Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favorite is the first track, "Barry's Boys," a shot at the followers of the 1964 Republican Presidential nominee. Name the group and album which also includes "The First Time Ever" and "The Sinking of the Reuben James."

Answer: The Chad Mitchell Trio, "Reflecting"

Some might say another song on the album, "What Did You Learn in School Today," has never lost its relevance. The album also includes "Stewball," "The Hip Song (It Does Not Pay to be Hip)," and "Tell Old Bill." This version of the trio included Chad Mitchell, Mike Kobluk, and Joe Frazier.
2. The title of my next album includes the group's name, which I am asking you to identify. It is "(Group's Name) Sing of Our Times" and includes songs like "Beans Taste Fine," "Take This Hammer," and "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos (Deportees)" on Side Two. Side One includes "Seven Daffodils" and "The Spring Hill Mine Disaster." Name the group.

Answer: The Brothers Four

Also released in 1964, this album featured the original quartet of John Paine, Bob Flick, Mike Kirkland, and Dick Foley, who were fraternity brothers at the University of Washington. This was their tenth album. Their second single, and biggest hit, was "Greenfields," released in 1960.
3. Again, released in 1964, the title track of this album begins, "I can hear the soft breathing of the girl that I love,/ As she lies here beside me asleep with the night..." Who recorded this album which also included songs like "Benedictus," "Bleeker Street," "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream," and "He Was My Brother," not to mention the title track, "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." and the final track on Side One, "The Sounds of Silence"?

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel

Garfunkel wrote the liner notes in which he said, "The Sounds of Silence is a major work. We were looking for a song on a larger scale, but this was more than either of us expected."
4. Although admittedly not from the Sixties, the next album claimed to be "The Record That Launched the Folk Renaissance," and referred to itself as "the Legendary Carnegie Hall Concert." So what group was recorded at this concert on Christmas Eve of 1955 with songs like "Darling Corey," "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," "Greensleeves," "Sixteen Tons," "Goodnight Irene," "Wimoweh," and "Rock Island Line"?

Answer: The Weavers

Formed in 1948, the original Weavers included Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, and Fred Hellerman. But the group broke up when Seeger and Hays were falsely denounced as members of the Communist Party. The group reunited for the Carnegie Hall concert. On the album notes is a quotation by Carl Sandburg including the words, "When I hear America singing, the Weavers are there."
5. This group's big hit was "Guantanamera," which was the first track on their 1966 album titled "Spanish Album." Other songs included were "La Bamba," "Michelle," "Y La Quiero" ("And I Love Her"), "Ayer" ("Yesterday"), and "Ojos Espanoles" ("Spanish Eyes"), not to mention "Louie, Louie." Who is this group, who was often also classified as "Easy Listening"?

Answer: The Sandpipers

Released in 1969, the "Spanish Album" was compiled mostly of songs previously released on earlier albums, with several being translated into Spanish. Originally calling themselves The Four Seasons, the original trio of Jim Brady, Mike Piano, and Richard Schoff changed the name to The Grads since there was already a group by that name.

They then adopted the name The Sandpipers, although there was also already a group with that name.
6. Album number six on our quiz was released in 1963. Founded by Randy Sparks in 1961 as a group of 14, by the release of the album entitled "Ramblin'," the group had only ten singers and featured the voice of Barry McGuire. Who recorded this record with such hits as "Green, Green," "Hi Jolly," "The Drinking Gourd," "Rovin' Gambler," "Down the Ohio," "Last Farewell," and the title song?

Answer: The New Christy Minstrels

Through the years, the New Christy Minstrels have included "nearly 300 members," according to Wikipedia. Alumni have included Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, actress Karen Black, and two cofounders of the First Edition along with Rogers in Thelma Camacho and Terry Williams.
7. I can only find one album of mine by this group, and it is "The Best Of...., Vol. III" So here are some of their third-tier best songs: "Hangman," "500 Miles," "Lemon Tree," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "This Land is Your Land." hint: appearing on "Best of..., Volume I," no doubt, were "Tom Dooley" and "M.T.A."

Answer: The Kingston Trio

8. OK, here's a little twist. The album is "Violets of Dawn" by the Mitchell Trio, released in 1965. Two tracks include the title song and "Your Friendly, Liberal, Neighborhood Ku Klux Klan." Can you identify which of the following pairs of songs is also on this album?

Answer: "Bells of Rhymney" and "The Sound of Protest (Has Begun to Pay)"

The Mitchell Trio came about when John Denver replaced Chad Mitchell in 1965. "Aquarius" and "Walking in Space" were from the rock opera "Hair." "Greenback Dollar" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" were hits by the Kingston Trio, and "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" were hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Ironically, "Jet Plane," PPM's only number one hit, was written by John Denver.
9. OK, name the group whose "Greatest Hits" album was released in 1962. Among these hits were "The Green Leaves of Summer," "Eddystone Light," "Nobody Knows," "My Tani," "Frogg," and "Blue Water Line."
