10. Another ship called 'Hermione', this time belonging to the Royal Navy, became notorious in 1799, for what reason?

Answer: Mutiny

HMS Hermione was launched in 1782. In 1797 a number of her crew, driven to desperation by the cruelty and unreasonableness of the Captain Hugh Pigot, turned on the captain and officers and brutally murdered eight of them as well as Pigot.
Fearing retribution for their deeds, the remaining crew set sail for Spain and handed the ship over to the Spanish authorities. The ship was renamed 'Santa Cecilia' and several of the crew remained aboard.
Eventually, the ship was recaptured by HMS Surprise, under Captain Edward Hamilton. The mutiny was regarded as the bloodiest in Royal Naval history, and eventually 33 of the mutineers were brought to trial; twenty-four were hanged, one was transported and the rest were pardoned.
The ship was renamed 'Retaliation', and 1800 renamed again to become 'Retribution'. She was broken up in 1805.
