The New Testament -- Is Your Number Up? (Part 2) Quiz

This is another look at numbers that appear in the New Testament. As documented in my first quiz, there are other FunTrivia quizzes on numbers in the Old Testament, but little in regards to the New Testament. (The NIV was used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Luke 15:7, Jesus tells the parable of the lost sheep and tells of the joy the shepherd experiences after finding the missing animal. Complete the following Scripture verse: "I tell you in the same way there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ___ righteous persons who not need to repent."

Answer: 99

Scripture clearly states that when a sinner repents of his/her sins, there is extreme joy in heaven. In other words, Jesus says, no one can be too tainted with sin to enter Christendom.
2. Luke 19:1-10 tells the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector meeting with Jesus, after climbing up in a sycamore tree to get a better look at Him. Fill in the missing number from Verse 8: "But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, 'Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back ____ times the amount'."

Answer: 4

The Pharisees, or church leaders of the day, express outrage about Jesus associating with Zacchaeus, because tax collectors work for the Romans and are seen as the worst of sinners. Zacchaeus, however, vows that he wants to change his life around. And, to this end, he tells Jesus he will repay everyone four times the amount if he cheated anyone.
3. Matthew 9:20-23 tells of a woman who has been subject to bleeding for a number of years but, despite the efforts of the doctors, she has never healed. How many years has she been subject to this condition?

Answer: 12

Scripture states the woman has extreme faith and is healed by simply touching Jesus' cloak: "Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, 'If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.' Jesus turned and saw her. 'Take heart, daughter,' he said, 'your faith has healed you.' And the woman was healed from that moment."
4. Luke 17:1-11 tells of 10 lepers being healed by Jesus. How many lepers return to him to give thanks?

Answer: 1

After encountering the 10 lepers on the border between Galilee and Samaria, Jesus tells them to present themselves to the priests. After the lepers depart to see the priests, they are healed. Verses 15-19 state: "One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.

He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him -- and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, 'Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?' Then he said to him, 'Rise and go; your faith has made you well'."
5. In the extremely early days of the church, how many are counted as believers, as recorded in Acts 1:15? (Bear in mind that the information is given in the Scripture passage about Matthias being picked to replace Judas Iscariot as the 12th disciple.)

Answer: About 120

The church was indeed small at this point in time, but it would grow exponentially over the years, largely because of the disciples going to the ends of the known world preaching a resurrected Christ.
6. 1 Corinthians 13 is known as the Love Chapter. In the New International Version, how many times does the word 'love' actually appear in the 13 verses in this famous Scripture?

Answer: 9

The chapter is exquisitely written, with the word 'love' appearing nine times. There can be no mistaking the stock Paul puts on love. Here's how the first three verses start: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing."
7. How many books in the Bible is the apostle John traditionally credited with writing?

Answer: 5

John is credited with writing five books: the Gospel according to John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Revelation.
8. Acts 6:1-7 tells of the church leaders appointing disciples for the Grecian Jews. How many do they appoint?

Answer: 7

It is agreed to appoint seven disciples for the Grecian Jews, because the Hebraic Jews have apparently been overlooking the Grecian widows in the distribution of food. Acts 6:6 states that the chosen are "Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism."
9. In Revelations 1: 4, how many churches in Asia does John say his message is addressed to?

Answer: 7

The seven churches are named in verse 11: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.
10. In John 6:13, how many baskets did the disciples fill with leftovers after Jesus fed 5,000 men with only five loaves of bread and two small fish?

Answer: 12

Verses 12 and 13 state: "When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, 'Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.' So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten." It's almost as if God has a sense of humour.

Here we have 12 doubting disciples and, at the end of the feeding of the massive crowd (estimated to be 15,000 when women and children are included in the figure), the disciples are able to fill 12 baskets -- one for each.

In verse 7, Phillip expresses the sentiment that eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite. Yet, they end up with 12 baskets of food left over.
