gaye. Bill was a crewman aboard Captain Grant's ship and knows that the last he saw Captain Grant, he was still alive. He would be able to lead the searchers to Captain Grant, if only he could escape the Indian prison. They do manage to escape, by doing what?

Answer: swinging Robert by his ankles to safety

Robert is threaded through a small window and swung like a pendulum with a rope bound to his ankles until he is able to reach land. At the time, the Indians are busy performing ritual dances and do not notice until all the searchers have left the jail cell and climbed down a rope to the base of the cliff. The Indians try to follow, but Bill Gaye lights the rope on fire from the bottom.
10. Bill Gaye leads the searchers onward and they manage to find Lord Glenarvan's ship docked and nearly unguarded while Averton is ashore negotiating with the Indians. The searchers slip aboard Lord Glenarvan's ship, catching Averton by surprise. Captain Grant does turn out to be alive and the children are reunited with their father. In the last twist of the movie, you find out what happy character created the catalyst clue. Who was it?

Answer: Bill Gaye

The children were sure that the note in the bottle was written in their father's hand. However, Bill Gaye admits the reason that he went to sea was that he was a master forger and had put the note in the bottle that was eventually swallowed by a Mako shark, which was eventually found by a fisherman who gave it to the Professor.
