Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Purple is a secondary colour that is similar to violet light. Made from mixing red and blue it has a huge range of colours depending on where it sits between them. Towards the blue gives deep indigo purple tones and the redder colours include magenta. Very common shades are violet, lilac, amethyst, eggplant, lavender and mauve.

It has long been associated with royalty, piety, religion, pride and protests. The western world also relates it to vanity and extravagance. During the 1960s it became associated with counterculture and psychedelics, particularly LSD, which spilled over into the music scene of the time. There are a number of bands who used the colour in their name.

The Purple Gang was an American rock band from Los Angeles, California who were active from 1965-1967. Formed by 15 year-old students, its name was derived from a Chicago Gang.

One of the biggest bands that formed secondary to featuring psychedelic rock was Deep Purple. They began in London in 1967 as one of the pioneers of heavy metal and hard rock.

In 1969 an American country rock band emerged from the San Francisco psychedelic rock. Named New Riders of the Purple Sage, its original lineup included members who would later become the Grateful Dead.

The March Violets are an English post-punk, gothic rock band formed in 1981 by a group of Leeds university students. and New Zealand had an alternative rock band in the 1980s named Look Blue Go Purple.

A lot of later groups went for shades of purple such as The Lilac Time, an English alternative folk rock band formed in 1986 and The Violets who were an English post punk, indie, pop band from 2003 in London.

Hey Violet hailed from Los Angeles in 2008 with an all-female teenage group as did indie rock duo The Violet Lights in 2011. Magenta are a Norwegian industrial, alternative rock band from 1991 and a Welsh progressive rock band formed in 1999.
