Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Princess Leia is taken prisoner by Darth Vader

The movie opens with the Rebel blockade runner 'Tantive IV' under attack by the massive Imperial Star Destroyer 'Devastator'. Despite putting up a fight, the ship's crew are no match for Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers and they manage to board the ship. Before she can be taken, however, the Rebels' leader, Princess Leia Organa, hides what we will later discover are the Death Star blueprints in one of her droids, R2-D2.

She then sends the droid, who is accompanied by a nervous protocol droid, C-3PO, on an escape pod to the surface of the nearby planet of Tatooine.
2. The droids are captured by Jawas

When the droids land on Tatooine, they are taken by Jawas, a small-statured race of scavengers, who neutralize the droids and take them to their transport, a sandcrawler. These droids are later sold at market to Luke Skywalker and Owen Lars, his uncle, and taken to Owen's moisture farm.
3. Luke finds a message in R2D2

Luke Skywalker, living on his uncle's moisture farm, takes care of the new droids. He is tasked with cleaning the two. When he tries to attend to R2-D2, Luke notices that the little droid seems to be hiding something and behaving unusually. Exceedingly curious, Luke triggers something and R2-D2 projects a holographic message. Princess Leia appears in the hologram, desperately pleading for help. "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope"!

The message intrigues Luke and he wonders whether Obi-Wan Kenobi and the nomadic hermit Ben Kenobi are one and the same.
4. Obi-Wan Kenobi saves Luke from the Tusken Raiders

After discovering the distress message from Princess Leia and setting out to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker encounters a group of Sand People while traveling through the Jundland Wastes on Tatooine. These are nomadic people who are aggressive and territorial. They attack Luke and he falls, unconscious, but they are then scared off when Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on the scene and saves Luke.

Obi-Wan ceases to be, at this point, an enigmatic character and more like a father figure to Luke. Obi-Wan is able to extract the rest of the message from R2-D2. Luke is torn between his duty to his family and his drive for adventure and does not know what to do. However, when he returns home, he sees that it's been ravaged by soldiers of the Empire and he realizes that there's nothing remaining for him on Tatooine.
5. Luke meets Han Solo in Mos Eisley

Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, arrive in the bustling spaceport of Mos Eisley on Tatooine, seeking a ship to take them off-planet to rescue the princess. The Mos Eisley Cantina, while having a rough reputation, seems to be the most likely place. Inside, they meet with Han Solo, a smuggler, and Chewbacca, his co-pilot and set about negotiating for passage off-world. After they agree on a price (17,000), Han has a run-in with another bounty hunter, Greedo, and shoots him dead.

Han, Chewie, Luke, Obi-Wan, and the two droids manage to make it off-world aboard the Millennium Falcon, Han's ship, despite almost being chased sown by Storm Troopers.
6. The Death Star shows its power against Alderaan

Aboard the Death Star, Darth Vader is trying to get information out of Princess Leia. However, she proves to be more stubborn than he accounted for, resisting even a mind probe. Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star, decides to test the strength of his battle station's main laser and to try and torture Leia some more. While in orbit around Leia's home of Alderaan, he threatens to destroy it if she does not tell them where the Rebel base is. She capitulates, telling that the Rebels are hiding on Dantooine. Nevertheless, Tarkin targets Alderaan with the full power of the Death Star's laser, destroying the entire planet and killing billions in the process.

Near-ish, Obi-Wan, aboard the Millennium Falcon, senses a great disturbance in the Force.
7. The Millennium Falcon is captured by the Death Star

Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewie and Obi-Wan Kenobi, all aboard the Millennium Falcon, arrive at Alderaan. However, where the planet should be, Han reports that there is now an asteroid field that wasn't there before. However, they do notice a massive structure, unbeknownst to them, that it is the Death Star, and move closer to investigate. This proves to be a mistake as they are then captured by the Death Star's powerful tractor beam which pulls them in.

