Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song titled "You Can't Always Get What You Want," what does the lead singer, famous for his curled lips and swagger, say his favorite soda flavor is?

Answer: Cherry Red

Mick Jagger was the lead singer of this band; it was, in fact, the Rolling Stones! The London Bach Choir sang the opening bars of the song, first released in late 1969 off the album "Let it Bleed."

Here's the lyric: "We decided that we would have a soda. My favorite flavor, Cherry Red."
2. What two cities are mentioned in a song that some have described as "the Disney Fantasy tune" of their career, entitled "The Song Remains the Same," by none other than Led Zeppelin?

Answer: Honolulu and Calcutta

The state of California is also mentioned in the song. In addition, there was a movie released in 1976 of the same name, highlighting the band's live concerts and throwing in a few fantasy sequences.

The lyrics are: "California sunlight, sweet Calcutta rain, Honolulu starbright...The song remains the same!"
3. This song is what the audience yells when a band isn't playing quite up to standards! "Free Bird" is by a legendary southern rock band from the United States. Finish the lyric: "Lord knows, I can't ________!"

Answer: change

"Won't you fly, high, free bird? (awesome solo)"

Lynyrd Skynyrd was from Jacksonville, Florida. One day, the gym teacher of a certain high school down there sent a few guys to the principal's office for having long hair. And ever since then, the music lives on! "Free Bird" is the most requested song in America.

They also wrote another popular tune, titled "Sweet Home Alabama." That song was sampled by Kid Rock in 2008 on the song "All Summer Long".
4. Santana is probably the best known Mexican guitarist. What does he say that a certain "Black Magic Woman" is going to make of him?

Answer: A devil

That song came from the album "Abraxas" by Santana, but before that, from Fleetwood Mac's "English Rose" album! In Fleetwood Mac's live performances, a band member would always remind the audience that it was a Fleetwood song before it was a hit for Santana.

For all of the lyric hunters: " Well she's a black magic woman; she's gonna make a devil outta me."
5. This mystical song entitled "Riders on the Storm" was sung by Jim Morrison and his band in the late 60's. It contains what many English teachers would call a simile. Finish this one: "Like a dog without a bone, an actor out on __________."

Answer: loan

"Riders on the Storm" is a very quiet song, which features real thunder and rain sound effects. The keyboards are played by Ray Manzarek, of the Doors. Some say that this song is about a serial killer.
6. The Zombies was a group characterized by one song, titled "Time of the Season." The band was formed by Rod Argent in 1959. This song was said to describe 1967, the Summer of Love, and many people accept it as the iconic single of the late 60s. What is the second question that Colin Blunstone asks a girl during the song?

Answer: Who's your daddy?

Colin Blunstone, singer of the Zombies, was furious at Rod Argent for telling him to sing this song a certain way. In a fit, he told Argent to "sing it [him]self." However, he finally agreed to sing the song and it became a classic.

Here are the questions, in order:
"What's your name?
Who's your daddy?
Is he rich like me?
Has he taken any time to show you what you need to live?"
7. Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath have had so many pioneering heavy metal hits over the years. In which song do you hear the cries of "Witches at black masses?"

Answer: War Pigs

This song was critical of the Vietnam War, and it attacked politicians and everyone who was "making war just for fun," as the song says.

Drumroll for the lyrics: "Generals gathered at their masses, just like witches at black masses."
8. Why is Eric Clapton looking for a reason in the song "Let it Grow?"

Answer: To check out of his mind.

This beautiful song was from the album "461 Ocean Boulevard," which marked his getting clean after years of heroin abuse. It also happened to be the second album after Derek & the Dominos broke up. This album also contains Eric's version of "I Shot the Sheriff" which was originally written by Bob Marley.

These gorgeous lyrics are: "Lookin' for a reason, to check out of my mind. Trying hard to get a friend that I can count on."
9. What does Bon Scott say during the song "It's a Long Way to the Top (If you Wanna Rock and Roll)" that deals with "being the star of the stage and screen?"

Answer: Look out it's rough and mean.

This AC/DC song featured bagpipes in the middle instrumental section, played by Bon Scott. To this day, Brian Johnson does not perform this song out of respect for his predecessor. It doesn't get any more Scottish than this!

Bon Scott screamed: "If you wanna be a star of stage and screen, look out it's rough and mean. It's a long way, to the top, if you wanna rock and roll."
10. Okay, more songs with parentheses in the titles! This time the song is "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)." When the Moody Blues are traveling, what do they hear?

