Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1975, baseball scored its 1,000,000th run in history. Which team provided this milestone?

Answer: Houston Astros

None of the other teams existed in 1975. The milestone happened when Houston's Bob Watson crossed the plate on May 4 in a game against the Giants.
2. In 1966, who became the first batter in history to strike out 1500 times in a career?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The others all retired in the 1950s. Mantle, the career Yankee, retired with 1710 strikeouts, a high number in the where the game was tailored for the hitters. Since Mickey's retirement, his 1500-mark had been surpassed by more than 40 others, including Reggie Jackson and his 2597 strikeouts.
3. Which team lost the 2007 World Series?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

The Red Sox quieted the Rockies four games to none. The Rockies franchise began in 1993, and 2007 was their first trip to the promised land. The series' MVP was Boston's Mike Lowell.
4. Which pitcher threw a perfect game against the Cubs in 1965?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The others did not begin their MLB career until the mid-1970s. On September 9, the Dodgers and Koufax threw a perfecto against the Cubs, 1-0. Unfortunately, lost in all the glory was Cubs pitcher Bob Hendley, who threw a one-hitter against the Dodgers at the same time.
5. Which of the following won the most season home run crowns?

Answer: Mike Schmidt

The others all won four, but Schmidt doubled their count with eight. Not only being a great fielder by winning 10 Gold Gloves at third base, the Phillies' three-time MVP hit a career 548 home runs. He led the league in 1974-76, 1980-81, 1983-84, then 1986. Amazingly, with his career 548 home runs, he never reached the 50-milestone in a season.

He topped out at 48 in 1980. The Hall of Fame inducted Mike in 1995.
6. In 1984, which slugger smacked his 4000th hit?

Answer: Pete Rose

The others never reached 3500, and in a mark that will probably never be touched again, only Rose and the great Ty Cobb topped the 4000-hit mark. Pete's double off the Phillies' Jerry Koosman was exactly 21 years to the date of his first Major League hit, April 13, 1963. Rose ended up with 4253 hits in his career.
7. Who was the first speedster in history to steal 1000 career bases?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

The others, and even the great Ty Cobb never reached the 900-plateau. Henderson stole 1406 bases in his career. Unless baseball alters their rules, Rickey will most probably be the only player to reach 1000.
8. Some may know that Baltimore Oriole Cal Ripken broke the record of Lou Gehrig for most consecutive games played. In 1985, Cal also broke the record for most consecutive innings played with 5342. Whose record did he break?

Answer: George Pinkney

George Pinkney played 5,152 consecutive innings over six seasons from 1885 to 1890, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers (at the time they were the Brooklyn Grays/Bridegrooms/Grooms). The record stood for 95 years.
9. Which of the following did not play their entire career with one team?

Answer: Willie Mays

Both Robinson and Palmer were career Baltimore Orioles, and Banks, known as "Mr. Cub", played his entire career with the Chicago Cubs. Mays played for 20 full seasons with the Giants before they traded him to the Mets in 1972. Mays hit 660 career home runs and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979.
10. In 1998, the New York Yankees set an American League record for most games won in a season. How many games did they win?

Answer: 114

The Yankees went an amazing 114-48 in the season. They went on to skunk the San Diego Padres in the World Series. The Seattle Mariners broke the Yankees' record by winning 116 in 2001.
