The XXXII Olympiad was delayed by one year due to COVID-19. A total of 11,319 athletes from 206 nations including the IOC Refugee Teams (EOC) and Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) took part. Russia and North Korea were banned from the Games due to doping. There were 339 events in 33 sports (50 disciplines). The IOC included four new sports - karate, surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing. Baseball and softball made a return to the Olympic list.

The top 10 nations in the medal tally (Gold, Silver, Bronze) at the Games were:

38-32-19 China
26-14-17 Japan
22-20-22 Great Britain
20-28-23 ROC
17--7-22 Australia
10-12-14 Netherlands
10-12-11 France
10-11-16 Germany
10-10-20 Italy

Canada finished 11th with 7-7-10, Brazil was 12th with 7-6-8, New Zealand was 13th with 7-6-7, Cuba was 14th with 7-3-5 and Hungary was 15th with 6-7-7.

A total of 88 nations won a medal at the Games, with 63 of those 88 winning gold medals. Bermuda, Philippines and Qatar won their first-ever Olympic gold medals. Burkina Faso, San Marino and Turkmenistan won their first-ever Olympic medals.

[o] Flora Dufffy (Bermuda) won the gold medal in women's triathlon.
[o] Hidilyn Diaz (Philippines) won the women's 55-kg category in weightlifting.
[o] Qatar won 2 gold medals -- Mutaz Essa Barshim in the men's high jump event and Fares Ibrahim in the men's 96-kg category in weightlifting.
[o] Polina Guryeva won the silver medal in women's 59-kg weightlifting event, the first ever medal for Turkmenistan.
[o] Hugues Fabrice Zango (Burkina Faso) won a bronze in men's triple jump event.

San Marino became the smallest nation to win 3 medals: Gian Macro Berti and Alessandra Perilli won silver in mixed trap shooting event, Perilli won a silver in women's trap shooting and Myles Amine won a bronze in men's freestyle 86-kg wrestling event.

Hong Kong achieved their best result since the began participating in the Games in 1952, winning 1 gold, 2 silvers and 3 bronzes. The gold medal was won by Cheung Ka Long in men's foil fencing. Sioban Bernadette Haughey won 2 silver medals in women's 100m and 200m freestyle. The 3 bronzes came from: women's table tennis team event, Grace Lau in women's kata event and Lee Wai See in women's sprint cycling.
