Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the verse according to the NIV Bible: "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting..."

Answer: "But a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."

This verse is part of the epilogue entitled "The Wife of Noble Character" which can be found in chapter 31, the final chapter in the book of Proverbs.

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." - Proverbs 31:30.

"She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy." - Proverbs 31:20.

"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." - Proverbs 31:26.

"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." - Proverbs 31:10.

2. Finish the verse according to the NIV Bible: "Truthful lips endure forever..."

Answer: but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

The correct answer is "but a lying tongue lasts only a moment." The passage in question comes from Proverbs 12:19. To put the verse in perspective, here's how verses 18 to 20 read: "Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace."

3. According to Proverbs 31:15 as found in the King James Version of the Bible, when does a virtuous wife give food to her family?

Answer: During the night

Is it any wonder that they always say 'A woman's work is never done'?
This verse reads, "She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household and a portion to her maidens."

4. Readers are instructed not to be glad when our enemy falls or suffers a setback. But isn't it only human nature to be satisfied when seeing the other fellow get his come-uppance? According to Proverbs 24:17-18, why is this discouraged?

Answer: If God sees one's self-satisfied attitude, He may turn away His wrath from one's enemy.

It IS human nature to want somehow to "even the score", and that is the problem. The Bible indicates that no one is made judge of other men, although nearly everybody sometimes loses sight of that fact. God has reserved that for Himself, and Himself alone.

The King James Version of Proverbs 24, 17th and 18th verses puts it this way:

"Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him."

In a very human desire to see justice done, one errs when trying to administer one's finite judgement without knowledge of ALL the facts. Just because humans tend to see justice served a certain way, this may not be God's way of judging at all. The Bible teaches that all people are sinners, after all, and if each person got what he "deserved", it would be most pitiable. Instead, God offers justice tempered with mercy, something humans so often forget in demanding pure justice alone.

5. In the first chapter of Proverbs (New American Bible), we are told of some evil men who try to entice the reader into helping them attack and rob an innocent and honest man. We are then warned as to what the fate of these evil people will be. When the hateful engage in such sinful acts, what does Proverbs say that they are actually doing?

Answer: Setting a trap for themselves.

Proverbs 1:18-19 read as follows:

"These men lie in wait for their own blood, they set a trap for their own lives. This is the fate of everyone greedy of loot: unlawful gain takes the life of him who acquires it."

I am reminded here of the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The Parable speaks of an innocent and honest man who is attacked by a band of robbers. Throughout Scripture, we are told that this kind of evil always brings anguish to the perpetrators.

6. What phrase completes the following verse from the New International Version? "He who ______ lends to the Lord." - Proverbs 19:17

Answer: is kind to the poor

The Bible has a lot to say about helping and caring for those who are unable to look after or stand up for themselves, but in this verse it is the poor who are mentioned.

What a wonderful promise is given here as the verse continues "and he (the Lord) will reward him for what he has done." Sometimes one may lend things to people and find that they are either never returned to us or are returned in a worse state than when it was lent. Christians believe that this isn't the case with God, however. This verse is used to teach that if something is lent to God, it is certain that he'll return it even better than it was when it was originally lent -- and quite probably with interest (a reward)!

7. "For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb and her mouth is ______". What words complete the King James verse?

Answer: Smoother than oil

Proverbs 5:3-5 of the King James Version give us this advice. "For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell."

8. Proverbs 22:11 (NIV) tells us that 'he who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious' will have whom for his friend?

Answer: the king

This verse suggests that human flattery is not the way to gain influential friends, but that purity of heart and gracious speech are the way to form lasting relationships with important people.

9. Many people admire beautiful women, but the Bible teaches that beauty is not everything. What does Proverbs 11:22 compare a beautiful, but indiscreet woman to?

Answer: A pig wearing a gold jewel in its snout

I always have the mental picture of the pig strutting around proudly with a priceless jeweled ring in its snout. Not exactly what any pretty woman wants to be compared to! This verse says that being foolish in how one speaks can ruin even the best of physical features.

10. Proverbs 3:6 (New King James Version) says, "In all your ways acknowledge Him (God)." With what promise does this verse conclude?

Answer: And He shall direct your paths.

Life can be full of unexpected twists and turns, but Christians believe that this proverb assures them that God is always willing to direct the way a believer should go.
