Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This manager danced a ROADIER JIG when he was given the New York Yankees' helm after Joe Torre. Who is this manager?

Answer: Joe Girardi

Girardi played most of his career with the Cubs. He took up managing with the Marlins in 2006. The Yankees hired Joe in 2008 to replace Torre, then took the Yankees to a World Series crown in 2009.
2. This manager would MOCK CANINE because he didn't care what others thought of him. He outlasted every manager in baseball history with his 53 seasons under his belt. Who is this?

Answer: Connie Mack

Born Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, he had the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896, then took on the new Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 for 50 seasons. An iron man in the dugout, Mack took the Athletics to nine American League pennants and took home five World Series crowns. After retiring in 1950, he died in 1956.
3. Like A RUSTY SALON, this manager quietly combed his hair, and before anyone knew it, was the third manager in history to win 2500 games in a managerial career. From the White Sox to the Athletics to the Cardinals, he won the World Series in each league. Who is this?

Answer: Tony LaRussa

Tony played for only six seasons, mostly for the Athletics and retired in 1973. His first job at the helm was with the White Sox from 1979-1986. In midseason 1986, LaRussa moved over to the Oakland Athletics until 1995. He had the Cardinals for more than 10 seasons after that.

His World Series titles came in the 1989 'Earthquake Series' with the Athletics winning over the Giants, then again with the Cardinals in 2006.
4. This Hall of Fame manager was accused of having TOAD MORALS because anywhere there was a TV camera, he was there. He took over the Dodgers managing job after Walter Alston was ill in the 1976 season, then went on to win 1599 games of his own. Who is this manager?

Answer: Tom Lasorda

Alston, also a Hall of Fame manager, had the Dodgers from 1954 to 1976, winning 2040 games. After Walter's 23 seasons, Lasorda stepped in and managed them for another 21 seasons from 1976-1996.
5. This manager sang a DARKER CLEF because he was the first-ever manager to lose a World Series. Which Pittsburgh manager carried this dubious honor?

Answer: Fred Clarke

Fred was at the helm of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903 when they went up against the Boston Americans. Although Pittsburgh won the first-ever World Series game, Boston won the series five games to three.
6. With his GUN HE CAME, but still after 26 managing seasons, he never made a World Series appearance. Who is this manager that helmed the Phillies, Expos, Twins, and Angels while losing over 2000 games?

Answer: Gene Mauch

Mauch had control over the Phillies in the 1960s, the Expos and Twins in the 1970s, and the Angels in the 1980s. His playing experience didn't help him manage as he averaged .239 from the plate, and hit only five home runs in nine seasons between 1944-1957. Gene's career managing record was 1902-2037 from 1960-1987.
7. This manager GENTLY CEASES to amaze everyone. He was the first manager to win five consecutive World Series, and took the same team to 10 World Series in a 12-season span. Who is this Hall of Fame manager?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Casey managed the Dodgers and Braves franchise for nine seasons before picking up the helm of the Yankees in 1949. The result was five consecutive World Series crowns from 1949-1953. At the other end of the spectrum was his four-season stint with the New York Mets from 1962-1965, going 175-404 in those seasons. Stengel died in 1975 with seven World Series titles to his credit.
8. In the offseason, this manager might have been a HEN CRACK FAN, but during the season it was all baseball. He was the Cubs' player-manager when he took them to their first-ever World Series in 1906. Who was this that was part of a historical double-play combination also?

Answer: Frank Chance

Chance was player-manager, but equally as important he was part of the famous double-play combination of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. Frank was the team's first baseman, Joe Tinker the shortstop, and Johnny Evers their second baseman. Failure to get proper credit was the Cubs' third baseman Harry Steinfeldt. Chance took the Cubs to three consecutive World Series from 1906-1908, winning two.
9. This Boston Red Sox manager had a TORN REAR FANCY for the 'Curse of the Bambino' when he took over the Red Sox. The Red Sox had not won a World Series since 1918, but he took them all the way in 2004 to finally erase the curse. He even managed basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan in Minor League Baseball. Who was this manager?

Answer: Terry Francona

Terry played the game for 10 seasons, but not with the Red Sox. He began his managerial duties with the Phillies in 1997, then in 2004 in his first season with Boston, he and the Red Sox won the World Series with a skunk job over the Cardinals. Francona would repeat his endeavors in 2007 with another World Series skunking over the Rockies. Terry managed Michael Jordan in the Minors with the Birmingham Barons.
10. He wasn't an automotive racing CART MECH JOY, but this baseball Hall of Fame manager took the Yankees to eight World Series and the Chicago Cubs to one. Who is this manager who won over 2000 career games?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

McCarthy had the Cubs from 1926-1930, taking them to a World Series loss in 1929 to the Philadelphia Athletics. He was there with the Cubs when Hack Wilson became the second player in history to hit 50 home runs in a season in 1930. He took over the Yankees in 1931, then won all the marbles in 1932 via Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and a host of others.

He left the Yankees in midseason 1946 due to the head office interfering with his managing endeavors. He took the helm of the Red Sox from 1948-1950 before retiring.

His career record as a manager was 2125-1333. Joe died in 1978.
