Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I think my quiz is finished but will the editors agree? Three of these questions are NOT ready and one is ready. Which one is proofread?

Answer: Who sang "Oops, I Did It Again"?

Who sang "Oops, I Did It Again"? is correctly written for music's guidelines when mentioned in a text. Or "Oops, I Did It Again", Britney Spears for a stand-alone, or in a lyrics quiz you may leave them off if the song appears as a 'stand-alone' answer. You will need to use the capitals properly though. Dean's car is the correct way to write the possessive and accident is obviously misspelled. Jeremy's favorite meal is material that is normally based on fan literature or websites and is subject to change and not citable therefore not allowed in quizzes. Hair color, preferences, tastes and things from the press don't work well.

By the way, if you use British spelling, use it throughout your document and if you use American, Australian, Canadian spelling rules, be consistent. Our editing staff has people from all regions of the world. Never use u and r abbreviations in your writing however.
2. Here are some sample sentences in information blanks. Which of the following is ready for the editors' eagle eyes to examine?

Answer: In 1999, Jon's son Nat was born and Jon dedicated a song to him entitled, "Baby Mine".

In 1999, Jon's son Nat was born and Jon dedicated a song to him entitled, "Baby Mine". The only information that is usable for your quiz is the 1999 one as there is a musical event that is documented as well as a personal event. The others are all subject to change.

As anyone knows who reads the papers or magazines, show biz relationships aren't exactly the most durable! Now, if you were to say, "In 1996 Jon married Karen Jet who was singing in the group Stargirls", that would be closer, but probably best avoided unless it's really pertinent to the music in the quiz.

In music it's better to relate an event to the music. Here's another one, "In 1996, Jon wrote the song, "You're Looking Lovely Tonight" for his wife Karen, a singer in the group Stargirls at that time. If Jon's marital status changes, Karen's gig changes, your quiz will be outdated very quickly unless you think it out.
3. Which is the BEST question (including True or false types) amongst the following?

Answer: Jimmy Jump fell off the stage during the 1999 Paris concert performance while singing, "Somersault".

Jimmy Jump fell off the stage during the 1999 Paris concert performance while singing, "Somersault". I certainly hope that the answer was obvious to you. I'll assume you did not pick the one on tattoos, it's obvious that if the guys go out and get a few more some night, your question will be outdated rapidly! Nor do people tend to like questions about what message is tattooed on the person's arm or other places.

The editing staff prefers you don't put down anatomical information either, unless it is something pertinent to the music. So things like that don't work in quizzes. An 'as of' question is very awkward as if your quiz remains online for a few years, and many of them have, it will be obsolete. If you did this for the Beatles perhaps, because they broke up a long time ago but for a band that is currently performing and might undergo changes, it is best to avoid this. How many guitars has he wrecked on stage? Well this is clear why it won't work. Now, if you really wanted to write it up, you might say, "During a performance of "Somersault" in 1999 in Chicago singer Jimmy Jump wrecked his guitar and burnt it" however it isn't advised unless it's a well-known fact.
4. Which of the following information blanks works BEST for a lyrics quiz?

Answer: Natasha dedicated this song to her sister Sarah who overcame a serious illness.

Natasha dedicated this song to her sister Sarah who overcame a serious illness. If an event or fact is pertinent to the song, then it is good information. However, avoid putting down the singer's siblings or family members unless it is important to your song or musically.

The reason you don't want to put down the track numbers (or page numbers of written info) is that we are international, and people will listen to the music in different formats, and, well how interesting do YOU find it? Sorry, I'm afraid we do explain this one to beginners a bit too often.

When you simply explain what is in the song in your info blank, it doesn't make for a very enjoyable quiz as the person taking it probably knows it anyway, or else why would they take it?
5. Fill in the blanks or FITBS for short, should be used very sparingly like a precious color. And new quiz makers are not allowed to use them in music and other categories at Quizzyland. When you eventually want to use an FITB, which of the following is the BEST choice for an FITB?

Answer: Misty

"Misty" is the only one that is a clear-cut answer, "My Bonnie" is too many words to be as sure fire, and may also be spelled Bonny therefore you'll get correction notices on it whether it's spelled that way or not. Ravel's "Bolero" requires an apostrophe, these should be avoided. Alternative spellings for misspelled words are not allowed in these circumstances. If you do a title with several words there is a great chance of error of the person typing it in wrong etc. Even an extra space may cause a false wrong answer. One other thing we have seen is that some people give an alternative, such as "Name one of the two songwriters who worked on this film?", and this should not be done.
6. Here's another sample FITB for you. Which of the following answers works BEST for a lyrics quiz?

Answer: Hotel California

If I forgot to mention it, Quizzyland is not case-sensitive for answers so no need to remind people about capitals. Now, Hotel California is the best one as it does not require punctuation and is easily spelled. Even something as simple as "Hey Jude" might give you trouble though, should you put a comma or not? So the others require alternative spellings or with or without the article or 'the'.

They should be avoided. Many times we are told that you want to make the quiz more challenging, but remember it shouldn't be a typing test and a slight variation get you a wrong answer.

A challenging multiple choice that is well-written is the best choice for a quiz here at Quizzyland.
7. Which of the following information blurbs works BEST for a song quiz?

Answer: This song was written about the Vietnam War and Guthrie's opposition to the draft.

"Alice's Restaurant" is a song about the ludicrous draft procedure during the Vietnam War and the statement about it in terms of the song is the most specific. Arlo being folksinger Woody Guthrie's son is fine but less helpful when speaking about a song. Your opinions, well, you may put a few in, but they must come after the statements.
8. Which of the following is acceptable as a true false question?

Answer: In 1965 Jon wrote the theme song for the cartoon show "Lunarama" called, "Jump For the Moon".

I think that one is very obvious. Here's a hint for you though, true false questions tend to bore quiz takers unless you use them very sparingly. They lose nothing by guessing and you use a lot of info for not much. Once again avoid using things that might change. Aretha Franklin might have more grandchildren, even after she passes away. Joe might get remarried and have other children. I guess if we hadn't received about five hundred submissions with things like this on it, I would not be writing this quiz though.
9. Here are some more true false questions, which one works the BEST?

Answer: "Turaraluralura" won the Academy Award for the best song in 1938.

I'm making up these titles but the correct answer is factual and you can document it. The Joan Ramada one is opinion. The Bobby one is clearly subject to change and not documented. And the hairstyles and colors are obviously subject to change, though Mick Jagger's hair has not changed much over the years! If you were to talk about a specific appearance you could say, "In Elton's royal performance in 1980, he wore high heels and rhinestone glasses and made the Queen Mum faint", but not a very good thing for a true and false question.
10. Here are some more true false questions for you to proofread. Can you find the question that is ready to submit to music?

Answer: "Mississippi Nocturne" was composed in 1945.

"Mississippi Nocturne" was composed in 1945. Quizzyland's music section requires you to capitalize proper nouns and put song and album titles within quotation marks in text. "Overture in B Flat" would be the correct way to write it in this example. The other two have spelling errors. One more thing though, always remember to limit your true false questions per quiz. Now, hope you have survived this quiz, remember that our volunteer editing staff is there to help you to get your work in shape, but not to do the work for you.

The more work you put in beforehand, the quicker we'll get you online and your quiz will get the attention it deserves.
