Japan was the first Asian country to host the Games in 1964. The Games were held from 10th to 24th October. They were supposed to host the 1940 Games which were cancelled due to WWII. The host did well to finish third on the medal tally with 16 golds, behind USA with 36 golds and USSR with 30 golds.

In 1952, PRC sent only one athlete, a swimmer to participate in the Games. They participated in the 1984 Los Angeles after a lapse of 32 years. They finished with 15 golds in fourth place behind USA, Romania and West Germany. The 1984 Games were boycotted by 14 Eastern Bloc nations including the Soviet Union. Twenty four years later they hosted the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The film featured two British athletes Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell in the 1924 Games at Paris. Abrahams won the 100m gold medal and Liddell the 400m gold medal. Due to the tensions caused in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, many athletes from other nations were not able to attend the Games. There were only 62 athletes out of 651 competed from outside North America.

Rugby sevens which is a men's event was included for the first time in 2016 Rio Olympics. Fiji won this event and their first gold medal in Olympic history. Karate, baseball/softball, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing were approved by IOC in Tokyo Olympics.

The 1912 Stockholm Olympics was the last Games to award pure gold medal. Gold medal was first awarded in 1904 at St. Louis. In the 1896 and 1900, only silvers and bronzes were awarded. The gold medal awarded at 2012 London Olympics had only 1.34% gold.

The three records were all set by American athletes: Jim Hines in 9.95 sec. for 100m, Tommie Smith in 19.83 sec for 200m and Bob Beamon leapt over 8.9-m (29 ft 2 1/2in) in the long jump.

At the same Games, the world witnessed American athlete Dick Fosbury revolutionize the high jump with a "back-first" technique to win the gold medal with a height of 2.24-m (7 ft 4 1/2in). His technique became known as the "Fosbury Flop".
