Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song was featured in 2 separate movies 10 years apart by two very different singers. The composer of this song performed the original which didn't quite make the top 40, while the second release became one of the biggest hit singles of the Rock era. What song am I talking about?

Answer: I Will Always Love You

Dolly Parton wrote and performed the original; the first time as a country hit in 1974, and again in 1982, this time from "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas". Whitney Houston took it to number 1 for 14 weeks in 1992 from the soundtrack of "The Bodyguard". Oddly enough, both performers were also the stars of their respective movie.
2. Originally done in the rock era by Elvis Presley in 1956 who took it to number 55, this popular children's piano duet hit number 1 for 3 weeks when the Marcels remade it in 1961.

Answer: Blue Moon

Remember this one on the piano? It took Do-wop to make it a number 1 hit.
3. First written in 1928 as "Theme From The Three Penny Opera", this song charted a total of 8 times between 1956 and 1960 by such artists as Lawrence Welk, Louis Armstrong, Les Paul, and Billy Vaughn, among others. Bobby Darin was the seventh person to release this single and the only one to take it to number 1.

Answer: Mack The Knife

There were 6 releases of this song in 1956. Bobby Darin took it to number one (finally someone had to do it I guess) for 9 weeks three years later in 1959. As if that wasn't enough, Ella Fitzgerald made it her only top 40 single in the rock era the following year and that pretty much killed it. I'm surprised some rapper hasn't got a hold of this one yet....finder's fee?
4. Elton John outdid himself on this one--his first release in the 1970's made it to number 2, but he topped himself with a little help from a friend (a duet)and took his own remade song to number 1.

Answer: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me

George Michael helped Elton John remake his own song. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was number 1 on it's first release also as a duet with Kiki Dee. Elton also remade this one with RuPaul and it made it to a whopping number 92 in 1994. As for "Candle In The Wind", see the next question (It was never a duet).
5. Elton John once again topped himself with the biggest selling single of all time world-wide. The first release was on a studio LP in 1973, but never released as a single until he did a live version in 1987 which made it to number 6. The original version was a dedication to a famous woman, and the lyrics were re-written in 1997 as a dedication to another famous lady, topping the charts for 14 weeks. What is the song?

Answer: Candle In The Wind 1997

Although the title and lyrics were changed, it's still considered a remake.
6. This song is the only one in the history of the rock era where the original version hit the number one spot, fell off the charts only to re-enter the charts again and return to number one.

Answer: The Twist

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was a number 1 hit for The Tokens in 1961, and Robert John took it to number 3 in 1972. The Tokens got the last laugh, however, as the original version was featured in "The Lion King" and recharted modestly at number 51 in 1994. "Yesterday" by the Beatles was, the last time I looked at Guinness anyways, the song with the most recorded versions, although the Beatles only released it once.

The Four Seasons took their number 1 hit from 1976 and recharted in 1994, hitting number 14, although it was a re-mix, not the exact original.
7. This song was performed by the original artist Air Supply back in 1985. It has been redone at least 3 times since, each version charting a little higher until Celine Dion finally topped the charts with it.

Answer: The Power Of Love

Air Supply's version was "The Power Of Love (You Are My Lady)". Others who have remade this classic are Jennifer Rush and Laura Branigan.
8. The first person/group to do this song was Tommy James and The Shondells in 1967 (number 4), next were The Rubinoos in 1977 (number 45) and finally 10 years later, someone took this song to number 1, and it has been laid to rest ever since.

Answer: I Think We're Alone Now

Yep, it's Tiffany. "I Think I Love You", originally by the Partidge Family, was recently redone by David Cassidy's daughter, and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind)" was redone by New Kids On The Block, but charted at number 8. "Crimson and Clover" was redone by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts as a follow-up to "I Love Rock And Roll" in 1982 and peaked at number 7.
9. The first release of this song was in 1967, when Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell took it to number 19. One of the cornerstones of Motown took it to number 1 after going solo. What is the song?

Answer: Ain't No Mountain High Enough

Diana Ross's first solo number 1 after the Supremes.
10. In 1968, a song entitled "Indian Reservation" was released by Don Fardon and reached number 20. It was redone in 1971 and hit number 1. Who was the artist?

Answer: Raiders

Raiders a.k.a. Paul Revere and the Raiders, although by this time, it was shortened to just "Raiders".
11. This song was written for Laura Branigan, who took it to number 12 in 1983. About 7 years later, the songwriter remade this song and took it to number 1.

Answer: How Am I Supposed To Live Without You

Michael Bolton wrote "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" and "I Found Someone" for Laura Branigan. This was one of two songs that Laura did that someone else remade later and took to number 1 ("Power Of Love" was the other one), while she never had a number 1 hit. Poor Laura.
12. This group's only single first charted in 1983, peaking at number 61. In 1988, long after the group broke up, it recharted, going on to hit number 1.

Answer: When I'm With You

"When I'm With You" was Sheriff's only hit. Two of the members from Sheriff went on the form "Alias", which recorded "More Than I Can Say".
13. Elvis first recorded this song which hit number 2 in 1962, and in 1993, a reggae group took this song to number 1 for 7 weeks.

Answer: Can't Help Falling In Love

UB40 remade a reggae version of this song which was included in the movie "Sliver".
14. This song was first written and recorded by Neil Diamond in 1968, and was remade by a reggae group in 1984 and reached number 34. This same group remade the song again in 1988, this time hitting number 1.

Answer: Red Red Wine

UB40 again. Another trivia tidbit: UB40 is a British unemployment form.
15. Another case of a re-release; this song originally charted in 1981 reaching number 79, and because of its inclusion in the sitcom "Family Ties", it recharted in 1986, hitting number 1.

Answer: At This Moment

Billy Vera and The Beaters recorded this single in 1981, but it became popular in 1986 after it was featured in "Family Ties".
