Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh, I've had it up to here."

Answer: Just a Girl

Though "Tragic Kingdom" was No Doubt's third album it was the one that allowed the ska punk band to hit the mainstream with their first certified hits. "Just a Girl" was their first to chart in both the U.S. (at number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100) and the UK (at number three on the UK Singles Chart).

The track would end up going platinum in the U.S. and Australia and help "Tragic Kingdom" top the US Billboard 200 and the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. The music video for this song would help establish the band's aesthetic for more than two decades.
2. "I'm just sippin' on chamomile."

Answer: Hey Baby

Inspired by the sounds and beats of Jamaican dance hall that would permeate through the entirety of the band's 2001 "Rock Steady" album, "Hey Baby" ended up being the first major single from the disc, catapulting the band to massive pop-rock success despite the underwhelming reception of "Return of Saturn". Featuring Jamaican artist Bounty Killer, the track would result in a Grammy for the band (specifically Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal)-- their first after seven prior nominations. "Hey Baby" would hit number two on the UK Singles Chart and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 (going gold there).
3. "The waves keep on crashin' on me for some reason."

Answer: Hella Good

The single released just after "Rock Steady" hit the shelves, "Hella Good" maintained No Doubt's success into 2003, bringing them onto four Billboard charts in the U.S., to number twelve on the UK Singles Chart, and eventually to the top of the US Dance Club Songs chart (with the Roger Sanchez Remix, which also won a Grammy award).

The song ended up helping popularize the word 'hella' during the early 2000s; while it was originally a slang word used in San Francisco, the worldwide popularity of "Hella Good" (and No Doubt at that time) made it hella international.

Interestingly, the song was cowritten by Pharrell Williams.
4. "Oh, I'd tell myself: what good do you do?"

Answer: It's My Life

With a decade of hits behind them, No Doubt released a Greatest Hits album, "The Singles 1992-2003", at the end of 2003 and included one previously unreleased track. "It's My Life", a cover of the 1984 Talk Talk song of the same name, became the only new single from this collection.

It ended up being a hit, netting the band another Grammy Award nomination (after having won the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals award the previous two years in a row). The track appeared on seven U.S. Billboard charts, peaking at number ten on the Hot 100 and going platinum.
5. "Leave a message and I'll call you back."

Answer: Spiderwebs

Although "Spiderwebs" failed to top the charts in any country, the track released in late 1995 and still managed to take the alternative airwaves by storm, becoming one of No Doubt's most famous hits despite. All this being said, "Spiderwebs" peaked at number sixteen on the UK Singles Chart and showed on four different U.S. Billboard charts, eventually going platinum there.

The music video for this track, set at a wedding, was directed by Marcus Nispel who would go on to do the "Spice Up Your Life" video for the Spice Girls and proceed to have a career in Hollywood, directing the 2009 "Friday the 13th" remake.
6. "I should have thought of that before we kissed."

Answer: Ex-Girlfriend

Coming off the massive success of "Tragic Kingdom", No Doubt released the "Return of Saturn" album in 2000 and led with the upbeat "Ex-Girlfriend" as their first single. Though the track hit number two on the Billboard US Alternative Airplay chart it didn't manage to crack the top ten in most other regions, a trend for the album's other singles due to its lack of cohesion with the popular sound of the time (pop groups). "Return to Saturn" would still end up nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album though it would lose to Foo Fighters' "There Is Nothing Left to Lose".
7. "You sure have changed since yesterday without any warning."

Answer: Sunday Morning

The fifth of seven singles from the "Tragic Kingdom" album, "Sunday Morning" was the last from the disc to achieve international chart success, appearing on the lists in the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (though only cracking the top ten in Iceland). Time was better to this track than a lot of the deeper cuts in the No Doubt discography; eventually it made it to the band's Greatest Hits album in late 2003.

They would keep it as a concert staple throughout most of their tours.
8. "Share a toothbrush, you're my kind of man."

Answer: Bathwater

The fourth and final track to be selected as a single from the "Return of Saturn" album, "Bathwater" wasn't highly regarded and failed to make a dent on any international charts (it peaked at number thirty-nine on the Billboard US Adult Top 40). What it allowed the band to do, however, was push hard into their fifth full album, "Rock Steady", and they did that with gusto, releasing "Hey Baby" as a single less than a year after "Bathwater".
9. "Don't tell me 'cause it hurts."

Answer: Don't Speak

The third single pushed out from "Tragic Kingdom", "Don't Speak" was one of No Doubt's signature tracks and it managed to hold their first Grammy nominations. Unlike the band's general radio hits, "Don't Speak" gave them a hearty power ballad and, fortunately, it hit the spot, allowing them to reach number one on three different U.S. Billboard charts (of seven it appeared on), the top of the UK Singles Chart, and number one in Canada and Australia. Sophie Muller, who directed this track's music video, would go on to film a dozen No Doubt videos and more than a dozen more for Gwen's solo career.
10. "I'm trying to get a hold on this."

Answer: Settle Down

Following the band's fifth studio album and Greatest Hits compilation, No Doubt went on a nearly ten year hiatus, finally releasing new music in 2012 with their sixth album, "Push and Shove". Their only charting single from the release, "Settle Down", topped out at number thirty-four on the Billboard Hot 100 and saw slots on four other U.S. charts. Though upbeat and well-received, the song wasn't enough to support the album's longevity.

The disc reached number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 and then quickly vanished from the charts. No Doubt would end up on a second hiatus and Gwen Stefani would return to solo ventures.
