1. "Heat Wave'

Answer: Holland-Dozier-Holland

Lamont Dozier teamed up with brothers Brian and Eddie Holland in the early 1960s. Along with the likes of Smokey Robinson, Barry Gordy and Stevie Wonder, Holland-Dozier-Holland were some of the main songwriters associated with the "Motown Sound" of the early to mid 1960s. They wrote 25 number one hits as well as many charting tracks for the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and many others. Among their best known hits are "Stop in the Name of Love", "Baby Love", "Heat Wave", and "Jimmy Mack".

Holland-Dozier-Holland broke up in 1973 when Dozier left to pursue a solo career.

Martha and the Vandellas' version of "Heat Wave" was certainly hot enough -- it rose to number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B chart and peaked at number four on the US Billboard hot 100.
2. "Where Did Our Love Go"

The Supremes took this song to Number One on the Billboard charts in 1964. It was the first of their dozen number ones.
3. "Baby I Need Your Loving"

Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby I Need Your Loving" was a hit for the Four Tops. The Detroit Symphony provided the string players for this 1964 release.
4. "Jimmy Mack"

Martha and the Vandellas, who were also known as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, released this single in 1967.
5. "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)"

Though Kim Weston first released this single in 1965, it's probably better known for the version which the Doobie Brothers put out in 1975. That version reached number 11 on the USA Billboard Hot 100.
6. "Bye Bye Love"

Husband and wife team Felice and Boudleaux Bryant started writing together in the late 1940s. Their first hit was "Country Boy" which reached number seven on the country charts in 1948. They had a series of hits with the Everly brothers including "Wake up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Bye Bye Love". They continued writing songs until his death in 1987.

The Everly Brothers released "Bye Bye Love" in 1957. It reached number two on the US Billboard charts. Simon and Garfunkel, admitted fans of the Everlys, recorded a live version of "Bye Bye Love" which was released on their 1970 "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" album.
7. "Raining in My Heart"

Buddy Holley released this as the 'B' side of his "It Doesn't Matter Anymore". "Raining in My Heart" reached number 88 on the Billboard charts, and was included in Holley's "Greatest Hits" compilation.
8. "Sleepless Nights"

Another hit for the Everly Brothers, this song was also covered by Emmylou Harris, Peter and Gordon, and Elvis Costello, among others.
9. "Love Hurts"

Roy Orbison took this song to number five on the Australian charts in 1961. Others who recorded it include The Who and Nazareth, whose version reached the top ten in 1975.
10. "Wake Up Little Susie"

Another hit for the Everly Brothers, this was released in 1957 and reached number one on the Billboard pop chart. Simon and Garfunkel recorded it as part of their concert in Central Park, and their version reached number 27 in 1981.
11. "Hound Dog"

Answer: Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote several hits which were performed by Elvis Presley, including "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock". They also wrote for Ben E. King, The Coasters, The Clovers and Perry Como. Their songs were the basis of the 1995 Broadway musical, "Smokey Joe's Cafe", which won a Grammy for "Best Musical Show Album" in 1996.

Big Mama Thornton first recorded "Hound Dog" in 1952. Then Elvis took it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1956.
12. "Fools Fall in Love"

The Drifters recorded this Lieber and Stoller hit in 1957. Nine years later, Elvis recorded a version which did not reach the Billboard Hot 100.
13. "Yakety Yak"

This 1958 song was a US Billboard number one for the Coasters. Mike Stoller played piano on this recording.
14. "Love Potion #9"

Another somewhat offbeat song by Leiber and Stoller, this was recorded first by the Clovers then by the Searchers. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass recorded an instrumental version.
15. "Stand By Me"

Ben E. King teamed up with Leiber and Stoller on this 1961 single, which reached the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, and topped the US Billboard R&B chart.
16. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow"

By the time Gerry Goffin and Carole King were married in 1959, they were already an established songwriting team. King wrote the melodies while Goffin wrote the lyrics. The pair worked in New York's famous Brill Building along with many other songwriters. During their partnership together, Goffin and King wrote "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "The Loco-Motion", "Chains", "Up on the Roof", "I'm into Something Good", and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" for a diverse group of singers ranging from Aretha Franklin to The Monkees.

King and Goffin divorced by 1968, and Carole King went on to have an extremely successful solo career including the album "Tapestry" which stayed on the Billboard charts for over 300 weeks, second only to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" for the longest time on the charts.

The Shirelles' version of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (Which is sometimes called "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow") was a number one hit in 1960. Carole King released her version on her album "Tapestry".
17. "Chains"

Answer: Goffin and King

The Beatles recorded "Chains" for their album "Please Please Me" in 1963. It had already been released as a single by The Cookies the year before.
18. "Go Away Little Girl"

Answer: Goffin and King

"Go Away Little Girl" is one of only nine songs which have become Billboard Number One hits for two different artists, Steve Lawrence and Donny Osmond in this case.
19. "One Fine Day"

The Chiffons' version of "One Fine Day" was released in 1963. Seventeen years later, Carole King released her own version of the song which was a number 12 hit and her last top 40 hit single.
20. "I'm Into Something Good"

The Cookies member, Earl-Jean, released a version of this song in 1964. That same year, Herman's Hermits released their version which eclipsed Earl-Jean's and rose to number 13 on the charts.
