Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these pitching greats did not throw 2000 strikeouts in their career?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Whitey fell just short of the 2000-mark by throwing 1956, but still well below the others listed. Ryan retired with 5714, Carlton 4136, Feller with 2581. The other three led their league in strikeouts at least five times in their career, while the Yankee Ford never led even once.
2. Three of these pitching greats threw at least two no-hitters in their career. Who didn't throw any?

Answer: Don Sutton

Ryan threw an amazing seven no-hitters in his career. Koufax of the Dodgers threw four, and Nomo threw one in each league. Sutton pitched for 23 seasons, mostly for the Dodgers. Don won 20 games in a season only once, yet retired with 324 wins.
3. Which of these sluggers never led their league in home runs?

Answer: Joe Morgan

The others all won or shared the season home run crown four times. The Hall of Famer Morgan, mostly with the Astros and Reds, averaged only 12 home runs per season in his career. His season high was 27 in 1976, which ranked him fifth in the NL for the season.
4. Three of these Hall of Fame greats played their entire career in the American League. Which one did not?

Answer: Eddie Murray

Yastrzemski played his entire 23-season career with the Red Sox, and retired in 1983. Fisk shared 24 seasons between the Red Sox and White Sox, and retired in 1993. Brett was a 21-season career Royal. Murray began his 21 seasons in 1977 as an Oriole. He spent 15 seasons in the AL, and six seasons in the NL with the Mets and Dodgers. Eddie retired in 1997.
5. Which of these greats never hit .400 in a season?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Jackson reached the .300-plateau only once in his career when he batted .300 in 1980 with the Yankees. Hornsby did it in three full seasons with the Cardinals in 1922, 1924, and 1925. Cobb blessed the Tigers in 1911 (.420), 1912 (.409), and 1922 (.401). Williams did it only once in a full season.
6. Three of these Hall Fame greats went to at least five World Series in their career. Which player never went to even one?

Answer: Ernie Banks

Although being an all-star 11 times, winning two National League MVPs, a Gold Glove, and leading the league in home runs and RBIs twice, Ernie's Cubs never saw a World Series. From his 1953-1971 seasons, the best the Cubs could do were two second place finishes under Leo Durocher in 1969 and 1970.
7. The coveted Cy Young award, the ultimate recognition that a pitcher could receive, began in 1956. Three of these pitching greats won the award three times. Which of the following never won it?

Answer: Allie Reynolds

Reynolds, who spent five seasons with the Indians and eight with the Yankees, retired in 1954 before the award was presented.
8. Three of these pitchers were not thieves, and retired without stealing a base in their career. However, one of them stole 13. Who was this "Big Train"?

Answer: Walter Johnson

They all played for more than 10 seasons, and all came up dry except for Johnson. Walter played his entire career with the Washington Senators.
9. The Manager of the Year award began in 1983. Which of the following managing greats didn't even win one, while the others received at least two Manager of the Year awards?

Answer: Walter Alston

The Manager of the Year award was first presented in 1983 with Tom Lasorda of the NL and Tony LaRussa of the AL winning it first. Alston managed the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers from 1954-1976. He took the Dodgers to seven World Series appearances. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983, then died a year later.
10. Three of these Hall of Fame greats appeared in at least 15 all-star games for the National League. Who did not?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr

Aaron made 19 appearances for the NL and one for the AL. Musial went to 20 as a St. Louis Cardinal, and Mays went to 20 also. Ripken was a career Baltimore Oriole. Although appearing in 19 all-star games, they were all for the American League as he was a Baltimore Oriole.
