Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the King James Bible, what are the opening words to both the book of Genesis in the Old Testament and the Gospel of John in the New Testament?

Answer: In the beginning

The Book of Genesis begins by saying that "In the Beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth", before going on to a long description of the rest of creation. Unlike the other Gospels, John opens with theology instead of genealogy, stating, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God".

2. Around the year 600, Pope Gregory I enumerated in a short list all the human vices that would lead to eternal damnation. What did he include in that list?

Answer: Seven Deadly Sins

In Catholic doctrine, the seven deadly (also referred to as mortal or capital) sins are the most grievous offences against God's law. They cause a corruption of the soul and spiritual death (hence "deadly"), and may lead to more serious error. (They are not, however, mortal sins, those which may lead to eternal damnation if not absolved during life.) The list established by Pope Gregory the Great included lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, wrath, envy and pride.

The concept of the seven deadly sins was popularised over the centuries by philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas, and poets such as Dante Alighieri and Geoffrey Chaucer.

3. Which of the pairs of religion / main symbol are not matched correctly?

Answer: Islam / Torii gate

Torii gate is the main symbol for Shintoism, representing a passageway between our finite world and the infinite world of the gods. Islam is commonly represented by a crescent moon and a five-pointed star.

4. If a person was described as a Gentile in the Bible, which of these could you claim with certainty?

Answer: Non Jewish ethnicity

Gentile is used as a blanket term to describe all non-Jewish people in the Bible. The Old Testament in particular refers to all Israelites as people of God. Those that didn't fall under this classification were called Gentiles. This distinction is later removed by Jesus in the New Testament where even Gentiles are welcomed to accept the Gospel.

5. Which of these groups originated as a Christian sect but became an all-inclusive movement and search for truth?

Answer: Unitarian Universalist

Originally Unitarians were Protestants who believed in a unitary God and rejected the doctrine the Trinity, while Universalists were Protestants who embraced the universal salvation of humanity, not limited to the Elect or necessarily even to professed Christians.

In the 1960s, portions of these two unorthodox movements in Christianity merged. Eventually, Unitarian Universalism (UU) evolved into a pluralistic religious movement with no holy book, dogma, creed, or doctrine, but rather seven guiding principles, such as the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Adherents of UU in the 21st century could be monotheists, atheists, agnostics, deists, humanists, or pagans; unsurprisingly, there is a wide diversity of practices.

While there exists an International Council of Unitarians and Universalists, each congregation has complete control over its affairs.

6. A truck drives by which says "Saint Vincent de Paul" on the side. What are the most likely contents?

Answer: food, clothing, necessities for the poor

Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) was a French Roman Catholic priest whose entire career was spent in service to the poor. He founded several societies -- lay and religious -- to relieve the poor. A variety of these organizations are loosely banded together as The Vincentian Family which has spiritual, if not administrative, unity in these principles.

His example is honoured not only by Roman Catholic sainthood but by his feast being kept in The Church of England and the Episcopal Church.

7. Of the twelve original apostles of Jesus Christ, which one was a tax collector? (Hint: One of the four gospels in the Bible is attributed to him.)

Answer: Matthew

Tax collectors are not highly thought of today, but in the time of Jesus' ministry on earth, they were generally detested and despised for serving the Roman Empire. Matthew is the answer here; he was actually collecting taxes when Jesus called him, but unhesitatingly rose and followed Jesus' summons. Matthew is credited with writing one of the four Biblical gospels. Luke also is credited with being a gospel author, but he was a physician, and not one of the Twelve. Peter was a fisherman, and he did not author any of the four Biblical gospels. Thomas, while one of the Twelve, never collected taxes, and became (in)famous for doubting the resurrection of Jesus.

8. On many crucifixes in many Christian churches, there appears a sort of scroll or plaque over the head of Jesus which reads "INRI." For what do these letters stand?

Answer: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews

According to all three of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 27:37; Mark 15:26 and Luke 23:38) and John 19:19, Pontius Pilate ordered a sign placed above the crucified Jesus' head reading "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

The Latin was "Iesus Nazerenus Rex Iudaeorum" abbreviated INRI. In Western art, this sign is called the "titulus" or title. In Eastern Churches, the sign reads INBI which is the initials of the same inscription in Greek.

9. Fill in the blank. Revelation 13:1 (King James Version) states, "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of ____________"?

Answer: Blasphemy

One of the more descriptive scenes in Revelation appears in chapter 13. John describes a terrifying creature rising from the sea to take over the world. The name of blasphemy was on his seven heads. He also had ten crowns, which might mean it will rule or did rule ten kingdoms.

10. In the Bible, the Gospel of Matthew (English Standard Version) told of Joseph taking Mary and the baby Jesus to Egypt. That gospel told it fulfilled what was "spoken by the prophet". Who was the prophet referenced?

Answer: Hosea

Hosea is considered one of the twelve minor prophets and his teachings appear in both the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Old Testament. Hosea may have simply been referencing that God had delivered the Israelites from Egypt during the Exodus when he was credited in Chapter 11:1 (of Hosea) with: "When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt". Yet Matthew recorded the parallel - and considered it prophesy and history - when he told that Joseph had taken Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod.

Then after Herod had died they returned to the land of Israel.
