Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why was there a short delay before play could start?

Answer: A flag for the first hole was missing and had to be brought out by buggy

For some reason the flag for the first hole (Hole 1) had gone missing and they couldn't start until it had been replaced.
2. On the first hole of the playoff, who finished up in a bunker (sand trap)?

Answer: Garcia

Sergio Garcia unfortunately found the hazard. Harrington birdied this hole (scored one under par) and Garcia bogeyed it (scored one over par). So Harrington was two shots ahead going on to the second (actually the 16th).
3. The second hole of the playoff was the 16th and a Par 3. Who hit the flag (pin) from the tee for a possible eagle (two under par) and hole-in-one?

Answer: Garcia

If it had hit the pin a little lower, it might have gone in to bring the match all square. As it was, both players parred and they went on to the third hole (17) with Harrington still two shots ahead.
4. The 17th hole at Carnoustie (third hole of the playoff) is a par 4. Both players were close to each other, and on the fairway with their first shot off the tee. Who was on the green with their second shot?

Answer: Both

Their second shot put both players on the green, but Harrington was actually closer to the hole.
5. Who got a birdie (one under par) on the third hole of the playoff?

Answer: Neither

Both players missed the hole on the left with their third shots, and parred this hole so Harrington was still two shots ahead as they went to the fourth and final hole, the infamous 18th.
6. Who went in the rough with his shot off the tee on the fourth playoff hole, the 18th?

Answer: Garcia

Although Garcia was in the rough and Harrington was on the fairway, Garcia actually had an advantage, as he had a good lie and a better line to the green, which he reached with his second shot.
7. Following a lay up in front of the Barry Burn, Harrington had a 35' possible par putt to win the Open.

Answer: True

Although it did not go in. (Many thanks to BubbaD and jlp1330 for putting (no pun intended!) me right on this one).
8. Who made par on the last hole (18th)?

Answer: Garcia

But Padraig Harrington, although he bogeyed the last, finished one shot ahead of Sergio Garcia to win the 2007 Open and be presented with the Claret Jug trophy.
9. Padraig Harrington became the first Irishman to win the Open since Fred Daley in 1947.

Answer: True

The Open was last won by an Irishman at Hoylake (Royal Liverpool), but Fred Daley was from Northern Ireland, so Padraig Harrington was actually the first man from Eire to win the Open.
10. Who joined Harrington in his celebration on the last green?

Answer: His wife and son

Interestingly, BBC coverage caught Harrington assuring his son that they would keep ladybirds in the Claret Jug! I hope the R & A (Royal & Ancient - golf's governing body) didn't hear him! So ended a fascinating Open, with the first win of a major by a European for 8 years. For Tiger Woods fans, he finished up with 282, five shots off the winning score.
