Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start off with, what else, but music played in the movie "Titanic": What Johan Strauss II composition is playing when Jack Dawson descends the Grand Staircase in his tuxedo for the first time?

Answer: The Blue Danube

This well-known piece of music sets an elegant ambience for the first-class section of the ship. It is a waltz performed by the chamber music ensemble I Salonisti, who have double duty in the film as they also portray the ship's orchestra. "The Blue Danube" is an era-appropriate piece as it was very popular during the early 20th century.
"Waltz of the Flowers" is from "The Nutcracker" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
"Clair de Lune" is by Claude Debussy, and "The Magic Flute", is by Wolfgang Mozart
2. In the Broadway musical "Titanic: The Musical" one of the fan favorite songs is "The Proposal / The Night Was Alive". Which character, a real one on the Titanic, not a fictional character, sings it to "his Bride"?

Answer: Frederick Barrett, a stoker

"The Proposal / The Night Was Alive" is a moving scene, sung by Frederick Barrett, expressing his hopes and dreams for the future as he and his beloved take this journey. Frederick Barrett was an actual stoker aboard The Titanic. Brian D'Arcy James played him in the Broadway production.

The stoker manages the fire in the boiler room, and that's where Frederick Barrett was on the Titanic when it started sinking. He was able to board one of the lifeboats though, and survived. Henry Etches was fictional, a steward serving the first-class passengers. Frank Schultz is actually a character in the musical "Showboat", a performer on the boat. Johnny "Leadville" Brown is almost a "Titanic: The Musical" character but he wasn't; instead he is a character from the musical also involving The Titanic - "The Unsinkable Molly Brown".
3. Woody Guthrie recorded his version of "When That Great Ship Went Down" in 1944, featuring vocals by whom and harmonica by whom?

Answer: Cisco Houston vocals and Sonny Terry on harmonica

Woody Guthrie first heard that traditional American folk song when he was a young man in Okemah, Oklahoma. The song tells the story of the human tragedy of Titanic's sinking. Woody became known for weaving historical events into his storytelling music, so he recorded his version for his album "The Asch Recordings". Singer Cissy Houston was only 11 in 1944, and John Popper of Blues Traveler wasn't born until 1967.

Thelma Houston was born two years after the Guthrie recording, and Wanda Houston was only ten-years-old at the time of the recording. Both Trevor Pinnock and Kenneth Gilbert are notable modern harpsichord players.
4. "Titanic Requiem" is a musical work first performed in April 2012, a month before the death of which music icon, who collaborated with his son on the 15-track piece?

Answer: Robin Gibb

Robin Gibb of the renowned Bee Gees composed "Titanic Requiem" with his son Robin-John Gibb, commemorating the April 15, 1912 sinking of the Titanic. It was first performed in a concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra just five days before the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.

It was sung by RSVP Voices ("Rob Johnston's Singers, Voices, & Performers") and performed at Central Hall, Westminster, under conductor Cliff Masterson. Robin Gibb was slated to sing "Don't Cry Alone", the penultimate song in the concert, but he was too ill obviously to perform. Subsequent to Robin's passing, "Titanic Requiem" was performed at the Titanic Live Concert, in October 2015, with a 60-piece orchestra and a choir of thirty.

It was performed in Italy at the Palamazzola in Taranto.
5. In the movie "Titanic", "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" is heard during the church service scene; fittingly, the hymn is also known by what other title?

Answer: The "Navy Hymn"

The scene comes at about 1 hour and 14 minutes into the film, and is sung by the church congregation at the service, before the Titanic ever hits the iceberg. Also known as "Navy Hymn," the lyrics ask for God's protection for those at sea, which takes on a poignantly ironic meaning since we in the audience know what's about to befall the passengers. "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" is traditionally sung at naval services.

In the scene, most of the cast that we're familiar with: Rose, her family, Molly Brown, the Captain, etc. are all there singing, but not Jack.

In fact, he comes to the service but is denied entrance outside the door.
6. "And the Band Played On (Down Among the Dead Men)", is a 1978 song written and recorded by which Australian band on their album named after the band?

