Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tell the leaves not to turn."

Answer: Don't Tell Me

While Madonna's leading single for her eighth album ended up being "Music", "Don't Tell Me" followed close behind, giving her a charting single that, for the first time, infused country pop into her layered productions. The track managed to hit number four on the Billboard Hot 100, allowing her to reach the same number of top ten singles as The Beatles.

The music video, featuring Madonna performing line dance-inspired choreography and riding a mechanical bull, encapsulated her image for this brief time, even if it was short-lived.

Her following single, "What It Feels Like for a Girl", brought her back to the electronica.
2. "...when your heart beats next to mine."

Answer: Like a Virgin

One of Madonna's most popular songs from the 1980s, "Like a Virgin" (from the album of the same name) catapulted her into stardom. The track itself landed at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, on three other U.S. charts, and in Canada and Australia. Madonna would have six more Hot 100 chart-toppers in the 1980s. Notably, "Like a Virgin" featured a music video in which she danced and sang on a Venetian gondola.
3. "Some boys romance, some boys slow dance. That's all right with me."

Answer: Material Girl

While "Like a Virgin" took the world by storm, Madonna's 1985 follow-up from the same album, "Material Girl", only further cemented her hold on pop music. Hitting number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart, the song's title would result in Madonna being referred to as a 'material girl' for decades, something she's gone on record as regretting. Further complicating this was her choice to portray Marilyn Monroe in her music video for the song, parodying "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend".
4. "Time goes by so slowly."

Answer: Hung Up

While Madonna's reemergence into mainstream pop-- few strings attached-- was to her benefit in the early 2000s, the tides shifted once again as Madonna made it to the back half of the decade. With that, her tenth album release, "Confessions on a Dance Floor", changed things once more, this time pushing Madonna into a highly-praised studio release of electropop and Euro club numbers led by "Hung Up", a track characterized by its sampling of ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)". The song hit number one worldwide, winning a Guinness World Record for international chart-topping.
5. "Hey, Mr. DJ put a record on, I wanna dance with my baby."

Answer: Music

Pushing Madonna into a new pop space by incorporating country elements (especially in look) to her eighth studio album, "Music", the title track helped Madonna achieve another colossal hit, her first of the twenty-first century. The song "Music" went platinum in the U.S., reaching number one on three Billboard charts there (including the Hot 100) as well as on the UK Singles Chart and in Australia and Canada.

It would take a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year as well.
6. "Let's forget about time and dance our lives away."

Answer: Give Me All Your Luvin'

In 2010, Madonna's twelfth album, "MDNA", hit stores and its leading track was the infectious pop song "Give Me All Your Luvin'", which featured rap artists Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. in their own solo verses. Though the album wasn't well-received critically, it managed to escalate Madonna's further career growth into the new decade.

The song still managed number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 (and number one in Canada) while "MDNA" went number one, as an album, in the U.S., the UK, and more.
7. "If I'm smart then I'll run away, but I'm not so I guess I'll stay."

Answer: Beautiful Stranger

Madonna's final single of the twentieth century, "Beautiful Stranger" didn't appear on one of her studio albums, but instead as part of the official soundtrack for the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me". Part psychedelic pop, the song is meant to fit into the world of the mock-James Bond character who, unthawed after spending decades cryogenically frozen, jumps back and forth in time in this sequel. Though not a top hit in the U.S. it won a Grammy and peaked at the top of the charts in Canada.

It would hit number two on the UK Singles Chart.
8. "You waste your time with hate and regret."

Answer: Frozen

After a rocky period through the mid-1990s during which Madonna contested with critics and starred in the film "Evita" (for which her vocals were praised), she returned with a new aesthetic in 1998, sending the more electronically-inclined "Ray of Light" into the world.

The album's first single, "Frozen", brought her closer to the top of the charts than any other tracks in a handful of albums, giving her a number one track on the UK Singles Chart for the first time since "Vogue".
9. "Everybody spread the word. We're gonna have a celebration."

Answer: Holiday

Madonna's first major international hit, "Holiday" was the third single from her self-titled debut album but the first to hit number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in the U.S. (hitting number sixteen on the Hot 100). Though "Lucky Star" would do better on the Hot 100 in the same year, reaching number four, "Holiday" is likely the more enduring of the two.

After going gold in the UK, the song would be a key concert staple, even into the twentieth century, acting as a tour setlist closer.
10. "I'm gonna wake up, yes and no."

Answer: Die Another Day

Joining the ranks of Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner, and Sheryl Crow, Madonna was brought on to sing the theme song of the twentieth James Bond movie release, "Die Another Day", in 2002. With sweeping strings and electronic beats, the song was unlike many of the earlier tracks in the Pierce Brosnan era, some of which were as bombastic as the classics of earlier decades. Madonna would later add the song to the track list for her ninth album, the 2003 release "American Life".
11. "Something's comin' over me."

Answer: Secret

After Madonna's highly-regarded fifth album, "Erotica", pushed the limits of her artistic capabilities in the early 1990s, she returned in late 1994 with her mainstream offering "Bedtime Stories", which pulled her songs into a clearer pop-R&B sphere. "Secret" was the first single from the album and it charted on seven Billboard charts in the U.S., peaking at number three on the Hot 100.

Her subsequent single, "Take a Bow", was more popular in this regard. At the top of the Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks, it gave her more number one singles than any previous female solo artist.
12. "And I feel like I just got home."

Answer: Ray of Light

Continuing Madonna's reclaiming of mainstream radio play with "Frozen", "Ray of Light" was pushed as the second single from her seventh album (also called "Ray of Light"). Pushing into the electronic dance vibes that pervaded the turn of the century, the track was a big hit, topping the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and hitting number two on the UK Singles Chart.

The song would win two Grammy Awards and miss out on Record of the Year, but only because it was claimed in an awards-season sweep by Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On".
13. "In the midnight hour, I can feel your power."

Answer: Like a Prayer

As Madonna continued her winning steak with "True Blue" in the mid-1980s, it seemed clear that she was primed to continue topping charts. When "Like a Prayer" released in 1989, the speculation proved true; the album topped the charts internationally with the title track being her biggest hit to date, hitting number one in the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe. Madonna's first platinum track in the U.S. and UK, the song was praised by music critics and devoured by fans, but condemned by the Catholic church; the Pope sought its banning.
14. "I've heard it all before."

Answer: Sorry

While "Sorry", the second single from "Confessions on a Dance Floor", didn't fare well on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., it was a major success elsewhere in the world, topping the charts in most other markets, especially Europe, where the dance beats of Madonna's tenth full album resonated the most in clubs.

The music video followed up almost directly after the events seen in the video for "Hung Up", continuing the party.
15. "Strike a pose."

Answer: Vogue

After "Like a Prayer" dominated the charts, Madonna returned with her 1990 soundtrack album, "I'm Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy"; she had starred in the movie. One of the main takeaways from the album would be an immense dance hit that would carry through the decade-- "Vogue", which was inspired by Ball culture from New York City.

Interestingly, the music video for this song was made by a young David Fincher, who would go on to direct Hollywood films like "Se7en" and "Fight Club".
