Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rock band Blind Melon's second album "Soup" included the song "Skinned". The song was based upon an infamous killer who was also the inspiration for the fictitious movie murderers Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill. Who was this well-known killer?

Answer: Ed Gein

Prior to writing the song, Shannon Hoon, the late frontman of Blind Melon, read a book about serial killers that included Gein. It was the inspiration behind the song.

Gein was also the inspiration for other films such as "Motel Hell", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and "House of 1000 Corpses".
2. "The Ripper" was a song based upon the notorious works of Jack the Ripper, a killer in London during the late nineteenth century. Which British heavy metal band is credited as the creator of this song?

Answer: Judas Priest

"The Ripper" originally appeared on the album "Sad Wings of Destiny" in 1976.

Jack the Ripper killed prostitutes in the Whitechapel District of Victorian-era London. The case of Jack the Ripper is an unsolved one that expert and amateur investigators alike have been attempting to crack for over 100 years.
3. Australian metal band The Berzerker has a song entitled "Forever". It was made public on the band's self-titled album released in 2000. What is the name of the serial killer who was responsible for the band's writing of this song?

Answer: Edmund Kemper

There were once rumors circling that the drummer of the band had broken the Guinness World Record for being the fastest drummer, but the rumors proved to be false claims made by internet users.

According to a statement made by Kemper, he often fantasized about murdering his mother and grandmother. He considered both of them to have mistreated him. Samples from his testimony are included in the song.
4. Which killing duo was the song "Suffer Little Children" by British band The Smiths about?

Answer: Ian Brady and Myra Hindley

Steven Morrissey, the frontman of The Smiths, along with the rest of the band, grew up in and around Manchester (where the murders occurred) and had no more than just a few years of age difference between themselves and the victims.

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley are known as the Moors Murderers. They were active from 1963 to 1965 in the Greater Manchester area of England. Hindley and Brady's trial was one of the grandest and most publicized of its time.
5. Ed Gein was the inspiration for another song by a thrash metal group. The name of the song was entitled "Dead Skin Mask". It was released on the group's fifth album, "Seasons in the Abyss". Which band was behind "Dead Skin Mask"?

Answer: Slayer

Slayer was a band formed in 1982. Some of the recurring themes in their music are warfare, violence, anti-religion, and death.

Gein thought of his mother as a roundabout saint. She was a very religious woman, constantly warning Gein of the sins of premarital intercourse, and women in general.
6. Slayer was also behind another song motivated by a different murderer. This song was simply called "213". It was named for the apartment number where this particular serial killer committed most of his seventeen murders of young homosexual males.

Answer: Jeffrey Dahmer

The song appears on the album "Divine Intervention". Kerry King, Slayer's guitarist, has an interest in the topic of serial killers.

Dahmer was also known as The Milwaukee Cannibal. He baited his victims to his apartment by offering alcohol, sex, or money. Dahmer then placed sleeping pills in their beers before strangling them in their sleep.
7. System of a Down also has a song inspired by the notorious labors of Edmund Kemper. What was the name of their ode to this serial killer who was known for beheading women?

Answer: Forever

The band was formed in 1995 in Glendale, California. While all the affiliates of the band are of American descent, they are the grandchildren of Armenian Genocide survivors.

Like many serial killers, Kemper had a nickname. The Co-Ed Killer. He murdered ten victims, three of whom were members of his family (his mother and his paternal grandparents).
8. "L.D. 50" was the first album released by American hardcore band Mudvayne in 2000. One of the tracks on that album was inspired by necrophiliac killer Ed Gein. What was the name of this song?

Answer: Nothing to Gein

"L.D. 50" stands for Lethal Dose 50. It's a scientific term meaning the time when 50 of 100 test subjects will perish during an experiment. Kud, the band's frontman, has claimed that the song is not about a serial killer, but a necrophiliac cannibal.

Gein attacked his final victim, Bernice Worden, in a shop. He was seen by the victim's son, who told the police. Upon going to Gein's farm, they found the headless body of Worden. When arrested, he came clean straight away.
9. Contained in the album "Let it Bleed", which song written by The Rolling Stones was based upon the confessions of Albert De Salvo, the alleged Boston Strangler?

Answer: Midnight Rambler

While performing this song on stage, Mick Jagger typically took on the role of the killer, while fans screamed as if being attacked.

De Salvo confessed to the crimes, but there remains to this day no physical evidence that he actually committed any of them. He was murdered in Walpole State Prison in November of 1973 by being stabbed through the heart by someone who was never caught.
10. There's another song about Edmund Kemper entitled "Killfornia". Which American band was behind this song?

Answer: Church of Misery

Church of Misery was formed in 1992 in Bloomington, Illinois. They later changed their name to Insomnia so as not to be confused with a popular Japanese band of the same name.

Kemper killed from the age of 15 to the age of 24. He's one of the serial killers known for taking trophies from his victims: IDs, personal photos, clothes, and a hairbrush (not to mention their heads).
