There were three new events: men's 800m freestyle, women's 1500 m freestyle and the mixed 4 x 100 m medley relay.

U.S. swimmer Robert Finke won the men's 800m freestyle new event. He completed a double on the long distance event with the victory in the 1500m freestyle. Katie Ledecky of USA won the women's 1500 m freestyle new event and the 800 m freestyle. Great Britain won the mixed 4 x 100 m medley relay finshing ahead of China and Australia.
2. Ahmed Hafnaoui surprisingly won the men's 400m freestyle event (he was the slowest qualifier). What African country is he from?

Answer: Tunisia

Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui (born 4 December 2002) was ranked no. 16th in the world in this event. He became the third swimmer to win a gold medal swimming from the 8th lane which was for the slowest qualifier. The previous two were: Franziska van Almsick (Germany), who won the 200m freestyle gold medal from Lane 8 at the 1994 FINA World Championships , held in Rome. Keiren Perkins (Australia) won the 1500m freestyle gold medal from Lane 8 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Thee previous world record of 2:19.11 had stood for almost 8 years -- it was held by Rikke Moller Pedersen (Denmark), set on 1 August 2013.

Evgeny Rykov (born 23 September 1996) won the two backstroke events. He beat favorite American Ryan Murphy who won the bronze medal in 100m event and silver in the 200m event.

Yui Ohashi (born 18 October 1995) became the first Japanese woman to swim under 2 min. 8 sec in 200 m individual medley. She won 200 m event in 2 min. 8.52 sec and the 400 m event in 4 min 32.08 sec.

Chinese Wang Shun (born 11 February 1994) became the first Asian swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in this event. He won a bronze medal in the same event at 2016 in Rio.

United States won 11 golds, 10 silvers and 9 bronzes, followed by Australia with 9 golds, 3 silvers and 9 bronzes. Great Britain were third winning 4 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze. American swimmer Caeleb Dressel won 5 gold medals in 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle, 100 m butterfly, 4 x 100 m freestyle relay and 4 x 100 m medley relay.
