2. The 2002 Pittsburgh Pirates had only one other name in their franchise history. What was the name of the team before becoming the Pirates?

Answer: Pittsburgh Alleghenys

They became the Pirates in 1891, after being the Alleghenys from 1882-1890. The Alleghenys best finish was a 2nd place spot in 1882, in the American Association. Ned Hanlon was the Pirates first manager in 1891.
3. Which of the following, was the first player to hit 300 RBI's in a season?

Answer: None listed

The highest total of RBI's in a season in the 20th century, was the great Hack Wilson, who hit 191 in 1930. This was the same season that he belted out 56 home runs for the Chicago Cubs. Gehrig's highest RBI total was 184 in 1931.
4. What player had the nickname of 'Charlie Hustle'?

Answer: Pete Rose

Rose was always the hustling one. From the beginning in 1963, he won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. After 16 seasons with the Reds, he went to the Phillies of Philadelphia in 1979, where he continued to put up consistent numbers. After 24 seasons, and 4256 games played, he left baseball in 1986.
5. Which of the following players, was inducted into the Hall of Fame, in the same year that he retired?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig's last season was his 17th in the Majors, and all his years with the Yankees. He appeared in only 8 games in 1939. He died in 1941. He was inducted into the Hall with no ballots in 1939.
6. How many World Series did the Chicago White Sox win in the 20th century?

Answer: 2

Their first taste of glory, after the franchise began in 1901, was in 1906 under the management of Fielder Jones. Their 2nd was in 1917 under Pants Rowland. They had 2 other opportunities in the World Series but fell short. Their last opportunity in the century was in 1959, where they lost big to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2.
7. How many teams did Nolan Ryan play for througout his career of 27 seasons?

Answer: 4

Nolan first appeared in 1966 with the Mets, appearing in only 2 games. In 1972 he became a California Angel. After 8 seasons wearing a halo, Ryan moved to Houston for 9 seasons. His final stint was 1989-1993 in a Ranger uniform. He retired with 5,714 career strikeouts, a record that will be nearly impossible to surpass.
8. Who was the only player inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988?

Answer: Willie Stargell

'Pops', as he was known to his Pittsburgh fans, was the sole inductee in 1988. He played 21 seasons with the Pirates, and retired in 1982, but not before banging out 475 home runs.
9. Which of the following managers had more career losses?

Answer: Connie Mack

These were all managers in the big leagues, but nobody listed has over 600 career losses, except for Connie Mack. Mack, having managed for 50 seasons, has the highest number of losses with 3948. He also has the most number of wins with 3731. It is unlikely that another manager will ever go for 50 seasons again.
10. Who led the 2002 Boston Red Sox in home runs?

Answer: Manny Ramirez

Of those listed, only Ramirez hit more than 4. Manny popped for 33 to lead the team in 2002. The Red Sox finished in 2nd place in the American League East.
