Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following 25-game winners and also Hall of Fame inductees, never won a Cy Young Award?

Answer: Walter Johnson

Ford of the Yankees won his only Cy Young in 1961. Koufax of the Dodgers and Seaver of the Mets won three Cy Young awards. Seven times in his career, Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators reached the 25-win mark in a season. However, Walter retired in 1927. It would be another 30 seasons before the first Cy Young Award was presented in 1956.
2. In 2008, which batter tied a record for having 200 hits in a season, in eight consecutive seasons?

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki

The others were all retired. All eight of Ichiro's seasons were with the Mariners from 2001-2008. He tied the record of Willie Keeler, who accomplished this feat from 1894-1901. Keeler played with the Baltimore Orioles and Brooklyn Superbas of the National League during his streak. Keeler had 2932 hits over 19 seasons, and Suzuki had 1795 in his first eight.
3. From 1972-1974, the Oakland Athletics went to three consecutive World Series. In 1975, they went to the ALCS once again, but this time was stopped by which team?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Fred Lynn, Luis Tiant, and Carl Yastrzemski put the brakes on the Athletics' streak in a three games to none ALCS win. The Red Sox would later lose to the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, four games to three.
4. This slugger's final World Series appearance was in 1964 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He made it count as he hit three home runs in the series. Which Hall of Famer was this?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The others were all career National Leaguers. Mickey went to 12 World Series with the Yankees, winning seven. He hit 18 World Series home runs throughout his career. His three blasts in 1964 came in game three, six, and seven. The Cardinals won the series anyway, four games to three, and Bob Gibson was the series MVP.
5. Which of the following Hall of Fame pitching greats never went to a World Series?

Answer: Ferguson Jenkins

Drysdale of the Dodgers went to five World Series. Both Hunter and Palmer appeared in six. Jenkins played in 19 seasons from 1965-1983. He played for the Phillies, Cubs, Rangers, and Red Sox. Fergie was the 1971 NL Cy Young winner. Jenkins won 284 games and was inducted into the hall in 1991.
6. Which of the following never hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Johnny Bench

Maris reached the 50-mark only once with his record-setting 61 home runs with the Yankees in 1961. Mays of the Giants and Kiner of the Pirates hit 50+ in a season twice. Bench was a career Cincinnati Red from 1967-1983. Although he won two home run titles in 1970 and 1972, and also won the NL MVP in those seasons, he never reached the 50-mark. John's season-high was 45 in 1970.

The Hall of Fame took him in 1989.
7. Which was the first American League team to win 100 games in a season?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Braves and Giants were National League teams. The Athletics, under the guidance of Connie Mack, went 102-48 in 1910 to win the American League pennant. They would go on to win the World Series against the Cubs. In 1911, they won 101 games also.

The first National League team to win 100 games in a season was the Boston Beaneaters (later Braves) in 1892, when they went 102-48 in the season. The Beaneaters also won 102 games in 1898, and for the second time in National League history, a team broke the 100-mark.
8. Which team did Cy Young winner Denny McLain retire with?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

McLain played with all these teams in his career. His shining moments were with the Tigers, and went 31-6 in 1968. His career plummetted after that, and went 10-22 with the Senators in 1971. He played his final season in 1972 beginning with Oakland, then going 3-5 with the Braves.
9. In 2008, two players reached a major milestone by knocking in their 1700th career RBI. One player was Frank Thomas of the Athletics. Who was the other player?

Answer: Manny Ramirez

The others were all retired. Manny was in his 16th season in baseball with the Dodgers when he reached his milestone. Thomas and Ramirez became only the 21st and 22nd player in history to reach 1700 RBIs. When Hank Aaron retired in 1976, he sat on top of the heap with 2297.
10. Of the six Hall of Fame inductees in 2008, only one was a pitcher. Which immortal was this?

Answer: Rich Gossage

The others listed were already inducted and weren't pitchers. Gossage played with 10 teams over his 22 seasons, and retired in 1994. Although he won only 124 career games, he had 310 saves. "Goose" as he was nicknamed, won the 1978 AL Rolaids Relief Award, and was third in the AL MVP voting in 1980 to George Brett and Reggie Jackson. Gossage was joined in the hall in 2008 along with Barney Dreyfuss, Bowie Kuhn, Walter O'Malley, Billy Southworth, and Dick Williams.
