Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul Revere and the Raiders charted many hits in the sixties and were the house band on the television show "Where the Action Is". In the seventies they changed their name to The Raiders and had their only Number One hit. Which song reached Number One for the band in the US for one week in 1971?

Answer: Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian)

Organist Paul Revere Dick formed an instrumental group in his native Boise in the mid-fifties. He met singer Mark Lindsay and formed Paul Revere and the Raiders. They performed at teen dances and struggled until they emulated the British Invasion bands and began charting songs of their own. By 1967 they were the biggest-selling rock band for Columbia Records.

After changing their name to the Raiders they covered a John Loudermilk composition titled "Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian)". Paul Revere embarked on an exhaustive promotion tour of the record.

His efforts paid off when the song became their one and only Number One record. "Hungry" reached number six in '66. "Kicks" topped at number four the same year. "Good Thing" was another 1966 number four hit for the band.
2. A Canadian band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Guess Who took the US by storm in the late sixties and early seventies when they charted several classics. Which of their many hits was the only one to hit the top of the US charts?

Answer: American Woman

"American Woman" was the lead single from the band's 1970 album of the same name. The single spent three weeks at the top of the US Billboard charts the same year. The other side of the 45RPM single was "No Sugar Tonight" and reached number 39 on its own merit.

When "American Woman" reached the top spot it had the distinction of being the first number one on the US Billboard chart by a Canadian band. The band was known as Chad Allan and the Reflections before assuming the name Guess Who. "Shakin' All Over" was their first song to hit the US charts, reaching number 22 in 1965. "No Time" hit number five in 1970 three months before "American Woman" reached the top spot. "These Eyes" hit number six in '69.
3. The Lovin' Spoonful represented the US respectfully during the British Invasion era and charted many catchy single hits. Which of their many hits made it to the pinnacle of the US charts?

Answer: Summer in the City

"Summer in the City" reached the number one spot on August 13, 1966. The Lovin' Spoonful was formed when John Sebastian got together with bass player Steve Boone, guitar player Zal Yanovsky and drummer Joe Butler. The genesis of "Summer in the City" came from a poetic piece that John Sebastian's brother Mark wrote for a magazine. Steve Boone adapted the lyrics and developed a driving arrangement for the song then overdubbed sound effects such as auto horns and a jackhammer during the electric piano interlude.

The band still occasionally tours but John Sebastian has declined to perform with the band since their appearance gig together in 1980. In 1965 "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" reached number ten and "Do You Believe In Magic" reached number nine. "Daydream" hit number two the following year.
4. The legendary band Pink Floyd has been placing memorable albums on the charts since 1967. Which Pink Floyd single was the only one to reach number one on the US Billboard charts?

Answer: Another Brick in the Wall, Part II

"Another Brick in the Wall, Part II" hit the number one spot on the US Billboard singles chart as well as in several other countries in 1979. The song was from the November 30, 1979, album release "The Wall". Band member Roger Waters has sole songwriting credits on the tune.

The song was nominated for a Grammy but lost to "Against the Wind" by Bob Seger. The choir from the Islington Green School is heard on the track. The song was banned in South Africa because of its obvious objection to the rigors of boarding schools. "Money" was a single from the "Dark Side of the Moon" LP and reached number 13 in 1973. "Wish You Were Here" was a 1975 single release that didn't chart on the US singles chart. "Learning to Fly" reached number 70 in 1987.
5. The Boston band Aerosmith has had over 20 songs chart in the Top Forty since they formed in 1970. Only one of their singles reached the top spot on the US charts. Which Aerosmith song featured on a movie soundtrack has that distinction?

Answer: I Don't Want to Miss A Thing

"I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" was not only the band's first number one song in 28 years, it was their only song to debut at number one. The single stayed at the top of the charts for four weeks. Songwriter Diane Warren related in her 2004 album, "Diane Warren Presents Love Songs", that she had composed the song with Celine Dion in mind. Simon Cowell of "American Idol" (2002) fame stated on one episode of the show that he had a very high opinion of the song.

