Pool A: New Zealand, France, Italy, Uruguay, Namibia
Pool B: South Africa, Ireland, Scotland, Tonga, Romania
Pool C: Wales, Australia, Fiji, Georgia, Portugal
Pool D: England, Japan, Argentina, Samoa, Chile

Pool A
France beat New Zealand 27-13 in the opening match. They won all 4 pool games to finish top with 18 points. New Zealand finished second with 15 points from 3 wins and 1 loss. Italy was third with 10 points with 2 wins and 2 losses. France and New Zealand advanced to the quarter-final stage.

Pool B
Ireland topped the group with 19 points from 4 wins. South Africa was runner-up with 15 points from 3 wins and 1 loss. They lost to Ireland 8-13. Scotland was third with 10 points from 2 wins and 2 losses. Ireland and South Africa progressed to the quarter-final stage,

Pool C
Wales finished top with 19 points from 4 wins. Fiji and Australia finished with 11 points from 2 wins and 2 losses. Fiji edged Australia to qualify for the quarter-final with a better point difference +5 against -1. They also beat Australia 22-15. Fiji was surprisingly beaten by Portugal 23-24 in their last pool match.

Pool D
England won all 4 games to top the group with 18 points. Argentina finished second with 14 points from 3 wins and 1 loss. Japan was third with 9 points from 2 wins and 2 losses. England and Argentina qualified for the quarter-final stage.

Quarter-final
Argentina (no. 9 seed) upset Wales (no. 4 seed) 29-17. New Zealand edged Ireland 28-24. England beat Fiji 30-24. Host nation France narrowly lost to South Africa, by 1 point, 29-28.

Semi-final
New Zealand easily defeated Argentina 44-6 to reach the final. South Africa again narrowly won by 1 point, 16-15 against England.

Final
The 2019 defending champion South Africa won their 4th title after beating New Zealand, again by 1 point, with the final score at 12-11. South Africa were the champions in 1995 and 2007. They became the first team to win 4 world titles.

More than 2.4 million people attended the 48 games. A total of 325 tries were scored (6.77 per match). Will Jordan of New Zealand scored the most tries with 8.
