Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many of us are familiar with the quotation, "God helps those who help themselves." In which Biblical scripture is this found?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

Uh, sorry, this one is not in the Bible, but instead is found in one of Aesop's fables, "Hercules and the Wagoneer."
A man got his wagon stuck in the mud, then prayed to Hercules and this was the response given to him by Hercules, according to Aesop: "The gods help them that help themselves."

In fact, this teaching is QUITE contrary to various scriptures in the Bible. God helps those who are helpless and cannot help themselves. This is the premise of various religions of the world.

Benjamin Franklin used this phrase in his "Poor Richard's Almanac", and it has been widely quoted, with many people believing it to be "somewhere in the Bible." Benjamin Franklin believed in God; he just didn't believe that God intervened in men's lives on a personal level. As a deist, he felt that God was the creator of all things, but that He did not involve Himself in the affairs of men on a regular basis. Deists typically do not believe in the working of miracles, nor in the inerrancy of the scriptures, nor in the Trinity.
2. A knot of rope hangs from his leg, from fear perhaps he would die in the Holy of Holies, and others would need to pull him out with this rope. In which Bible scripture would you expect to find this account of the activities of the High Priest in the temple?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

Oh, so sorry.
If you chose any of the answers other than the one that says "It's not in the Bible", I'm afraid that you are incorrect!

It was quite a shock to me, too! I've been familiar with this one for a long, long time, and many others that I spoke with were also CERTAIN that it was in the Bible...somewhere. As it turns out, we were ALL wrong, so don't feel too badly; you've had LOTS of company! Thanks to Watchkeeper (Stuart), one of our team members who, like me, THOUGHT that it was in the Bible; did some research and found it, but not in a very likely place!

Not only is this NOT found in the Bible, it is also NOT found in any ancient source, including the following: the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the writings of Josephus, the Apocrypha, the Mishnah, the Babylonian Talmud, or the Jerusalem Talmud.

It is, however, found in a 13th A.D. century Jewish work called the Zohar (a word meaning 'Splendor' or 'Radiance') that first appeared in... Spain. The Zohar institutes a 125-step program for the Kaballists that purportedly leads to a type of further enlightenment. Those individuals who have not already attained a degree of "spirituality" receive little or no benefit from it. It is essentially a series of commentaries on the Torah, that are supposed to enable a person to achieve a state of perfection. In other words, it is comprised of mysticism that not even all Jewish people have embraced with open arms. It has been criticized for its encouragement of superstitions, as well as being brought into question for its veracity.
3. Many folks know that as the end of this earth age approaches, one will not be able to discern one season from another; winter will be like summer, and spring like autumn. Where will you find this in the Bible?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

Contrary to what you may have heard, this is NOT in the Bible. Let me repeat; it is NOT in there!

Conversely, however, in Genesis 8:22, in the King James Version of the Bible we read the following words that God is said to have thought to Himself after receiving Noah's sacrifice after the Great Flood:

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."
4. Wild animals are predicted to attack mankind because of his increasingly wicked ways. In which book of the Bible is this mentioned?

Answer: Ezekiel

Oh my.
Did you say that it wasn't in the Bible?

Sorry, but it IS in the book of Ezekiel. One of God's judgments against Jerusalem, which the prophet Ezekiel states in chapter 5 to be worse than the nations surrounding it because of its refusal to honor and obey God's precepts and commandments, ends with this verse (5:17), in the King James Version of the Bible:

"So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it."
5. "The lion shall lie down with the lamb." This idyllic prophecy can be found where in the Bible?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

Uh-oh! I just KNEW that was in the book of Isaiah, didn't you?

Here is how the text in Isaiah 65:25 ACTUALLY reads:

"The WOLF AND THE LAMB SHALL FEED together, and the LION SHALL EAT STRAW like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD."

One of the reasons that this may be misquoted so often is because of Christian references to Jesus as being the sacrificial LAMB and as being the LION of the tribe of Judah.

Another possible reason could be because of the more dramatic "vision" of a lion lying with a lamb, instead of just a wolf.

Whatever the reasons are, this often misquoted phrase is almost universally accepted as "true".
6. Where in the Bible would you find the exact wording to what is commonly referred to as "The Sinner's Prayer"?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

There is no single place in the Bible that a "sinner's prayer" is mentioned, nor even alluded to. This extra-Biblical concept was introduced by an evangelist named Charles Finney in the 1800s. While there is no particular "sinner's prayer" mentioned in Biblical scriptures, the concept that is conveyed by it is that people should repent (meaning to turn away from) their sins; believe in Messiah; and be baptized into God's family.
7. "And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom." Where is this found in the Bible?

Answer: 1 Kings

This scripture is found in 1 Kings 4:34, just after Solomon took the throne of Israel after his father David died. The 32nd verse states that... "And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five."
8. "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man." Where is this thought located in the Bible?

Answer: James

Found in James 1:13-15, this scripture goes on to say "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."

I believe that the only antidote to sin and death is true repentance, turning away from sinful thoughts and deeds.
9. "A fool and his money are soon parted." In which book of the Bible is this written?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

"A fool and his money are soon parted" is not in the Bible. It is a paraphrase of a proverb found in the poem "Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry" by Thomas Tusser: "A foole and his monie be soone at debate, which after with sorrow repents him too late."

Thomas Tusser was an English poet and this work was published in 1557.
10. "The Lord moves in mysterious ways." Where is this phrase found in the Bible?

Answer: It's not in the Bible

Sorry, that phrase is not in the Bible.

William Cowper, an English poet and hymn writer wrote the hymn, "Light Shining out of Darkness", and a line from that work, "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform" gave birth to the expression, "God moves in mysterious ways." He was born in 1735 and died in 1800.
