Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It's So Easy" is on this playlist - the song that was first released in 1958. It was recorded by an early rock-and-roll band from west Texas (USA). The lead singer was one of the song's co-writers, too. What group initially made this song popular?

Answer: The Crickets

It was The Crickets, a band which had been formed by singer/songwriter, Buddy Holly, who released "It's So Easy". The song did not chart well during its early release. Buddy Holly's death in 1959 tragically shortened his career but many of his songs gained even more attention and admiration afterward.
His band, The Crickets, continued to perform after the Holly died. Although the band experienced a variety of line-ups and worked for several decades, wide-spread commercial popularity/success would elude them.
As for the song, "It's So Easy", it was a top five hit (on US Billboard Hot 100 chart) in September of 1977 for (then) "Queen of Rock", Linda Ronstadt.
2. "She's Just My Style" is an upbeat song with catchy lyrics that make it hard to be still when hearing it. The band who released the song was hired as Disneyland entertainment in the early 1960s - without using the lead singer's famous father's connections. Who were they?

Answer: Gary Lewis & the Playboys

Gary Lewis & the Playboys were fronted by Gary Lewis, the son of American comedian/actor, Jerry Lewis and his wife, singer, Patti Palmer. Gary Lewis was the drummer/lead singer and (initially) his mother was financial source for the band known as Gary & the Playboys.

The band procured work at Disneyland without using their connection to Jerry Lewis, who was very popular and very well connected in the early 1960s. It did not take long until "famous friends" noticed the band and bigger opportunities were made available. "She's Just My Style" was one of a string of hits for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. Among other songs that they released and charted well are: "This Diamond Ring", "Save Your Heart For Me" and "Everybody Loves a Clown".
3. Although the song "New York Groove" was not written by any of the members of the super-group, Kiss, it was featured on the first solo album from one of the group's members. It would be the highest charting song from that singer of any of his solo releases of the 1970s. Who?

Answer: Ace Frehley

"New York Groove" was written by English musician, Russ Ballard, and had been recorded by British glam rock band, Hello, earlier in the 1970s. Ace Frehley included the song on - as mentioned in the question - his first solo album. His album was titled, "Ace Frehley", included nine songs; the other eight songs were either written or co-written by him.
When Ace Frehley preformed with Kiss his persona was "The Spaceman" which was often stylized as "Space Ace"; he played lead guitar and sang lead on some of their vocals.
Ace Frehley was not a part of the band, Kiss, during their tour - billed as their final tour - that played into the 2020s.
4. The song "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was the first major hit single in the USA for its performing artist. It would certainly not be his last. Described as a "funk song sung exclusively in falsetto", it was written by the singer and included on his self-titled, second-released album. Who was the artist?

Answer: Prince

In late 1979 when Prince released the song, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" in advance of his second album, "Prince", that would be released earlier the next year. At that time his talent and adoration was yet to be realized across the world. Things would change.
Ever the innovative and intriguing musician, Prince sang the lead and backing vocals for "I Wanna Be Your Lover"; he also played a wide variety of instruments for its recording. Liner notes and other sources do not completely concur as to specific instruments heard on the song but most mention his mix of electric and acoustic guitars, drums, and synthesizers like the Polymoog and Minimoog among those.
He may have had a slow start but Prince would sell over 100 million records worldwide and be universally recognized among the greatest musical artists of all time.
5. During 1984, the movie "Footloose", its soundtrack and its song of the same name were very popular. The song was written and sung by an artist who had written several hit songs for other artists before "Footloose". Who was the singer who was also one half of a successful singing duo?

Answer: Kenny Loggins

Kenny Loggins had written songs that charted well for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Doobie Brothers and Anne Murray before he wrote and released "Footloose".
He and his singing partner, Jim Messina, were known as Loggins and Messina; together they had a few songs that charted well in the early 1970s.
Kenny Loggins' version of "Footloose" (from the movie soundtrack) reached the number one position as a single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart during the first quarter of the year in 1984. Kenny Loggins had co-written the song with Dean Pitchford and they received a nod from the Academy Awards when their song was nominated "Best Original Song" during the 1985 awards.
Fans of Kenny Loggins would be gratified with his contributions to several popular movie soundtracks. In addition to "Footloose" he had songs on the movie soundtracks of: "Caddyshack" (1980), "Top Gun" (1986) and "Over the Top" (1987).
6. The song "Bop" reached the number one spot on country charts in both the USA and Canada late in 1985. It was released by an artist who had been one half of a soft rock duo when they were active throughout the 1970s. Who was the singer who also charted with "God Must Be a Cowboy"?

Answer: Dan Seals

Dan Seals recorded several popular songs during the 1970s (and very early 1980s) with John Coley when they were billed as England Dan and John Ford Coley. "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" did very well for them in 1976.
During the early 1980s, Dan Seals moved to Nashville to seek a career in country music. His move was not an immediate success. When he released "Meet Me In Montana" - a duet with the lovely Marie Osmond - his "new" direction took effect. During the 1980s Dan Seals would enjoy success with several more songs; some would reach that number one position on the (US and Canadian) Country Charts.
Dan Seals is the younger brother of Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts fame.
7. "U Can't Touch This" by this artist was such a popular dance song it has been used in film, TV shows, commercials and other forms of media. So much so, it was considered the signature song of the singer/dancer who recorded it. Who released that rap/hip-hop song early in the year of 1990?

MC Hammer rose to fame with this breakout single - "U Can't Touch This". The song grabbed the attention of music fans worldwide, it was an instant hit. "U Can't Touch This" was featured on Hammer's third studio album, "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em" that was released in 1990. That album would become the first Hip Hop album to be certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America. (Which means it achieved over ten million units sold in the United States.)
Synonymous with his image of baggy (i.e., "Hammer") pants, flashy jewelry and flamboyant backdrops, the mega-star has been recognized and rewarded for his philanthropy and his faith. His has constantly encouraged other aspiring artists to be devoted to family, to get an education and to persevere within the industry of their choice.

Answer: The Pussycat Dolls

The Pussycat Dolls were originally a dance troupe with their shows done in a style reminiscent of the popular burlesque shows on the 1950s and 1960s, yet adding a contemporary fashion to their singing and dancing. Their first shows were in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s. The group would move their act to Las Vegas and from there the world became their audience.
During the 1990s, the Pussycat Dolls released two albums, "PCD" and "Doll Domination". Both albums did very well; both achieved top ten status on many major music charts - worldwide. Soon their shows and their songs' success lead to tours and appearances and merchandizing and, even, a "Playboy" (magazine) pictorial. Their popularity would be described as "phenomenal".
The song "Don't Cha" was co-written by Busta Rhymes and he can be heard doing his raps with The Pussycat Dolls on their version that achieved world-wide popularity. "Don't Cha" was the first release from their album "PCD" and, apparently, set the pace.

Snoop Dogg released his first studio album, "Doggystyle", late in 1993; it achieved the number one position on both US Billboard 200 and US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album. That was only the beginning for Snoop. As of the early 2020s he had sold over 37 million albums worldwide.

Answer: Pink

When Pink (also stylized as P!nk) and Kenny Chesney released "Setting the World on Fire" in 2016 it sold over 93,000 copies its first week - a new record for Chesney's songs at that time. Kenny Chesney has said (in an interview with "Songfacts") that he delayed the production of his album, "Cosmic Hallelujah", to be able to include the duet with Pink. It was the right decision. The song would achieve double-platinum status and be nominated for the "Best County Duo/Group Performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
