Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paddock Hill Bend
Paddock Hill Bend is named because it's near the pits and paddock area. This is the first bend you arrive at from the start. It's notorious for accidents due to the way the corner is laid out. The main reason why this right-hander is a difficult corner is because of the changes in elevation on the entry and exit, which can make the car unstable, and the fact that it then proceeds to go downhill, which only adds more difficulty.
2. Druids
The full name is really Druids Hill Bend, but everybody just calls it Druids. How Druids got its name is hard to say. However, what I found out is that the bend was added between 1953 and 1954 as an addition to the circuit, extending it to a length of 1.24 miles.
3. Graham Hill Bend
Graham Hill Bend is named after former two-time Formula One champion Graham Hill, who was a world champion in 1962 and 1968. Hill also won the Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 hours, making him a triple crown winner. Graham Hill was the father of former F1 champion Damon Hill.
Grahame Hill died in a plane crash in November 1975, aged 46. The crash happened near Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet in thick fog.
4. Surtees
Turn four on the GP circuit was named after the former Formula 1 world champion and the motorcycle world champion. John Surtees won the World F1 Championship in 1964 and the Motorcycle World Championship seven times, across both the 350cc and 500cc motorcycle categories, between 1956 and 1960.
5. Hawthorn Bend
There is some confusion about the name of another corner on the Brands Hatch circuit. It appears to have been named after Mike Hawthorn, Britain's first Formula One World Champion. However, there have been other suggestions that it may have been the name of a nearby farm.
6. Westfield Bend
Westfield Bend is so named because of the proximity of the bend to Westfield's Wood, where part of the track had been constructed. Westfield Bend is a right-hander that is taken quite fast, drivers tend to cut the corner as much as possible here as they try not to scrub off speed for the next stage of the circuit.
7. Sheene Curve
Sheene Curve is named after motorcycle world champion Barry Sheene. Barry was the 500cc world champion in 1976 and 1977 while riding for the Suzuki factory racing team. Sheene Curve is a tricky right-hand bend made more difficult as it's a blind corner while at the same time being uphill.
8. Stirling's
Stirling's is the eighth corner at Brands. You'd think this corner was named after the F1 driver Stirling Moss; if you did, then you would be wrong, the same as me! After doing some research on the name, it appears to have been given its name because the neighbouring farm was Stirling's farm.
9. Clark Curve
Clark Curve was named after former double world F1 champion Jim Clark. Jim won the titles in 1963 and 1965. Jim also won the Indianapolis 500 in 1965. Between 1960 and 1968, he drove for Team Lotus. In his F1 career, Jim won 25 races and had 32 podiums.
Jim Clark was killed in April 1968 in Hockenheim, West Germany, while competing in a Formula 2 race. Jim was only 32 years old.
10. Brabham Straight
Brabham Straight was named after former world champion Jack Brabham. Brabham was an Australian who won the F1 championship in 1959, 1960, and 1966. Jack was also the owner of the Brabham racing team, for which he won one world championship in 1966.
