1. When was the modern-day bowling ball invented?

Answer: 1860s

Bowling in one form or another has existed for centuries, some authorities suggesting as early a date as 3200BCE, however the modern design of bowling ball did not appear until 1862. Then it was made from wood. Rubber was first used in 1905 followed by polyester or plastic materials around 1970.
2. Where was chess invented?

Answer: India

Chess developed from an Indian game called Chaturanga around 1,400 years ago. The game subsequently spread throughout Asia and Europe, gradually evolving into what we now know as chess around the 16th century.
3. What nationality was the inventor of velcro?

Answer: Swiss

In 1941, Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral went for a walk in the Alps, noticing how burdock seeds stuck to his socks and coat; and realised that he had stumbled on something that could be useful. The word "Velcro" is made up from the French words velours (velvet) and crochet (hook).
4. Where was face powder invented?

Answer: Egypt

Archaeological remains date the use of face powder to between 2000 BCE and 1200 BCE. The powders contained, amongst other things, lead fibres, a common cosmetic ingredient in ancient Egypt.
5. In what century was the printing press invented?

Answer: 1400s

In Germany, around 1440, goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press. His invention started the Printing Revolution.
6. Where was the first commercial bungy jumping site?

Answer: New Zealand

Bungy jumping developed from the land diving ritual of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu. The first modern bungee jumps were made in the late 1970s in England and America, but it wasn't until 1986 that organised commercial bungee jumping began, in New Zealand.
7. What of the following categories best describes a theremin?

Answer: Musical instrument

The theremin is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the performer. It was invented by Leon Theremin, who patented it in 1928.
8. In what year was Diet Coke invented?

Answer: 1982

Diet Coke was launched in 1982. In 2018, Diet Coke was packaged in a taller, more slender can but changed back to the conventional shape a year later.
9. What country holds the title for most independent inventors applying for patents?

Answer: China

China leads with a total of almost 700,000 international patent applications filed per year. It is followed by the United States and Japan.
10. Who invented ice cream?

Answer: Chinese

The exact origins of ice cream are hard to pin down accurately, but it is generally accepted that it was invented by the ancient Chinese. It was brought to Italy by Marco Polo, to France by Catherine de Medici, and thence to America by Thomas Jefferson.
