Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Bible, Jesus relates a parable in which he compares the Kingdom of God to what kind of seed?

Answer: Mustard seed

The parable is told in three of the four canonical gospels: Matthew (13:31-32), Mark (4:30-32) and Luke (13:18-19). It is described as the smallest of all seeds but when sown it grows greater than all the herbs.

2. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and people around the world celebrate on 17th March believing that this was the date of his death. Where was he born?

Answer: His exact place of birth is unknown

Born somewhere in Britain arguably in the late 4th century A.D., the man who would come to be known as St. Patrick was captured by pirates as a child and brought to Ireland. During his enslavement, he was called to Christianity and escaped his captors after six years.

It is said he was born in 375 A.D. somewhere in Scotland. Some believe he was born in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton on the west coast of Scotland and it was there that he was captured by pirates.

3. The concept of Yin and Yang, relating to opposing forces that are also complementary, is fundamental to the philosophy of which religion?

Answer: Taoism

Yin and Yang are seen as two parts of a mutual whole, i.e. man and woman, good and evil, light and dark, etc. The concept is part of Ancient Chinese philosophies that can be traced back to the 4th century B.C., though it could easily be older.

4. In the Abrahamic religions this river is revered. It is the site of battles, the baptism place of Jesus, and where the Children of Israel entered the Promised Land. A real river that's part of the border between Israel and Jordan, which river is it?

Answer: Jordan River

When compared to other rivers in the world, the Jordan River is not that remarkable. However, in terms of religious significance, it is one of the more prominent rivers in different beliefs. In Christianity, this is the place that John the Baptist took Jesus of Nazareth and dipped him in the waters so that he received the spirit of God.

In Judaism, the Children of Israel crossed over the river to reach the Promised Land, then known as Canaan. It was also the site of miracles, like the healing of Naaman's leprosy, and battles, like when the Midianites were slain by Gideon.

In Islam, the river is called Nahr Al Sharieat and it is revered through the experiences in the Bible.

5. In Great Britain, Pancake Day is another name for which religious festival?

Answer: Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is the day before the Christian season of Lent starts. On this day it is traditional to eat pancakes which are made from flour, eggs, sugar and butter. 6. Which ecclesiastical polity, at the opposite end of the spectrum from hierarchical churches, holds that the local faith community is supreme?

Answer: congregationalism

Congregationalism differs from both episcopal church structure (Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican/Episcopal) and presbyterian church structure (Presbyterians). Congregationalists hold that the local congregation is autonomous and therefore supreme. Most deny the distinction between lay and ordained. Quakers, Baptists, Congregationalist and many non-denominational churches adopt and follow this polity (as do many Jewish synagogues and Islamic mosques).

While there are often some linkages of individual churches into groups, the associations are voluntary.

9. Who was the "seller of purple" in the New Testament?

Answer: Lydia

Lydia, mentioned by Paul in Acts, is a significant figure in the New Testament. The fact that she is a "seller of purple" denotes wealth (purple was a difficult shade to reproduce and was worn by the rich). She was also not identified by a husband or a father - unusual for the time period - making her a working woman of means.

She invited Paul to her home in his travels, and is widely considered to be the first European Christian convert.