Answer: So many words

John Lodge, bassist of the Moody Blues, received an ASCAP award for writing this song. It featured a chamberlin, which was a synthesizer that had just replaced the mellotron.

The lyrics: "I'm just a singer on the face of this earth. Meeting so many people, who are trying to be free. And while I'm traveling I hear so many words."
11. Ray Davies of the Kinks said that he's "Not the world's most physical guy but when she squeezed [him] tight she nearly broke [his] spine." Who is "she?" Hint: It's also the name of the song.

Answer: Lola

"Lola" was written in 1969. The song originally contained the lyrics "When you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola..." but because of UK radio laws, they had to change the lyric to "...cherry cola..." This forced the Kinks to interrupt their American tour and travel from New York to London and back, just to dub in the changed lyric.
12. Back to Led Zeppelin. This is a harder one! On the album "Led Zeppelin I", the song "How Many More Times" contains the first name of a girl. What name is this? Here's a sample: "...Oh __________, oh girl. Oh _________, oh girl. Steal away now, steal away..."

Answer: Rosie

This song highlighted the use of improvisation that early Zeppelin was famous for. During live performances, the band would start with "How Many More Times," and in the middle, thay'd insert a louder, heavier version of an old 50s rockabilly tune.

On the album, this song was credited as being 3 minutes and 30 seconds long, the length is actually closer to 8 minutes and 30 seconds, therefore making it the longest song on the album. Page did this on purpose so the song would get more radio play.
13. According to Bad Company, what is Destiny in the song with the same title as the band?

Answer: The rising sun

The song "Bad Company" was released on the album "Bad Company," which was created by the band Bad Company. Pretty crazy to think about, huh? The band was managed by Peter Grant, who also guided Led Zeppelin to success. This album, and their next five after that were released on the Swan Song record label, which was founded by the members of Led Zeppelin.

Lyric: "Company, always on the run. Destiny, is the rising sun."
14. When the members of Supertramp were young, how did life seem? It is quite "The Logical Song", so tell me about this first line.

Answer: Wonderful, a miracle, beautiful, and magical

This first line was taken from "The Logical Song." This song, off of the album "Breakfast in America," was written by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. It described how human innocence is lost as a whole in society.

This is what Supertramp has to say: "When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, it was beautiful, magical."
15. In the song "Carry On/Questions" by Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young), what were the Fortunes of Fables able to do?

Answer: Sing the song

This song was written by Stephen Stills, and it was the first track on the album "Deja Vu." This song did not include any contributions from Neil Young. However, Neil Young was an addition to the Crosby, Stills, and Nash supergroup.

I love this song; here are the words: "The fortunes, of fables, are able...to sing the song."
16. Some people sure hate hunting. The Guess Who wrote a song about guns, way back in 1972. In the song, what animal is "all gone"?

Answer: Eagle

This song was extremely critical of hunters. It was written for the album "Rockin'," which was released in 1972.

The Guess Who performed at Nixon's inauguration. However, they conspicuously left their signature song "American Woman" out of their set.

"Eagle all gone, no more caribou. Guns, guns, guns."
17. Ian Thomas had a one-hit classic rock wonder with the song "Painted Ladies." Finish this lyric: "I kept walking and the rain kept ________."

Answer: raining

Ian Thomas was bestowed a Juno Award for "Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year" in 1974. This was his only hit, however.
18. You might remember Peter Frampton's live album: "Frampton Comes Alive." Who was saluted for his keyboard performance on the song "Do You Feel Like We Do?"

Answer: Bob Mayo

Peter Frampton is known for his signature talk-box, which is an effects machine that creates a "zippery" effect, similar to sliding a plectrum down a ridged guitar string. As for lyrics, this was a spontaneous shout out. It went: "Bob Mayo, everybody."
19. Pink Floyd released an album called "Wish You Were Here" in 1975. On the album's second track, titled "Welcome to the Machine," the "big star" in the man's dream drove what vehicle?

Answer: A Jaguar

This song was critical of the music business, and features a somewhat pulsating beat, which often changes time signatures. You can hear the changes in time if you listen closely. The song also features many coordinated synthesizers, which hum and throb along to the beat.

The words are: "You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar. He always ate in a Steak Bar, he loved to drive in his Jaguar."
20. I think we'll end with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers today. The song "Refugee" was written by Petty, and also by Mike Campbell. Finish the lyric: "Who knows why you wanna lay there and ______ ____ ______ ________. "

Answer: Revel in your abandon

Tom Petty had some amazing times. He met Elvis when he was ten years old, and one of his guitar teachers was Don Felder, who was later to join the Eagles.
