MLB For Dummies : Easier Trivia Questions

1. This player was active from 1954-1976. He was a 21-time all-star, and a one-time world champion. Who is the greatest "A" player?

From Quiz
MLB ABCs (Best Players Alphabetically)

Answer: Hank Aaron

Henry Louis Aaron was born in 1934 in Mobile, Alabama. He played 23 seasons with the Braves and Brewers. His major statistics are: .305 batting avg., 755 home runs, and 2,297 RBIs. He was a one time MVP, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982. "Hammerin Hank", as he was called, died in 2021 at the age of 86.

2. What is a "banjo hitter"?

From Quiz Baseball Lingo

Answer: Inept hitter-poor contact

A batter that most of the time does not make good contact with the ball is called a banjo hitter because the twanging sound of a mishit bat on the ball sounds like a banjo.

3. Reggie Jackson set a World Series record by hitting five home runs in a single six-game series in 1977. Which player before him hit four home runs in a four-game World Series in 1928?

From Quiz Baseball for Newbies?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others are all Hall of Famers, but none were even born yet by 1928. The 1928 World Series saw the Yankees defeat the Cardinals four games to none. Lou batted .545 with six hits and nine RBIs in the series. He retired with going to seven World Series with the Yankees and winning six. Gehrig hit 10 World Series home runs and batted .361 in series play.

4. The great Henry Aaron set a Major League Baseball record for hitting 755 home runs. Who came along and broke Aaron's record?

From Quiz Crash Test Dummies Baseball

Answer: Barry Bonds

Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 home runs, and retired with 755 home runs of his own. Hank hit most of his home runs with the Braves in 21 of his 23 seasons, and retired with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1976. Bonds 'retired' with the Giants in 2007 with 762 home runs. The 'retired' in quotes was because no team wanted to sign him with enhancing-drug allegations.

5. What New York Yankees catcher was famous for his humble and ironic blurbs (or "isms") and set a record-collecting 71 World Series hits?

From Quiz Around the Horn

Answer: Yogi Berra

Numerous "Yogi-isms" include, "That restaurant is so crowded nobody goes there anymore." And, "Ninety percent of the game is half-mental." Roy Campanella was a hard-hitting catcher who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s and 1950s. Johnny Bench was another catcher who played for the Cincinnati Reds. Bench won World Series titles in 1975 and 1976. The legendary Babe Ruth of course played for the Yankees but was a right fielder after pitching for the Boston Red Sox.

6. In 2008, manager Mike Scioscia led the Angels to their fifth post-season appearance in seven years, and one of the reasons for the Angels' 2008 success was Torii Hunter. Hunter formerly played for eleven seasons on what team?

From Quiz Not-So-Basic Nightmare Baseball [1]

Answer: Minnesota Twins

Torii Hunter was an 11-season Minnesota Twin before joining the Angels for the 2008 season; he was in Minnesota from 1997 through 2007 (and he would rejoin the roster in 2015 for one final season). He won many Gold Gloves for his outfield presence. The Angels were the first team in 2008 to clinch a playoff berth. Mike Scioscia took over the Angels in 2000, then won the franchise's first World Series in 2002. Along with Torii Hunter, their 2008 success was aided by Vladimir Guerrero and Francisco Rodriguez, who pitched his way to more than 60 saves in the season. Scioscia was, then, in his eighth season at the helm of the Angels.

7. What is the "battery"?

From Quiz Baseball Potpourri

Answer: The pitcher and the catcher

The pitcher and catcher are called the "battery" because they are the key to the entire defensive setup. Together, they "run" the game.

8. Who played first base for the Yankees for 15 seasons?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #57

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Although all were Yankee first basemen, none of the others played for the Yankees for more than 10 seasons. After being a reserve for two seasons in 1923 and 1924, Lou replaced legendary Wally Pipp who was hurting one day. The rest is history, as Lou played in every game until 1939.

9. When is a foul ball that isn't caught, called an out?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #41

Answer: When bunting with two strikes

A bunted ball that goes foul, when the batter has 2 strikes is an out.

10. What 2003 team, was the first to lose 100 games in the season?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #39

Answer: Detroit Tigers

11. Who was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #38

Answer: Gaylord Perry

The others were not pitchers. Gaylord won the Cy in 1972 with the Indians, with a record of 24-16. Then he won it again as a San Diego Padre in 1978, going 21-6. In 1970 as a San Francisco Giant, Gaylord was also the runner-up for the Cy Young Award, losing to Bob Gibson of the Cardinals.

12. Frank Chance, Charlie Grimm, Joe McCarthy, Leo Durocher, and Dusty Baker, all managed what team?

Chance, McCarthy, and Grimm, all won National League pennants with the Cubs. Baker managed the club in 2003.

13. What baseball legend and former Giant star, died of cancer on August 23, 2003?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #34

Answer: Bobby Bonds

The baseball world mourned the loss of the father of Giant great Barry Bonds. Bobby played half of his 14 seasons with the Giants. The others listed, never played for the Giants, and all passed away prior to 1986. He was 4th in the league MVP voting in 1971, and 3rd in the voting in 1973. Bonds who always shucked the media, never found a World Series in his career. He retired with 332 home runs, as a Chicago Cub in 1981. He had one of the highest strikeout ratios in baseball, striking out 1757 times. Bobby was 57.

14. What 2003 team, was once named the Philadelphia Athletics?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #33

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics began their franchise as the Philadelphia Athletics, in the newly formed American League in 1901. Under the management of Connie Mack for 50 years, they finally moved to Kansas City for the 1955 season. After 13 seasons, the team moved to Oakland. Reggie Jackson was a rookie in Kansas City's final season, before moving with the club to Oakland in 1968.

15. In honor of #32, what team did Sandy Koufax play with his entire career?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #32

Answer: Dodgers

Born Sanford Braun, Sandy was a rookie in 1955, and appeared in 12 games when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn. He made the move with the team in 1958, and won his first of 3 Cy Young Awards in 1963. All Cy Young Awards, 1963, 1965, and 1966, were due to his winning the Triple Crown each season. He retired in 1966 due to a arthritis.

16. Who was the first pitcher in 2003, to save 40 games in the season?

17. Who was the first player in history, to hit over 700 career home runs?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #27

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #23

21. What two players were inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame on July 27, 2003?

From Quiz Dummies Baseball #20

Answer: Gary Carter and Eddie Murray
