The Cold War Kids are a four piece band from California, America, who are known to tour extensively and put on a good live act. The band's name was suggested by the band's bassist, Matt Maust, after seeing statues that had been removed after the break up of the Soviet Union mingled together with playground equipment in a park during a trip to Eastern Europe.

They had a second song in the count that year with 'Hospital Beds' appearing at number thirty-seven; both songs are from their album 'Robbers and Cowards'.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are a lyrically poetic band who sing with raw emotion be it in their harder rock songs like 'From Her to Eternity' to their ballads like 'Into My Arms'. Gorillaz is a "virtual" band created by the very talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Damon Albarn and comic book artist and designer Jamie Hewlett. Although these two are the main creative forces behind the band, the diverse sound of Gorillaz is due in part to their many collaborations on songs with other musicians.

The band is considered a virtual one despite the music being created by real life people, because each of the band members is depicted as an animation with its own persona. The band member's names are: 2D (lead vocalist, keyboard, and melodica), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar and drum machine), Noodle (guitar, keyboard, and occasional vocals), Russel Hobbs (drums and percussion) and Del the ghost rapper (vocals). The persona of each band member is further established and explored via short cartoons, games, and videos on the band's website.

The song 'Clint Eastwood' is from their first self-titled album, and whilst it is not really about the actor it does allude to him in the chorus with the line "I've got sunshine in a bag". This line is from the movie 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' which Clint Eastwood starred in. Gorillaz also allude another song to Eastwood called 'Dirty Harry'.

They had another song in the Hottest 100 this year with '19-2000'.

The spine-tingling 'Pyramid Song' is from Radiohead's fifth album 'Amnesiac'. Radiohead were formed in 1985 in Oxfordshire, England. They are a five piece band who over the years have changed their sound markedly from more of alternative rock sound to an experimental electronic sound. The album 'Amnesiac', along with their previous album 'Kid A' marked this change to the electronic sound, but their poetic lyrics and fantastic live shows remained consistent throughout the change meaning that old fans readily embraced the new sound.

The band members are: Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwood (bass), Phil Selway (drums, percussion) and Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals).

The Waifs are a folk rock band which were formed in Albany, Western Australia in 1992. The band members are sisters, Donna and Vicki Simpson (now Thorn), Josh Cunningham, Ben Franz and David Ross MacDonald. 'London Still' is from their fourth album, 'Up All Night'.

They became popular quickly, and 'Are You Going to Be my Girl?' was featured in movies such as the animated 'Flushed Away' and 'What Happens in Vegas', but the song is probably most known for being associated with the ipod advertisements.

Jet had another song in the poll in 2003 called 'Rollover DJ', which was positioned at number 19. Both songs were off the band's first album, 'Get Born'.

The White Stripes were formed as a band informally at the marriage of its two members, Jack Gillis and Meg White, in 1996, with Gillis taking his wife's surname. Jack White had played in other bands, but Meg only started to play the drums in 1997. Nevertheless, by 1999 they had released their first self-titled album, and despite their marriage break-up continued as a band together. In 2003, they produced their fourth album 'Elephant' which has received many accolades.

The pulsing 'Seven Nation Army' which Jack White has said is his pronunciation of The Salvation Army as a child, wasn't the only song to be featured in the count that year. 'The Hardest Button to Button' was number fourteen, 'Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine' was number 89, the cover song 'I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself' was 93 and 'In The Cold, Cold Night' was 94. All of these were from the album 'Elephant'.

The wonderful Polly Jean Harvey is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from England. She, like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Radiohead and Tom Waits, has changed her sound markedly over the years since her first album release, 'Dry', in 1992. 'Dry' is passionate, low-fi alternative rock, and is strong with a dirty guitar sound. However by 2000, the album 'Stories from the City, Stories from Sea' was released with more of a melodic, almost pop feel and to my mind not one of her better albums. This was rectified with the release of her sixth and seventh albums, 'Uh Huh Her' and 'White Chalk' respectively, and for 'White Chalk' saw her ditch the guitars altogether and play piano.

She has long collaborated with John Parish (for over twenty years) who she calls her musical soulmate, Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey (no relation), Eric Drew Feldman and Flood, who has produced nearly ever single one of her albums.

Cut Copy are a four piece band that formed in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. Their catchy synth. driven indietronica has quickly gained them attention both in Australia and internationally. The band consists of Dan Whitford (vocals, keyboard and guitar), Tim Hoey (guitar and sampler), Ben Browning (bass guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums).

'Hearts on Fire' is from their second album, 'In Drowned Colours'.

