Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Since our team has decided to dedicate this series to our friend and former teammate, Marten, whom we know as "birdman585", and to the honor and glory of Christ, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on BIRDS, as found in the Bible, for the very first quiz in this series. Ready? Here we go! In Ezekiel 17 we see a whole BUNCH of birds, lodging in the boughs of a great tree. What type of tree is mentioned in this text (King James Version)?

Answer: cedar

A cedar tree is spoken of in Ezekiel 17:22-24.

"Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:
In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell. And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it."
(King James Version)

Many Christians also see a parallel of this view of Christ being represented in the book of Isaiah 11:1-2:
"And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;"

A safe haven for "birds" of all types might possibly seen to be an allegory for "men" of all types, at least those who place their trust in Jesus as their Savior.

2. What bird is said to represent the Holy Spirit, according to accounts found in the four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)?

Answer: dove

It says in Matthew 3:16, "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."

The dove is also mentioned in the Old Testament as the bird that finds the olive branch, letting Noah know the waters have gone down from the Great Flood (Genesis 8:11).

3. Jesus tells a parable about an extremely small seed, which is planted and grows into a large plant with branches where the birds of the air can perch in its shade. Which seed is this?

Answer: mustard seed

See Mark 4:30-32. Jesus says that this is a picture of what the Kingdom of God is like. It starts as something very small yet grows into something large where many people can find shelter.

In this passage, Mark also tells us that Jesus told many parables, which were stories that his listeners could relate to and understand. However, he explained many other things to his disciples privately.

4. In the book of Revelation, chapter 12, a great bird is described as being an aid to the woman who had given birth to a son. What type of bird's "wings" is she provided with, at least in a metaphorical sense?

Answer: an eagle

In the King James Version of Revelation 12:14, we read: "And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."

One interpretation of this goes something like this: The woman (who represents the nation of Israel and/or the church of God) is protected for a period of a year; two additional years and a half of a year, or a total time equalling three and a half years (the first half of the Great Tribulation period). The serpent represents the devil and without aid from others, the woman would not survive his attacks.

(Some Christians feel that the church will NOT be present during the Great Tribulation period at the end of the world, while others believe just the opposite.)

5. In Leviticus 5:7 the Bible talks about making a 'trespass' or 'sin' offering to the Lord. It says that if a man is poor and cannot afford to offer a lamb or a kid of a goat, he may offer a choice of two birds. One is two turtledoves. What is the other choice?

Answer: Two pigeons

He is to bring them to the priest. Their necks then have to be wrung and the blood sprinkled on the altar. One bird is for a 'sin' offering and the other for a 'burnt' offering. For those of us who believe in the doctrines of the New Testament, it was Christ's blood which was shed for all, and so we no longer need to offer any animals or birds for a sin offering.

6. Jeremiah 8:7 talks about a bird of the heavens which "knows her times." Which bird is Jeremiah talking about?

Answer: the stork

Both black and white storks pass through Palestine every year, flying north from their winter haunts in Arabia and Africa. It is the white stork which is seen most often and in the greatest numbers. Jeremiah is teaching a lesson here in saying that the Israelites of the time are blind to the times of judgment coming upon them and that even the stork of the heavens knows her times.

7. When is the first time "birds" are mentioned in the Bible in the King James Version?

Answer: Genesis 15:10

It says in Genesis 15:10, "And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not."

In Genesis 1:20 birds are talked about but the word birds itself is not used. They are referred to as fowl.

8. God once put a curse on the land of Edom (Idumea) for its refusal to assist Israel in time of trouble. Edom had been settled by descendants of Esau, while Israel had been settled by descendants of his brother, Jacob. What kinds of birds does the prophet Isaiah say will occupy the land of Edom after God's judgments are passed upon it, according to the King James Version? (CLUE - Isaiah 34:11-15)

Answer: cormorant, raven, great owl, screech owl, and vulture

The King James Version of Isaiah 34:11-15 says this:

"But the CORMORANT (pelican) and the bittern (hedgehog or porcupine) shall possess it; the OWL also and the RAVEN shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for OWLS. The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr (jackal, hyena or wolf) shall cry to his fellow: the SCREECH OWL also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. There shall the GREAT OWL make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate."

All of the birds and beasts that Isaiah speaks of were classified as "unclean" under Levitical law. The implication seems to be that the land will be perfect for all types of unclean animals because of its own "unclean" status due to man's evil ways.

9. A king is like... a bird? Which Old Testament king once compared himself to THREE different birds in nearly the same breath? "I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top."

Answer: David

In Psalm 102:6-7 we see David comparing himself to "unclean" birds. This may have been his way of indicating that he had fallen out of favor with God because of his sins, but certainly the entire chapter speaks of his faith in the power of God to deliver him from evil things.

10. Which birds did God send as meat for the Israelites when they were wandering in the desert?

Answer: quail

See Exodus 16:11-13. The Israelites were grumbling because they had eaten better food in Egypt, so God sent them quails in the evening and manna in the mornings.
