Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the King James Version, Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of [Him] is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction". What word(s) should replace Him?

Answer: The Lord

"Fear" in this proverb does not mean to be scared of. It means fear as in reverence, that is, respect of the Lord. The root of the word "to fear" in Latin is the same as respect.
2. In the King James Version, Proverbs 2:6 says, "For the Lord giveth [it]: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." What word(s) should replace [it]?

Answer: wisdom

Solomon is often credited with writing the book of Proverbs. He is known as the wisest man in the Bible. Solomon was King David's son.
3. In the King James Version, Proverbs 6:20 says, "My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of [her]". Who does the "her" refer to?

Answer: thy mother

God must think obeying parents is very important as it is mentioned in several different books in the Bible. It is, in fact, one of the Ten Commandments found in Exodus.
4. In the King James Version, Proverbs 8:7 says "For my mouth shall speak [it] and wickedness is an abomination to my lips." What does it refer to?

Answer: truth

Honesty is another important value to God. Like honoring one's mother and father, there is a commandment that talks about not lying. This tends to be true in all religions: they teach that people should be honest.
5. In the King James Version, Proverbs 9:13 says, "A foolish woman is clamorous; she is simple and knoweth [this]". What does she know?

Answer: Nothing

Clamorous means "constantly seeking attention" (www.dictionary.com). This is in contrast with a woman who goes about her business because it's what she has to do, not because she wants attention for doing it. It is never good to be boastful and proud, rather one should do the right thing and let others boast for them.
6. In the King James Version, Proverbs 10:12 says, "[This] stirreth up strife; but love covereth all sins." What does "this" refer to?

Answer: Hatred

This verse reminds me of the New Testament when Jesus says He died for our sins because He loved us. Christians believe that His blood was enough to cover everyone's sins who believe in Him.

This verse talks about how when people hate someone all they can see is a person's bad points, but when they love someone they can see beyond a person's flaws.
7. In the King James Version, Proverbs 11:4 says, "[They] profit not in the day of wrath but righteousness delivereth from death." What are "they"?

Answer: Riches

Someone can have all the money in the world and it does not make them any less guilty of being a sinner. However, Christians believe that the one Man who was truly righteous can save sinners from death (and by death they mean separation from God for eternity). Having money does not make someone perfect.
8. In the King James Version, Proverbs 18:21 says "[This] and [that] are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." What are this and that?

Answer: Death and life

This verse does not literally mean that you can kill a person by talking to them. However it does mean that our words are very powerful. It says in James 3:8, "But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."
9. In the King James Version, Proverbs 20:1 says, "[It] is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever deceived thereby is not wise." What does "it" refer to?

Answer: Wine

This verse holds true for anybody. We know from studies that alcohol, even wine, affects a person's actions and words. In substance abuse rehab alcohol is often referred to as "liquid courage" because so many people seem braver after they have had a few drinks.
10. In the King James Version, Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up [someone] in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Who is the someone being referred to?

Answer: a child

This verse says that if you raise your child with respect for rules, as an adult your child will also have respect. A child's first impressions are that of his/her parents so it is very important that the parent guides that child at a very young age.