Sparkadia are known for Alex Burnett's voice that has people wanting to "marry it" and their melodic songs. The band were formed in 2006 by Alex Burnett (vocals, guitar), Dave Hall (drums), Nick Rabone (bass) and Josephine Ayling (keyboards, guitar, vocals), but by 2009 all members, except for Alex Burnett, had left to either have a family or pursue other projects. Thus the band has become a solo project for Alex Burnett, and he subsequently released Sparkadia's second album in 2011. Sparkadia's touring group, however, does include one member from the original band, Dave Hall, along with Edwin "Eddie" Montgomery,Henry Eastham and Bluey May.

Ida Maria, full name Ida Maria Břrli Sivertsen, is a Norwegian musician. Her voice is big and energetic with a bluesy husk to it that has brought about collaborations with people like Iggy Pop and performances at the Glastonbury Festival.

She experiences chromesthesia which is a form of synesthesia that enables people to see sound as different colours. Ida Maria in relation to her music has said "as I've gotten older, I've seen that it has definitely been a bonus in terms of what I do. When I started to play guitar, I made this colour sheet for all the chords. I didn't know what they were called, but I knew exactly what colours and shades they were. So I made songs with colour palettes which was really cool". Classical composers Franz Liszt and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov also experienced chromesthesia, and would argue about the colour of music keys.

'I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked' is from her first album 'Fortress Round My Heart'.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were formed in New York City, America in 2000. The band is comprised of Karen O (vocals and piano), Brian Chase (drums) and Nick Zinner (guitar and keyboards), and they are known for their great live shows. The catchy, energetic pop-punk style of 'Zero' is representative of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs overall style, and it was named best track of the year by music magazines, NME and Spin, for 2009.

'Zero' is off their 'It's Blitz!' album, and the band had a second song in the poll with 'Heads will Roll' in position eleven.

The Hilltop Hoods came together as a band in 1991 in Adelaide, South Australia. The band members are Suffa (Matt Lambert), MC Pressure (Daniel Smith), and DJ Debris (Barry Francis). Hip Hop in Australia through the eighties and nineties was something that was a niche market with few artists performing and few record companies backing them, and thus the Hilltop Hoods' path to success was not an overnight one. It wasn't until 2001 that they started to get noticed by a wider audience, and in 2003 their album, 'The Calling', was played heavily on Triple J, subsequently leading to the album to go platinum in Australia.

They have continued their success with their next albums, including 'State of Art', which contains the song 'Chase That Feeling'.

Following their success, The Hilltop Hoods have given back to up and coming hip hop bands in Adelaide and the rest of Australia by establishing the Hilltop Hoods Initiative. This grant offers a mentorship with the Hilltop Hoods' former manager, and $10,000 to help them manufacture and distribute CDs.

Answer: Lonely Boy

The members of The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach (guitarist/vocalist)and Patrick Carney (drummer) knew each other as kids, but it wasn't until high school (in 1996) that they started playing music together. They subsequently recorded a demo in Carney's basement in 2001 and signed up to a small indie label. This start of lo-fi recordings and smaller independent labels is something that The Black Keys have continued to do with all of their albums, to the point that background noises can often be heard on their recordings. Something which seems to enhance their blues rock sound and feel, rather than detract from it.

Their band name comes from a friend called Alfred McMoore, a schizophrenic artist, who would leave messages calling those he did not trust or like "black keys".

The song 'Lonely Boy' is from their seventh album, 'El Camino'.

The Gossip are a three piece band that were formed in 1999 in Washington, America. Their sound is a mix of indie rock and pop-punk strengthened by Beth Ditto's powerful voice. The band members are Beth Ditto (vocals and piano), Nathan "Brace Paine" Howdeshell (guitar and bass) and Hannah Billie (drums).

Beth Ditto has also become known for her association with the designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, and for modeling in his show in Paris in 2011.

The song 'Heavy Cross' is from the band's fourth album 'Music For Men'.

Boy and Bear are another band that has been discovered via Triple J's 'Unearthed' program which promotes bands to send in demos. These songs are then placed on the 'Unearthed' website for people to listen to, read the band's biography and to subsequently rate the songs. The demos are also played on the radio station.

Boy and Bear are a five piece band with an indie folk-rock sound. Their members are Dave Hosking (vocals and guitar), Killian Gavin (vocals and guitar), Jake Tarasenko (bass guitar and vocals), Tim Hart (drums and vocals) and Jon Hart (banjo, mandolin and keyboards), and they were formed in 2009.


'Rabbit Song' is from their EP 'With Emperor Antarctica', and they did a wonderful cover of the Crowded House classic 'Fall At Your Feet', which polled in fifth spot on the count in 2010. This song was part of a tribute album to Crowded House.

Children Collide are a three piece band from Melbourne, Australia. Although, this was recently reduced to two members when their drummer, Ryan Caesar, quit in February, 2012. The other members of the band are Johnny Mackay (vocals and guitar) and Heath Crawley (bass).

