Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Deposed 36 years before his death.

Answer: Christian II

Christian II (1481-1559) was the King of Denmark and Norway from 1513-1523. Among historians, his reputation runs the gamut from cruel tyrant to progressive leader. He was overthrown in a rebellion after attempting to strengthen the rights of the commons by weakening the rights of the nobility and clergy.

His uncle then took the throne as Frederick I. Christian II would be held in captivity for the remainder of his life, dying 36 years and five days after the end of his reign.
2. Only King of Iceland as a separate kingdom.

Answer: Christian X

Christian X (1840-1947) was King of Denmark from 1912 until his death. During his reign Iceland also became a separate kingdom (1918-1944) in union with Denmark under his personal rule. During the German occupation of Denmark, the king became a popular symbol of resistance. During his daily rides through Copenhagen, he claimed he needed no bodyguard because the entire Danish people were his guard.

In another case, he threatened to war a yellow Star of David himself if the occupation government would require Danish Jews to wear them.
3. Last person who was King of both Denmark and Norway.

Answer: Christian VIII

Christian VIII (1786-1848) was King of Denmark from 1839 until his death and briefly King of Norway in 1814. He was elected King of Norway after he was sent there by his father to strengthen Norwegian support for Denmark in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.

As king, he was generally opposed to the liberal reforms which were becoming increasingly supported in Denmark. He was a royal patron of astronomy.
4. Denmark was never involved in a war while he was king.

Answer: Christian VI

Christian VI (1699-1746) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1730 until his death. During his reign, Denmark was not at war with any nation. His reign was known, instead, for several building projects. In 1733, Christian passed a policy known as adscription that required peasants to remain in their region of birth. Highly religious, his beliefs would often shape his policies as King.
5. Elected King of Denmark in 1448.

Answer: Christian I

Christian I (1426-1481) ruled Denmark from 1448 until his death, with periods of rule over Sweden (for a brief time) and Norway (for a longer time) as part of the Kalmar Union. He brought the Danish throne to the House of Oldenburg, which would rule the country in some form for the next several centuries. Christian would attempt more than once to regain control of Sweden with one such attempt ending in a loss for Denmark at the Battle of Brukneberg.
6. Regents ruled on his behalf during most of his reign.

Answer: Christian VII

Christian VII (1749-1808) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1766 until his death. Beginning in 1772, mental illness would leave Christian as only nominal king with decisions being made by various regents. His regions introduced some progressive reforms to Denmark but also dealt with the challenges of the Napoleonic Wars.

His reign is presented in several works of literature and film.
7. First king crowned on the Throne Chair of Denmark.

Answer: Christian V

Christian V (1646-1699) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1670 until his death. He was the first Danish King crowned on the Throne Chair of Denmark at Frederiksborg Castle. The throne is made in part from narwhal tusks. Christian's personal courage made him a popular ruler. He introduced the first law code for all of Denmark in 1683. He would be succeeded by his son Frederick IV.
8. The Father-in-Law of Europe.

Answer: Christian IX

Christian IX (1818-1906) was King of Denmark from 1863 until his death. He gained the title "Father-in-Law of Europe" through the marriage of his six children into other royal houses. Near the beginning of his reign, he had to deal with the loss of a significant amount of Danish territory to Prussia. During his reign, he generally worked to slow the increasing democratization of Denmark.
9. Established Lutheranism as the state religion of Denmark.

Answer: Christian III

Christian III (1503-1559) was King of Denmark from 1534 until his death, and also King of Norway for much of that time. He was sympathetic to Lutheranism from an early age, hearing Martin Luther speak at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Lack of support among the Catholic clergy of Denmark would cause civil war early in his reign. Land confiscated from ecclesiastical institution were distributed by the king to his supporters.
10. Became King of Denmark at the age of nine.

Answer: Christian IV

Christian IV (1577-1648) had the then-longest reign of any Danish monarch in history (1588-1648) or 59 years. During his rule, Denmark was involved in several wars, including the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The Danish navy more than doubled in size during his reign.

The city of Oslo was renamed Christiana after him. The arts --including painting and music-- were patronised by the crown during his reign.
