Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home" Who had a hit in 1995 with this tune?

Answer: Joan Osbourne

"One of Us" was written by Eric Bazilian of the band The Hooters, and Osbourne scored a Top 40 spot with her performance of it. The single reached #4 on the Billboard charts, and received several Grammy nominations (including Song of the Year and Record of the Year).
2. "God save the queen The fascist regime They made you a moron Potential H-bomb" What punk band hit #2 on the UK charts with this song in 1977?

Answer: The Sex Pistols

"God Save the Queen" was the Sex Pistols' second single (after "Anarchy in the U.K."). It has been covered by Motorhead and Anthrax. The British national anthem is also called "God Save the Queen", but obviously the lyrics are a bit different...
3. "Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends. So oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?" Which rock legend recorded this song in 1970?

Answer: Janis Joplin

"Mercedes Benz" was the last full song Joplin ever recorded--she died three days later, of a heroin overdose. The automaker Mercedes-Benz actually used the song in some of its commercials, not realizing, perhaps, that the lyrics were heavily ironic and that materialism (including the desire for luxury cars) was being mocked.
4. "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours But I think that God's got a sick sense of humor And when I die I expect to find Him laughing." Which electronic group recorded this song in 1984?

Answer: Depeche Mode

"Blasphemous Rumours" and "Somebody" were recorded as a double A-side single by the band, but both songs came from the album "Some Great Reward". Depeche Mode peaked at #54 on the American charts with the album, but #5 in the UK.
5. "God of thunder and rock and roll The spell you're under Will slowly rob you of your virgin soul." What blood-spitting band sang this song in 1976?

Answer: Kiss

"God of Thunder" appeared on Kiss's album "Destroyer", and was written by (and for) Paul Stanley. However, the band's producer suggested that it would be better if Gene Simmons sang it, and it's since become his signature song. It's been covered by White Zombie and the Melvins. Kiss also sang a song called "God Gave Rock and Roll To You", which appeared in that movie classic "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" (it was a reworking of a previous song of the same title by English rock band Argent. Thanks to player Jazzdog for the edit!).
6. "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers." Which country music titan sang this song in 1990?

Answer: Garth Brooks

Brooks' "Unanswered Prayers" reached #1 on the Billboard country charts, along with three other singles from the album "No Fences" ("Friends in Low Places", "The Thunder Rolls" and "Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House" were the others). Brooks said this about the song: "Every time I sing this song it teaches me the same lesson. Happiness isn't about getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got".
7. "My Sweet Lord oh my Lord oh my Lord. I really want to see you; Really want to be with you. Really want to see you Lord But it takes so long" Which ex-Beatle had a hit with this song in 1970?

Answer: George Harrison

"My Sweet Lord" was the first single by one of the solo Beatles to hit #1, and it reached #1 again in 2002 when Harrison died. The song is notable because it was the touchstone of a years-long lawsuit claiming that Harrison had stolen the tune from the Chiffons (their "He's So Fine" sounds a LOT like "My Sweet Lord"), but eventually the ex-Beatle would buy the rights to "He's So Fine".
8. "Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle Life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle Thank God I'm a country boy" Who was this country boy?

Answer: John Denver

1974's "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" appeared on Denver's album "Back Home Again", and a year later a live version hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is played immediately after "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch at Baltimore Orioles home games.
9. "Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son" Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on" God say, "No." Abe say, "What?" God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but The next time you see me comin' you better run" Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?" God says, "Out on Highway 61." Who sang this song in 1965?

Answer: Bob Dylan

"Highway 61 Revisited", from the album of the same name (Dylan's sixth studio album) was covered by P.J. Harvey, Johnny Cash and Johnny Winter. The album was ranked #4 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the best records of all time--it also contained "Like a Rolling Stone", "Queen Jane Approximately" and "Desolation Row".
10. "Them that's got shall get Them that's not shall lose So the Bible said and it still is news Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child who's got his own Who's got his own" Which Lady had a hit with this song in 1941?

Answer: Billie Holiday

"God Bless the Child" has been covered by basically everybody (Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Moby, and many others), but Lady Day wrote it in 1939 (with Arthur Herzog, Jr.) The song is in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and, even more importantly, was recorded by Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith).