Their first EP was released in 2005, but it wasn't until the release of 'The Long Now' in 2008 that they started to gain popularity. Their catchy sound of punk and alternative rock has seen them continue their success with the release of their second album 'Theory of Anything', on which the song 'Jellylegs' is a track.

Tool were formed in 1990 in California, America with Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones (guitar), Danny Carey (drums) and Justin Chancellor (bass) who replaced Paul D'Amour in 1995. Their songs are complex and powerful, and their sound has been described as progressive rock and art rock. An aspect that is evident in their particularly artistic video clips which have featured stop motion animation on a number of their tracks.

'Vicarious' is from their fourth album, '10,000 days', which was released in 2006. Their song 'The Pot', from the same album, polled at 29 on the count.

Answer: The Presets

The Presets are an electronic music duo that were formed in 1995 when members, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes, met at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They were both studying classical music at the time. They started in a band called Prop, also electronic, with three other members, but by 2003 Hamilton and Moyes had branched off to create a sound with "harder electronic edges". They called this incarnation of their band The Presets.

The song 'My People' is from their second album, 'Apocalypso', and a great and unusual cover of it was done by the Basement Birds. It was unusual in that it was a dance/electronic song covered as an acoustic guitar rock version when usually it is the other way round. This version further highlighted the catchy harmonies of the original song.

Florence Welch is the lead singer of Florence and the Machine, a band name established from the two founding members of the band. Welch started a band with Isabella "machine" Summers when they were teenagers calling themselves 'Florence Robot/Isa Machine'. However, this name was seen as too much of a mouthful, and was subsequently changed to Florence and the Machine. Summers shares the songwriting role with Welch, as well as contributing keyboards and backing vocals. The other members of the band are: Robert Ackroyd (guitar and backing vocals), Chris Hayden (drums, percussion and backing vocals), Mark Saunders (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Tom Monger (harp).

'Dog Days Are Over' was the highest rated song for the band in 2009, but they also had 'Rabbit Heart (Raise it up)' at number 44, 'Drumming Song' at number 45 and 'Kiss with a Fist' at number 90. All songs were from the band's first album 'Lungs'.

The Queens of the Stone Age were formed by Josh Homme in 1997 in California, America. It started from the break-up of the band Kyuss with members Josh Homme and Alfredo Hernández going on to form The Queens of the Stone Age. They were later joined by Kyuss former member Nick Oliveri. There have been a number of line-up changes since their formation, and currently the band line-up is Josh Homme (vocals and multi-instrumentalist), Troy Van Leeuwen (multi-instrumentalist), Joey Castillo (drums), Michael Shuman (bass) and Dean Fertita (multi-instrumentalist).

Many artists have collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age including PJ Harvey, Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, Billy Gibbons and Chris Goss.

The Arctic Monkeys are a band from Sheffield, England who were formed in 2002. As a thank-you to fans coming to their early gigs and as a way to get their music out there, they recorded seventeen demos on CDs, giving them out for free at gigs. This technique not only helped to spread knowledge of the band through Sheffield, but to a wider audience after fans promoted the music themselves on the internet. The Arctic Monkeys facebook page, for example, was set up by fans, and the band grew in popularity.

The band members are Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards), Jamie Cook (guitar and piano), Matt Helders (drums, percussion, vocals)and Nick O'Malley (bass guitar and backing vocals) with previous members being Andy Nicholson and Glyn Jones.

The Dresden Dolls are a two piece band from Massachusetts, America. They have self-coined a term for their style, calling it "Brechtian punk cabaret", and they are known for their great live shows. They were formed in 2000, and the band members are Amanda Palmer (vocals, piano, harmonica, ukulele) and Brian Viglione (drums, percussion, guitar, bass guitar, vocals).

Their song 'Girl Anachronism' also appeared on the count at position 30, with both songs coming from their self-titled first album.

Augie March are a band known for their poetic lyrics and lead singer, Glenn Richards', beautiful vocals. They are a five piece band who were formed in Victoria, Australia in 1996. The band members are Glenn Richards (vocalist and rhythm guitar), Adam Donovan (lead guitar), Edmondo Ammendola (bass),David Williams (drums), and Kiernan Box (keyboards).

Their name is taken from the bildungsroman book 'The Adventures of Augie March' by Saul Bellow which follows the growth of the protagonist, Augie March, during the Great Depression.

The song 'One Crowded Hour' is from their third album 'Moo, You Bloody Choir'

M83 are an electronic/indietronic band that were formed in 2001 in Antibes, France. The band members are Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau.

The success of 'Midnight City', the song polled in first place in music magazine Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks list for 2011, was not just due to it being a great song. It was also due to the band's promotion of the single and album. M83 provided 'Midnight City' as a free download on their website, and combined with touring throughout North America and Europe, word spread wide.

'Midnight City' is from their sixth album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'.