Although "Sweet Emotion" is still a staple of rock radio, it only reached number 38 on the charts when it was released in 1975. "Walk This Way" made it to number ten in 1977 and the vocal epic "Dream On" peaked at number six the previous year.
6. David Gates assembled a band with other session players in the late sixties called Bread. They became synonymous with soft rock and charted many hits. Which was their only US Number One hit?

Answer: Make it With You

On June 30, 1970, the band's first single to actually make the charts, "Make It with You", made it to Number One. David Gates wrote and produced the song. The band's first single release, "Dismal Day", was released the previous year and did not chart.

Their first album was titled "Bread" and rose to number 127 on the album charts in 1969. When the 1970 LP "On the Waters" was released and "Make It with You" was selected as the lead single the album rose to number 12. In 1972 their third album, "Baby I'm-a Want You" rose to the number three position, the highest position of any Bread LP. "Everything I Own" briefly anchored the number five spot in 1972. "Baby I'm-a Want You" was number three the previous year and "If" was a number four song in 1971.
7. When The Guess Who decided to part company member Randy Bachman became a founding member of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and charted several rock classics. Which of their many songs was the only on to reach Number One in the US?

Answer: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet

"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" was written by Randy Bachman and ended up as a release from their 1974 album "Not Fragile". Randy did not originally intend for the song to be anything other than a recording for his brother Gary who stuttered. When "Not Fragile" was wrapping production one of the Mercury Records producers expressed concern that the album didn't contain any radio-friendly songs. Randy suggested "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", but thought he should record another vocal track without the stuttering.

After several takes he realized the song needed to remain the way is was originally sung. It became their only Number One. "Takin' Care of Business" was a 1974 number five hit. "Let It Ride" rose to be a number 23 song and "Roll on Down the Highway" was number 14 the same year.
8. The Mamas and the Papas were formed in the sixties when members of other folk bands united and forged a strong harmony. They had a string of hits but only one of them made it to the apex of the US charts. Which Mamas and Papas single is their only US Number One hit?

Answer: Monday, Monday

In addition to being the band's first and only Number One hit, "Monday, Monday" is also the first US Number One song by a male-female integrated pop band. In 1967 the band received a Grammy for the John Phillips composition. Denny Doherty sang lead on the song and related on the VH1 series "Behind the Music" (1997) that he believed nobody would buy a song that was simply about a day of the week.

The band was originally called The Magic Circle and changed their name just before signing a record deal with Dunhill records. "Words of Love" and "I Saw Her Again" were both 1966 number five hits. "California Dreamin'" was released in 1965 before the 1966 release "Monday, Monday" but only made it to number four.
9. The Police formed as a power trio in the late seventies and charted several number one songs on the UK charts. Which of their hits was the only one to make it to the number one spot in the US?

Answer: Every Breath You Take

"Every Breath You Take" was written by Sting and topped the US charts for eight weeks in 1983. The song is from their "Synchronicity" album released the same year. Sting composed the song during the time his marriage was in a state of collapse. In his 2007 memoir book, "One Train Later", Sting relates the song was done in one take. "Roxanne" was the band's breakthrough hit in the US but only made it to number 32 in 1979. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" rose to number three on the US charts in 1981. "Wrapped Around Your Finger" topped out at number eight in 1983.
10. Swedish sensation ABBA was all over the international charts in the seventies. Which was their only hit to place at the top of the US charts?

Answer: Dancing Queen

In 1976 "Dancing Queen" was ABBA's only top song in the US. It also reached the top in over a dozen countries. The song came on the heels of the number 13 "Fernando", released earlier in the same year. "Dancing Queen" rode to success as part of the Disco craze. Each member of ABBA had achieved success and respect in the music business before they blended their voices and became ABBA.

After placing third in the 1973 Eurovision contest the band bounced back the following year and won with "Waterloo".

This exposure catapulted the group to international fame and they toured Europe and Australia. In 1979 they began their only North American tour in Edmonton, Canada. Their final performance together was in early 1986. "SOS" charted a respectable number 15 in 1975. "Waterloo" made it to number six in 1974 and "Mamma Mia" clocked in at number 32 in 1975 .
