2. Potentially making walking painful, a corn is a small, hardened lump of skin that often affects which part of the human body?

Answer: Feet

A corn is a lump of hardened tissue, known as a callus, that has grown inwards. Whilst they appear round on the outside, corns are characterised by a hard, tapering root that exerts pressure on whatever it's resting on; this pressure is what causes a corn to be painful.

Whilst they can grow any place on the body that is either a pressure point or weight-bearing, corns are most commonly found on the feet, and frequently cause pain when walking as the pressure placed on them pushes them into the soft flesh and nerves surrounding them.

Despite having a close resemblance to a barleycorn, the etymological source for the medical condition is vastly different; the Latin word for a corn is "cornus" (meaning "horn," in reference to its shape), whereas the "corn" part of "barleycorn" derives from an Indo-European word simply meaning "grain."