Answer: Flash And The Pan

Siouxsie and the Banshees is a British band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is an American band, and Katrina and the Waves is a British/American band.

Flash and the Pan was an Australian band, and their debut album "Flash and the Pan" contained the song "And the Band Played On (Down Among the Dead Men)" written by members Henry Vanda and George Young. The album peaked at Number 80 on the U.S. Billboard 200, while the single "And the Band Played On (Down Among the Dead Men was released in the United Kingdom, and reached Number 54 in September 1978.
"It was night
A starry moonless sight
Out in the mid-Atlantic
There sailed a ship of light
She was big This ship of luxury
Everything was peaceful
No safer place to be."
and later:
"The master in command
A man with wealth of wisdom
A fine upstanding man
But the fog He didn't hear the calls
The ice mountain was waiting
For fifteen hundred souls"
7. What palindrome song by the English heavy metal band Saxon shares its title with a song from another band, whose name is also a palindrome?

Answer: S.O.S.

"S.O.S." by Saxon is from their 1988 album "Destiny" and relates the story of the Titanic's sinking starting with its departure:
"The band played and the cameras turned
As the bottle smashed on her bow
The flagship of the gilded age
Moved slowly out to sea
Never had such luxury
Been seen afloat before
They said she was unsinkable
The fools were wrong once more."

Saxon's "S.O.S." is laden with heavy guitar riffs and an explosive vocal style, much unlike ABBA's pop harmonies and ultra catchy "S.O.S." Also, ABBA's song is not about the Titanic at all.
8. "Band Played On" is about the Titanic and is from the 2012 album "Analog Man", by what rock star, whose brother-in-law Ringo Starr played drums on it?

Answer: Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh, the American guitarist who gained fame with The James Gang and then the Eagles, is married to Marjorie Bach, the sister of Ringo Starr's wife, Barbara Bach, making the two of them brothers-in-law.
Walsh collaborated with country music songwriter Tommy Lee James after the two of them had a conversation about the Titanic.
"Too many icebergs out on the ocean
Too many chances to sink like a stone
The great titanic about to go under
And the band played on..."
The lyrics contain some "social commentary" as Walsh puts it, "It seems to me like we're standing around like ostriches with our heads in the sand, pretending that nothing is wrong, pretending that things are going to get better, or somebody somewhere is going to fix everything".
9. In "Titanic: The Musical" there is a Prologue called "The Launching" that consists of seven songs including a fan favorite, "Godspeed Titanic." Which two songs are NOT among the other six songs in that pre-iceberg Act I Prologue?

Answer: "To The Lifeboats" and "The Foundering"

In the 1997 Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, the Titanic doesn't strike the iceberg until the very end of Act I. After that happens "Entr'acte" is an instrumental passage played by the orchestra serving as an interlude before the book resumes the storytelling. And when Act II does begin, the stewards are scrambling to wake up the passengers, and a few songs later the company is singing "To The Lifeboats." A foundering is a nautical term for when a ship is filling with water and then sinking. And the song "The Foundering" is another obviously post-iceberg song.
10. 1997: The movie "Titanic" captivates the world with its depiction of the tragedy. As the ship's deck succumbs to the Atlantic, the violinist doesn't give up playing. A bandmate turns to look back at him and decides, yes, he too will go back and join him as the whole band resumes. What song do they play?

Answer: Nearer, My God, to Thee

All those songs are in the movie "Titanic" that is, the 1953 movie "Titanic" starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, and Robert Wagner, not the James Cameron "Titanic." Of those, only "Nearer, My God, to Thee" is in 1997's "Titanic" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and that is the song the band plays as the ship is sinking. The Titanic's band was the Wallace Hartley band and history tells us of their noble heroism-playing music to calm the passengers as they boarded lifeboats.

They continued playing until the very end. None of the band survived. "Nearer My God, To Thee" is said to be what they actually played but no one can be sure. Two weeks after the Titanic sunk, Hartley's body was recovered, found "fully dressed with his music case strapped to his body." The modern day chamber ensemble I Salonisti portrayed the band in the movie.
