Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I will sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!" is the beginning of a song in the Old Testament. In what book do you find such a song?

Answer: Exodus

Moses may have been "slow of speech and slow of tongue" but that certainly didn't stop him from leading the Israelites in song, as per Exodus 15:1-18. Appropriately, the song is called the 'Song of Moses' in the New King James Version Bible.

Moses led the Israelites in singing the song just after the Red Sea was miraculously parted and they made it safely to the other side. It was a different story for the Egyptian army which was in pursuit of the Israelites. Scripture reports the water ceased to be parted when the soldiers were part way across the Red Sea and they all drowned.

Hence, the song begins with these words: "I will sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!"

Scripture goes on to tell of Moses' sister Miriam taking a timbrel and dancing, while leading the Israelite women in a victory song as well.
2. What leader of the Israelites received a promise from God He would hamstring the horses of his enemies?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua is the correct answer as per Joshua 11:6-9. Chapter 11 tells of the kings of the northern part of Canaan forming an alliance to battle the Israelites when Joshua and his people moved into the territory. Verse 4 states the opposing armies consisted of "as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots."

However, Verse 6 quotes God telling Joshua not to worry about his adversaries because "you shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."

Verse 8 goes on to tell of the LORD delivering the opposing armies into the hand of Israel "who defeated them and chased them to Greater Sidon, to the Brook Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward."
3. According to 1 Kings 4:26, what Israelite king had "forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots and twelve thousand horsemen?"

Answer: Solomon

Solomon is the correct answer, as per 1 Kings 4:26. The verse states the king of Israel had "forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen." While Israel boasted an impressive military under Solomon's reign, the country enjoyed a period of unprecedented peace and prosperity. 1 Kings 4:24 states Solomon "had peace on every side all around him and Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan as far as Beersheba."
4. According to 2 Kings 2:11, what prophet of God was whisked away to heaven by horses of fire?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah's sudden departure is recorded in 2 Kings 2:11-12, while he was walking along with the prophet Elisha. The NKJV Bible records Elijah being taken upward this way: "Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven."

No further details are given in Scripture.

The book of 2 Kings goes on to tell of Elisha replacing Elijah as the major prophet of God in Israel.
5. According to 2 Kings 6:17, who had a vision of mountains filled with horses and chariots of fire?

Answer: Elisha's servant

Elisha's servant is the one who had a vision of mountains filled with horses, as per 2 Kings 6:17. Scripture states Elisha's servant became terrified after seeing the enemy surrounding them, so Elisha prayed his eyes would be opened and he would see a mountain full of horses and chariots of fire protecting them. And sure enough, that's what happened.

In other words, you could say it's an open-and-shut case of eyes being closed and opened in Scripture.

See 2 Kings 6:8-23 for complete details.
6. According to 2 Kings 9:33, what wicked woman plunged to her death and had her blood splattered on Jehu's horses before she was trampled by the horses?

Answer: Jezebel

Jezebel, generally regarded as the most evil woman in the Bible, is the correct answer. Scripture states Jezebel died a gruesome death with her assistants throwing her out of an upper window on the instructions of Jehu. Details are given in 2 Kings 9:30-33. After painting her face, Jezebel looked down from an upper window and saw Jehu. After a few terse words between the two, Jehu asked three eunuchs to throw Jezebel out of the window, and they obliged. Scripture tells of Jezebel being thrown out with her blood splattering on a wall and the horses and then her body being trampled by horses.

Jezebel was despised because she vehemently opposed prophets of God and convinced Israelites to worship false gods. She was the wife of Ahab, king of Israel. According to 1 Kings 16:33, Ahab "did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger" than all the kings of Israel who were before him.
7. What prophet of God saw horses pulling four chariots, representing the four spirits of heaven?

Answer: Zechariah

Zechariah is the correct answer, as per Zechariah 6:1-8. In the passage, Zechariah tells of seeing horses pulling four chariots between two mountains of bronze. The first chariot was pulled by red horses, the second by black horses, the third by white horses and the fourth by dappled horses-strong steeds.

In Verse 5, an Angel of the LORD gives Zechariah an explanation of what he was seeing: "These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before the LORD of all the earth. The one with the black horses is going to the north country, the white are going after them, and the dappled are going toward the south country."
8. In what book do you read about locusts looking like horses preparing for battle?

Answer: Revelation

Revelation 9:7 tells of locusts that resembled horses, preparing for battle. "On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men," the verse states in the NKJV.

I don't profess to be an expert capable of giving an accurate interpretation of the passage. Suffice to say, Revelation is a book that has perplexed and mystified readers for almost 2,000 years.

It is the last book of the Christian Bible and was written by John while in exile on the island of Patmos.
9. According to Acts 23:23, who ordered seventy men on horses to accompany Paul out of Jerusalem to appear before Felix?

Answer: Claudius Lysias

Claudius Lysias ordered seventy men on horses to accompany Paul out of Jerusalem to appear before Felix. Scripture states Claudius Lysias took such action to prevent a plot to kill Paul from coming to fruition, as per Acts 23:11-35. According to Scripture, no less than forty men had planned to ambush Paul and vowed to neither eat nor drink until they had killed him. The ambush was planned to take place when Paul was taken to appear before Felix, the Roman procurator of Iudaea.

Scripture goes on to tell of Paul's sister's son hearing of the ambush plans and making Paul aware of the situation. (No name is given for Paul's sister or for her son.) Paul in turn made the authorities aware of the plot and Claudius Lysias, commander of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem, took action to ensure Paul's safety.

Acts 23:23-24 tells of Claudius Lysias assigning two hundred soldiers, seventy horseman and two hundred horsemen spearman to transport Paul safely to the hands of Felix during the third hour of the night.

Acts 23:26-30 provides information about a letter Claudius Lysias wrote to Felix.
10. According to Revelation 6:8, what color of horse represents death?

Answer: A pale horse

According to Revelation 6:8 a pale horse represents death. The verse in the NKJV states, "So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth."

Meanwhile, Revelation 6:1-2 tells of a white horse, while verses 3-4 tell of a fiery red horse and verses 5-7 a black horse. The white horse is associated with conquering the earth, while the red horse is associated with conflict on the earth and the black horse with famine.

Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible, was written by John while in exile on the windswept island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea.
