To say that he did not get along with his stepmother, Anne Sophie Reventlow, would perhaps be an understatement, especially because his own mother, Queen Louise, had still been alive when his father had first married Reventlow.
After his father died, he sent his stepmother to her childhood home Clausholm, only allowing her to leave when he gave her permission, which he never did.
