9. John Donne, the poet who wrote "No man is an island" became obsessed with death and near the end of his life posed for a portrait that was used afterwards to create the effigy used on his monument. What was he wearing in the portrait?

Answer: A shroud

John Donne's troubles began when he eloped with his boss's niece, and it didn't help that her outraged father was Lieutenant of the Tower of London. Donne was thrown into prison and his hitherto promising Parliamentary career was over. After years of poverty he was eventually reconciled with his father-in-law and also gained the favour of King James I.

The King insisted that he became an Anglican priest, after which he became a Royal Chaplain. His wife, Anne, died aged 33 after giving birth to their twelfth child, following which Donne wrote no more love poems.

He was appointed Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in 1621 and held that post until his death. Donne posed, dressed in a shroud, for a portrait that was completed only a few weeks before he died on 31 March 1631.

His effigy, taken from that portrait, survived the Great Fire of London and can still be seen in St Paul's. "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee."
