Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tragic Kingdom" was one of the biggest albums of the 1990s. It's known for its deep and thoughtful songs and catchy melodies. How many singles, both commercial and non-commercial, were released world-wide off the album?

Answer: Seven

"Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", "Don't Speak", "Sunday Morning", "Excuse Me Mr.", "Happy Now?", and "Hey You!" were all released as world-wide singles off the highly acclaimed No Doubt album. "Happy Now?" was the only song that failed to chart anywhere and "Hey You!" only charted in New Zealand.

"Tragic Kingdom" was released in 1995.
2. "Tragic Kingdom" was No Doubt's second album.

Answer: False

"Tragic Kingdom" was the third studio album released by the band. They released an eponymous debut album in 1992 and "The Beacon Street Collection" in 1995. "The Beacon Street Collection" was made in response to bitter tensions between the band and its record label, Interscope (a subdivision of Trauma Records). The second album was made independently by No Doubt in a homemade studio.
3. Who wrote the closing song "Tragic Kingdom" off the album of the same name?

Answer: Eric Stefani

Eric Stefani is Gwen Stefani's older brother who started the band No Doubt in 1986 with her and John Spence. He left the band because of creative control differences and went on to pursue a career as an animator for the hit television cartoon "The Simpsons". Before he left, however, Eric wrote the epic piece "Tragic Kingdom" and "The Climb" by himself.

He co-wrote the songs "Different People", "Sunday Morning", "Don't Speak", "You Can Do It", and "End It on This".
4. Tragic Kingdom is a nickname most associated with which theme park?

Answer: Disneyland

The band was inspired to use them name "Tragic Kingdom" after guitarist Tom Dumont's seventh grade teacher's nickname for the theme park Disneyland. Disneyland, the famed (and my second favorite) theme park was commonly nicknamed this because of the negative image Michael Eisner gave the world-famous Disney franchise in the 90s.
5. "Don't Speak" was the most successful single off the album "Tragic Kingdom" and soon became one of No Doubt's signature songs. How many weeks did the song stay on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart?

Answer: Sixteen

"Don't Speak" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and stayed on for sixteen weeks. It was a record at the time before the Goo Goo Doll's hit song "Iris" stayed on the chart for eighteen weeks. "Don't Speak", despite its popularity, never reached the charts on Billboard's Hot 100 because it was not issued as a commercial single (rules during the time required commercial singles for charting). Billboard Hot 100 Airplay measures radio airplay, or how much the song is played on the radio. This chart is not based on sales.

The song is a famous ballad about the breakup between singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal. Many songs off the album "Tragic Kingdom" were written about the two's breakup, but this is perhaps the most famous of them all.
6. Which song from the album were these lines taken out of: "Idealistic will so hard to please; Put your indecisive mind at ease"?

Answer: Happy Now?

"Happy Now?" was written by Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, and Tony Kanal. It tells the tale of a girl moving on from a past relationship. Many people believe this was written as a reaction from Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal breaking up.
7. Which song from the album were these lines taken out of: "You're on the other side of the mirror; So nothing's looking quite as clear"?

Answer: Sunday Morning

"Sunday Morning" is an upbeat tune that hit number 35 on the U.S. Billboard Charts. The song's lyrics come from a fight between Tony Kanal and Gwen Stefani about their breakup, a recurring theme in "Tragic Kingdom". This is my favorite song off the album.
8. Which song from the album were these lines taken out of: "You didn't dare look over; 'Cause you've been too small"?

Answer: Sixteen

"Sixteen" is a lesser-known song of "Tragic Kingdom". It was written by Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal. Funny enough, this is one of the few songs that didn't seem to be related to the breakup of the two band members.
9. "Tragic Kingdom" is No Doubt's signature album, and it rose them to stardom. However, the album initially performed poorly when it was released in early October, 1995. When did the album first chart the Billboard 200?

Answer: January 1996

In December 1996, nearly a year after the album first appeared on the Billboard 200, it reached number one and stayed there for nine non-consecutive weeks.
10. What one-hit wonder artist produced "Tragic Kingdom"?

Answer: Matthew Wilder

Matthew Wilder, who had a top five hit "Break My Stride" in 1983, produced the famous album "Tragic Kingdom".

No Doubt has been an influential part of the ska revival of the 1990s. "Tragic Kingdom" launched them into stardom and was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the decade. Rolling Stone ranked the album 441 on the magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Thanks for playing the quiz!
