Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Book of Proverbs is a collection of advice on wide range of topics, including wisdom, morality, relationships, and practical advice for daily living. Written mostly by King Solomon, King David's second son, it provides wisdom and guidance to its readers.
Chapter 31 was one of the few chapters of Proverbs that was not written by Solomon. It was penned by King Lemuel of Massa (exactly who he was is uncertain, but Solomon included the sayings of Lemuel in his collection, so it is likely that Lemuel was known personally to King Solomon). Lemuel states that the pieces of advice compiled here were inspired by his mother, who reminded him of the value of a good wife: "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." (Proverbs 31:10, NIV).
Other parts of the book of Proverbs speak of how to live well. An important and prominent theme is that of wisdom and the benefits of knowing and honouring God. Proverbs 9:10 (NIV) states that "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Later in the book it says, "Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him." (Proverbs 30:5, NIV). It also speaks of how the Lord will stay with us and protect us in Proverbs 18:24 (NIV): "One with many friends may be harmed, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother."
Proverbs also exhorts us to take stock of just how we live: "The one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy" (Proverbs 28:13, NIV); and again, "Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be established." (Proverbs 16:3, NIV). An often-misquoted verse is "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18).
The book of Proverbs is a good one to read to encourage and inspire us to live a life pleasing to God. And it has 31 chapters - read one a day for a month!
