Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "...velvet kisses..."

Answer: Dress You Up

This single from "Like a Virgin" reached number 5 in the US in August 1985. Footage for the video was shot live at Madonna's "Like a Virgin" tour.
2. "..sailed a thousand ships..."

Answer: True Blue

This upbeat song from the album of the same name reached number 3 in the US in October 1986, but made it all the way to the top in the UK. The line, of course, refers to the legendary Helen of Troy of Greek myth, whose face was so beautiful it was said to have launched a thousand ships.
3. "...rub this magic lantern..."

Answer: Dear Jessie

This single from "Like a Prayer" was never very popular in the US; in fact, it was never released as a single. It reached number 5 in the UK in December 1989.
4. "...I'm not a fascist...."

Answer: Rescue Me

You don't see the word "fascist" very often in songs; it is defined as a reactionary or dictatorial person. This song, the second single released from 1990's "The Immaculate Collection", went to number 9 in the US in March 1991.
5. "..drunk by six.."

Answer: Bad Girl

This song, in which Madonna tells us exactly why she's a "Bad Girl", wasn't very popular; it only reached number 36 in the US charts in February 1993. In fact, it was her second single since "Holiday" not to make the US top 10 (the first was "Oh Father"). It's from the "Erotica" album, released in 1993.
6. "...queen on a throne..."

Answer: Express Yourself

Madonna says that a good man should, among other things, "make you feel like a queen on a throne". (yea, right!) This song, from the album, reached number 2 in the US in June 1989.
7. "..making the most of the dark..."

Answer: Crazy for You

This slow song was the only highlight of the otherwise forgettable 1985 movie "Vision Quest". Found on the soundtrack, the song hit number 1 in the US in March 1985.
8. "..I hit the big time.."

Answer: Keep it Together

In my opinion, this was one of Madonna's most underappreciated songs; a single from "Like a Prayer", it only reached number 8 in the US, in February of 1990.
9. "..the sun has kissed me.."

Answer: Secret Garden

This single from "Erotica" is one of Madonna's lesser-known songs.
10. "..ladies with an attitude..."

Answer: Vogue

One of Madonna's most popular songs, this release from the album "I'm Breathless: (Music from Dick Tracy)" hit number 1 in the US in April 1990. It was said to be inspired by the dance style known as "voguing" which was popular in the underground dance clubs that Madonna frequented before she became famous.
11. "...it's how you play the game.."

Answer: Causing a Commotion

"It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's how you play the game so get into the groove." From "Causing a Commotion", from the "Who's That Girl?" soundtrack. This fun upbeat song reached number 2 in the US in September 1987.
12. "..bourgeoisie.."

Answer: Music

The word bourgeoisie (pronounced "boozh-wa-zee"), French for "middle class", is definitely not heard often in songs. This is from the smash hit "Music", which reached number 1 in both the US and UK in 2000. "Music" was the first single that Madonna released on DVD.
13. "..I'm in trouble deep..."

Answer: Papa Don't Preach

One of Madonna's most popular songs, this tale of unplanned teen pregnancy reached number 1 in both the US and UK in the summer of 1986.
14. "..when the samba played.."

Answer: La Isla Bonita

"La Isla Bonita" ("beautiful island") reached number 4 in the US, but hit number 1 in the UK in 1987. This fun song with a Latin beat is from the album "True Blue".
15. "..light up my life..."

Answer: Who's That Girl

The movie by the same name was a flop, but the song was a hit; it went to number 1 in July 1987. In the song, Madonna continues her Latin influence with some Spanish: "Quien es esa nina, who's that girl- Senorita, mas fina, who's that girl?"
16. "...I'll hit you like a truck..."

Answer: Erotica

Very romantic. This ode to fetishes is best known for its intro: "My name is Dita. I'll be your mistress tonight". Dita von Teese was a famous pinup model who specialized in lingerie/fetish wear. This song reached number 3 in the US in October 1992.
17. "...I'll make you love me..."

Answer: Open Your Heart

This song, one of my personal Madonna favorites, hit number 1 in the US in December 1986. It's perhaps best known for its risque video, which features Madonna prancing around in lingerie while a little boy watches her.
18. "...all the world is a stage..."

Answer: Take a Bow

This ballad, written by Madonna and Babyface, is from the 1994 album "Bedtime Stories". It reached number 1 in the US in December 1994, but only got to number 16 in the UK.
19. "...in the barrio..."

Answer: Spanish Eyes

This ballad with religious overtones was released on the 1989 album "Like a Prayer".
20. "...tell me your fears..."

Answer: Justify My Love

Madonna outdid herself with this racy song, which reached number 1 in the US in November 1990. The video for this song had the honor of being named the number 1 video on VH1's "The 50 Sexiest Video Moments".
21. "...now I know you're mine..."

Answer: Into the Groove

Interestingly, this was never released as a single in the US; however, it did reach number 1 in the UK in July 1985. This song, one of my favorites, was written for Madonna's first movie, "Desperately Seeking Susan".
22. "...this is a bust..."

Answer: White Heat

"..cause my love is dangerous..." This song from "True Blue" was never one of Madonna's most popular.
23. "...feels like flying..."

Answer: Like a Prayer

This song, from the album of the same name, hit number 1 in the US in March 1989. It's best known for its controversial video, which features a black Jesus, burning crosses, and a singing gospel choir. Actually, the song represents Madonna's own conflicting feelings about her Catholic upbringing.
24. "...the windmills of my eyes..."

Answer: Love Don't Live Here Anymore

This gramatically incorrect song appears on the 1996 album "Something to Remember".
25. "...I start to glow..."

Answer: Lucky Star

This was one of Madonna's first big hits, from her debut album, "Madonna". It went to number 4 on the US charts in September 1984.