By guile or perhaps by luck, Han is a smuggler so he has hidden cargo holds in his ship; this is where the crew all hides and manage to avoid detection from the Storm Troopers that board to inspect the ship.
8. Luke is nearly killed in a trash compactor

Sneaking aboard the Death Star, Luke manages to convince Han Solo that it would be a good idea to rescue Princess Leia for a reward. They take Chewie and manage to get themselves some Storm Trooper uniforms and start their search. R2-D2 is able to use an uplink to find the cell where she is being kept. Obi-Wan, on the other hand, goes to disable the tractor beam.

Managing to bluff and shoot their way out of any mess, the three make contact with Leia and get her out of her cell. Unfortunately, the Storm Troopers just keep coming so the four of them have to improvise an exit route. They shoot through a cover and jump to relative safety... in a trash compactor. Trying to get out, the four contact the droids to get them out, however, the droids are having trouble themselves, so the help is delayed. In this time, the trash compactor walls start to close in and nothing they do is able to slow the walls enough.

Getting back to a computer station, R2-D2 is able to stop the trash compactor and open the door so that Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewie are all able to get out into the corridors and, eventually, back to the millennium Falcon.
9. Obi-Wan is defeated in a duel against Darth Vader

Obi-Wan, at the same time, went on his own to shut down the tractor beam in order to enable Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and the droids to escape. Using stealth as his weapon and the Force to guide him, he is able to reach the controls and the power them down. However, Darth Vader, being very strong in the Force, had already detected Obi-Wan and met him on one of the platforms.

To buy some time, Obi-Wan engaged in a duel with his former Padawan and the battle is fierce. Luke, having freed the princess and ready to escape, managed to see the end of the duel. With a glance behind him at Luke, Obi-Wan sacrifices himself and is killed by Vader, though his body disappears. Luke escapes with his friends aboard the Millennium Falcon to safety.
10. Luke and Han meet with the Rebel fleet command

Leaving the Death Star, Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie and the droids have to fight their way out to safety. The Millennium Falcon is chased by TIE fighters so Han and Luke man the guns in order to shoot their way out. Despite their victory, Leia knows that this is just a ploy by the Empire to track them to the Rebel fleet. Nevertheless, they go.

Luke and the others meet with the Rebel fleet commanders and give them the plans for the Death Star. Upon review, they find that there is a weakness - a thermal port that connects with the power source. They realize that a direct hit with a proton torpedo would set off a chain reaction and destroy the Death Star from the inside.

Unfortunately, their planning is cut short due to the arrival of the Imperial Fleet, which had trailed the Millennium Falcon.
11. Luke uses the Force to guide his proton torpedo

The battle for the Death Star happens around the planet of Yavin-4. The Death Star is trying to move into position so that they can use their main weapon to destroy the planet. The Rebels, on the other hand, are trying to clear a path for their bombers to shoot a proton torpedo down the thermal port and destroy the Death Star.

Luke flies an X-Wing in this battle, and tries to hold off the Imperial fighters with his friends. However, Darth Vader gets in on the action and the Rebels start getting picked off, one by one. With just moments to go before the Death Star is in position, Luke makes one final run down the trench to try and shoot the proton torpedo accurately. With Vader on his tail, Han Solo arrives in the Millennium Falcon (he had not wanted to participate initially in the fight) and saves Luke.

Luke is then guided by the voice of Obi-Wan to use the Force. Luke turns off his computer and shoots two proton torpedoes accurately and the Death Star is destroyed!
12. Luke and Han are awarded medals

After the Battle of Yavin (from whence the dating system ABY is derived in the Star Wars universe), the rebels gather to celebrate their victory. Though this is not the end of the war, this marks the first time that the Rebels have managed to defeat the Empire in an open battle, and on a grand scale. Both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are awarded medals by Princess Leia in a triumphant ceremony, with many of the Rebel forces looking on with joy.
