Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Legend

Answer: Bob Marley

Released in 1984, "Legend", a compilation of songs by Bob Marley and the Wailers, quickly rose through the ranks to become the highest-selling reggae album of all time. Notably, Marley passed away in 1981, making this a powerful posthumous collection. Featured on this one are all of the classics including "Is This Love", "No Woman, No Cry", "Buffalo Soldier", and "Get Up, Stand Up" amongst others.

The album has, since its release, reappeared on the Billboard charts in the U.S., the UK Albums Chart, and similar listings on an annual basis.
2. The Hits: Chapter One

Answer: Backstreet Boys

With the Backstreet Boys hitting their peak at the turn of the century (and the millennium), their inevitable Greatest Hits album couldn't come soon enough for their rabid fanbase. Their label struck while the iron was hot, releasing "The Hits: Chapter One" in 2001, a couple years before the group's tenth anniversary. Peaking at number four on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and number five on the UK Albums Chart, it ended up being a massive success, bringing with it the new single "Drowning" alongside chart-toppers from their three preceding albums.

They would go on hiatus soon after and their music wouldn't hit the same heights again.
3. Time Flies... 1994-2009

Answer: Oasis

A two-disc collection of Oasis' biggest hits from the start of their career (the "Definitely Maybe" album in 1994) to the bitter end ("Dig Out Your Soul" in 2009), this Greatest Hits set has all the standards for an Oasis fan including "Wonderwall", "Champagne Supernova", "Live Forever", "Don't Look Back in Anger" and on and on.

The band dissolved after the Gallagher Brothers' feud couldn't be resolved; they went their separate ways with Noel forming Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Liam first taking the rest of the band to form Beady Eye, but setting out as a solo act shortly after.
4. #1's

Answer: Mariah Carey

Cleverly, the album doesn't mess around with its promise, laying out thirteen tracks that placed Mariah Carey at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. along with a handful of others (including "When You Believe", her duet with Whitney Houston). Carey would rerelease the album in 2015 as "Number 1 to Infinity", increasing the track count by five to account for new hit singles like "We Belong Together".

"#1's" doesn't seem to be a one-off either. It's also the name of the Greatest Hits collection for Destiny's Child.
5. Endless Summer

Answer: The Beach Boys

Releasing in 1974, "Endless Summer" encapsulated the hits of the band's mid-1960s run with Capitol Records and was far from the band's only Greatest Hits record-- they had three by that point and more than a dozen would follow. In fact, this one would be followed up very soon after by "Spirit of America", which featured a number of compiled hits and B-sides. "Endless Summer", however, would contain classics like "Surfin' Safari", "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Little Deuce Coupe", and "California Girls" (and the bonus track "Good Vibrations").

Naturally, it topped the US Billboard 200 chart.
6. Curtain Call: The Hits

Answer: Eminem

By the time 2005 rolled around, Eminem had already established himself as a force to be reckoned with in rap, topping the charts with hits, many with crossover appeal, and even starring in the Detroit-set drama "8 Mile" in 2002 and winning the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself". "Curtain Call: The Hits" was far from a last set-- it contained early classics like "My Name Is" and "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me", but he would continue to make chart-toppers.

He eventually released "Curtain Call 2" in 2022.
7. HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I

Answer: Michael Jackson

Releasing in 1995, Michael Jackson's "HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I" was a bit of a two-parter with the first disc in the double album set containing hits like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", Beat It", and "Man in the Mirror". The second disc contained all new material for Jackson leading with the hit single "Scream", performed with his sister, Janet.

The set was massively popular, going multi-platinum around the globe and becoming one of the best-selling albums of all-time. Jackson would have one more album release before his death in 2009.
8. Direct Hits

Answer: The Killers

Wrapping up a collection of hits spanning The Killers' earliest days with "Hot Fuss" all the way through to the end of "Battle Born", "Direct Hits" carried thirteen earlier singles and added two new ones with "Shot at the Night" being the promotional tool for the collection.

It would mark a critical point for the band who, splitting to pursue solo ventures as well, would dive headlong into more traditional heartland rock and stadium-ready tracks for subsequent albums like "Wonderful Wonderful", "Imploding the Mirage", and "Pressure Machine".
9. Dance Again... the Hits

Answer: Jennifer Lopez

"Dance Again... the Hits" took a while to come about for Jennifer Lopez who, after starting a successful music career in the late '90s, managed to continue her success well into the next decades. Appearing in 2012, the songs on the album date back to "Let's Get Loud" (on the deluxe version) and feature something from every studio release to date. Of note, the song "Dance Again", released as a brand new single for the album, made it onto six different U.S. Billboard charts upon its debut, going Platinum in the States.
10. The Immaculate Collection

Answer: Madonna

Madonna's first compilation disc, "The Immaculate Collection" hit stores in 1990 following her fourth studio album, "Like a Prayer", which appeared in 1989. Covering all of her major hits from the '80s, it also introduced the track "Justify My Love", which hit number one on five different US Billboard charts (and number two on the UK Singles Chart).

She would follow the disc up with "Erotica" in 1992, rebuilding her image once again. "GHV2", or "Greatest Hits Volume 2", would follow in 2001 to cover her hits from the '90s (and "Music" from 2000) and "Celebration", released in 2009, would include thirty-four greatest hits singles.
