Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a unique characteristic of the tyrannosaurus's limbs?

Answer: Long legs and short arms

One theory suggest that tyrannosaurus's arms might have shrunk in length over several generations to prevent accidental or intentional amputation when feeding. Being so tall enabled the tyrannosaurus to be an alpha predator of smaller vulnerable prey.
2. Robert Gebhardt discovered one of the biggest tyrannosauruses, nicknamed "Scotty," in 1991. Where did this discovery take place?

Answer: Canada

Robert Gebhardt, from Saskatchewan, Canada ,discovered "Scotty" on 16 August 1991. Gebhardt was a high school principal who accompanied a team of paleontologists from the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. When digging was completed, a 65% complete T. rex skeleton was revealed.
3. Tyrannosaurus rex means "Tyrant Lizard King".

Answer: True

Paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn coined the dinosaur's name in 1905. Scientist believe that the tyrannosaurus became extinct due to a asteroid that caused multiple tsunamis, earthquakes, and extreme dust clouds.
4. What is the name of the most complete T. rex discovered found in the twentieth century?

Answer: Sue

Sue was found on August 12, 1990, on South Dakota's Cheyenne River Sioux reservation. The T. rex was named "Sue" for Sue Hendrickson, who discovered the dinosaur. Sue (the dinosaur) is on display in the Field Museum of Natural History located in Chicago.
5. During what time period did the tyrannosaurus roam?

Answer: Cretaceous

T. rex reigned supreme during the Late Cretaceous (66 to 90 million years ago). Scientists estimate that 2.5 billion tyrannosauruses walked the Earth during their existence.
6. Tyrannosaurus rex was a carnivore.

Answer: True

Tyrannosaurus rex was a meat eater. Tyrannosaurus was at the top of the food chain in its environment and specialized in bringing down large dinosaurs like the Edmontosaurus and triceratops.
7. The first skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex was discovered in 1902 in Hell Creek, Montana, by which famous fossil hunter?

Answer: Barnum Brown

Barnum Brown was able to locate two more tyrannosaurs and also found a 1000-pound skull filled with serrated teeth. This Tyrannosaurus rex is displayed at New York City's American Museum of Natural History.
8. What classification of animal did the tyrannosaurus fall under?

Answer: Theropods

Theropods are a group of carnivorous, bipedal, saurischian dinosaurs that have hollow, thin-walled bones and, usually, small forelimbs. Scientists state there were three species of tyrannosaurus: T. rex ("king"), T. imperator ("emperor"), and T. regina ("queen").
9. What fruit is commonly used to describe the size and shape of a tyrannosaurus tooth?

Answer: Banana

Tyrannosaurus teeth have serrations to allow for the shredding of prey. When a tyrannosaurus lost teeth, they could regrow them, but scientists think it took about two years for the teeth to grow back.
10. American geologist Charles Pillmore discovered the first fossilized one of these from a tyrannosaurus.

Answer: Footprint

Charles Pillmore discovered the first fossilized footprint in 1983 at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico. After analysis by dinosaur track specialist paleontologist Martin Lockley, he concluded, "I couldn't believe how big it was. It was a theropod" - a predator - "and at that size, the only thing it could be was a Tyrannosaurus rex."
