Answer: The electric chair

The dentist in question was Alfred P. Southwick, a member of the New York committee set up to determine a more humane way of execution than hanging. He developed the idea of passing an electric current through a condemned man after hearing how quickly and relatively painlessly a drunk had been electrocuted on touching some power lines. His device appeared in the form of a chair, as he was a dentist by profession and performed most of his procedures in chairs.

The first chair was produced by Harold P. Brown (who worked for Thomas Edison) and Arthur Kennelly.

The first person to be executed in the electric chair was William Kemmler, in Auburn Prison on 6 August 1890. The first woman was Martha M. Place at Sing Sing Prison on 20 March 1899.
