Poland won the historic first gold medal of the event ahead of Dominican Republic, the surprise silver medal winner, and United States winning the bronze. The men were the lead and anchor runners with the second and third run by the women.

Bahamas won both events: Steven Gardiner won the men's event with compatriot, Shaunae Miller-Uibo winning the women's event. Shaune successfully defended the title she won at Rio 2016.

Kirani James won the bronze medal. He won this event at London 2012 and the silver medal at Rio 2016 to complete his collection of all the three types of medals.

Marcell Jacobs won the event in a time of 9.8 sec, ahead of American Fred Kerley with a time of 9.84 sec and Canadian Andre de Grasse in 9.89 sec. All three runners clocked their personal best times.

Jacobs won his second gold when Italy won the relay event in 37.50 sec. They pipped Great Britain by 0.01 sec. with Canada in third place. USA did not qualify for the final.

Answer: Women's 100 m

Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah won the event in OR time of 10.61 sec. beating the previous record held Florence Griffith Joyner of 10.62 sec, set over 30 years earlier at the 1988 Seoul. Compatriots Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the silver in 10.74 sec and Shericka Jackson the bronze in 10.76 sec.

Elaine Thompson-Herah became the first woman to become a double-double winner of the 100m and 200m sprints. She won the two events at 2016 Rio. She won her third gold medal with Jamaica winning the 4 x 100m relay.

Answer: High jump

Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy shared the gold medal in high jump. Both athletes cleared the height of 2.37m with the same number of attempts. Maksim Nedaesekau of Belarus won the bronze with the same height but he lost on the countback.

Soufiane El Bakkali became the first Moroccan athlete to win this event. Kenyan athletes won this event nine times in succession from 1984 to 2016, Since the event was introduced at the 1920 Olympics, a Kenyan won it eleven times.

Answer: 100m hurdles

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.37 sec. She finished ahead of American Kendra Harrison and Jamaican Megan Tapper.

Answer: Javelin

Neeraj Chopra hurled the javelin 87.58m in his second attempt to finish ahead of two Czech throwers Jakub Vadlejch and Vitzeslav Vesely.

Answer: 400m hurdles

Jacob Ingebrigsten beat favorite Kenyan runner Timothy Cheruiyot in the 1500m event. His compatriot Karsten Warholm won the 400m hurdles in a new world record time of 45.94 sec.

Answer: Sapporo

The venue was moved from Tokyo to Sapporo, located in Hokkaido, due to the cooler weather. Sapporo is on average 4°C (7°F) cooler than Tokyo in August.

The 20 km walk events were for men and women were won by Italy. Massimo Stano won the men's event and Antonella Palmisano the women's event. David Tomala of Poland won the men's 50 km walk.

Kenya won the marathon events for both men and women. Peres Jepchirchir was the gold medallist for the women's event. Eliud Kipchoge repeated his victory he won at Rio 2016. He became the third man to win back-to-back marathon titles after Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia in 1960 and 1964, and Waldemar Cierpinski of former East Germany in 1976 and 1980.
